Home Run leaders - It's not A-Rod - NewTimes - 05-03-2015 07:56 AM

With A-Rod making the news with his 660 home run tying Mays, let's put his total in perspective.

My vote for the true, top 10, most valid home run leaders
1- Hank Aaron (755)
2- Babe Ruth (714)
3- Willie Mays (660)
4- Ken Griffey, Jr (630)
5- Jim Thome (612)
6- Frank Robinson (586)
7- Harmon Killebrew (573)
8- Reggie Jackson (563)
9- Mike Schmidt (548)
10- Mickey Mantle (536)

The others who deserve an asterisk* and don't deserve to be in the company of those above:
- Barry Bonds (762) 'roid cheater
- A-Rod (660) 'roid cheater
- Sosa (609) 'roid cheater
- Mark McGuire (583) 'roid cheater
- Rafael Palmerio (579) 'roid cheater
- Manny Ramirez (555) 'roid cheater

If Ken Griffey Jr. had gone the roid path of the other players of his era he would more than likely be the all-time leader ahead of even Bonds. Not only would his power increase allowed him to hit more HR's but more importantly it would have kept him healthy. In his 9 seasons with Cincinnati he was injured the equivalent of nearly 3 seasons which is another 100 HR's.

Bonds hit well over 300 HR's past the age of 35. Griffey Jr hit well less than half of that. That's where steroids really help more than anything. They keep you healthy and increase your high output lifespan.

Which is why the 'roid era of home runs aren't a true indication of the record. In all of American sports, the home run is the most hallowed and valid barometer of an athletic achievement.

Girffey Jr. deserves to be #4. To be behind Aaron, Ruth and Mays is a tremendous achievement. If he had not be injured those years he would have passed Mays, likely Ruth and even Aaron, the true home run king.
