Potential new nicknames for North Dakota (not) Sioux - Love and Honor - 05-05-2015 01:26 AM

The submission window is closed and NoDak has revealed the suggested nicknames, all 1172 of them. They've revealed two lists, the first of which is the list of names under consideration. For your amusement, all submissions (including duplicates) are presented in these handy dandy lists!

Hilarious that "Abdominal Snowmen" makes the cut, but "Abominable Snowmen" doesn't. "Fliers" does but "Flyers" doesn't. "Dragons of Ice" and "Icy Flying Reptiles" do but not "Ice Dragons."

Instead of snowmen, how about blueskins? Or would that offend someone with some sort of genetic disorder or someone who eats too many blueberries?

Abdominal Snowmen: Because **** it why not, it's basically the north pole there.

It is a huge, HUGE missed opportunity if the nickname is not Abdominal Snowmen

In these politically correct times, it would probably have to be changed to the Adorable Snow People.

How about the "North Dakota Sue"

sponsored by the law firm of Dewey, Cheatum and Howe?

Oilers.

It would be a relevant nickname that reflects the state in 2015.

The team of Sue. Of course now she will have to forgo attending East Indiana State where her brother is and migrate to NDST, a long way from Orson, Indiana
A freakin hilarious choice that would be a huge dig at the NCAA

7th Calvary: Indians won again.

Lots of great ones on those pages. Looks like my productivity will be shot for the day.

A lot of people were advocating "Engines" for us for the same reason.

That's a good idea.

The committee declared the word " Roughriders" is off limits, but it a state nickname for crying out loud. But North Dakota is also the Sioux state.

Cavalry is now my favorite. 7th Cavalry won't make it.

A number of choice were submitted by NDSU fans. That is obvious!

The most voiced name which was rejected was Fighting Sioux, which had pages and pages of submissions.

The Soo Railroad was big in the state, but now its part of the Canadian National lines.

My sympathy. Things got tense among the AState fan base when we plowed this ground. It ended up working out wonderfully but it got tense.

Its tearing up the state, largely because the state board of education lied about things. NDSU's president needed to delete his past 30,000 emails, otherwise he would have been found complicit in a conspiracy, IMHO. UNDs President and his staff recently barely avoided the students governments calls for their resignations because of the past actions and wanting to raise tuition outrageously when the legislature has already limited any increase to 2.5%.

A majority of Sioux Indians in the state are not against the name, at least those who got to vote directly on the issue. Other Indians tribes in the state (Mandan, Arikara, Hidatsa, and Ojibwe), where animosity still lingers against the Sioux culture, are stridently opposed. Sioux nickname t-shirts are common on Sioux reservations, but not other ones. The biggest nickname opposer's on campus were academia and Ojibwe.

Maybe the Objibwe would like to have their name as the mascot?

Some half truth there. The schools with NA names retain permission by agreements with specific NA groups who benefit greatly from increased public awareness, scholarships, and financial compensation for usage of the name/imagery. Nothing can be changed without really screwing these groups over.

At the same time, the names and especially the imagery can be legitimately offensive to other NA groups, especially when imagery borrows more from other groups than the one contracted by the school. These groups also get to see their neighbors receive a payout for the offensive stuff. I can entirely see where the anger comes from.

There is also a lot of illegitimate offense taken by PC idiots.

I don't know how administrators navigate these situations, but I'm glad I don't have to.
