Rice Owls at Mt. SAC Relays - WRCisforgotten79 - 04-16-2015 03:37 PM

Several Owls (both men and women) will be competing at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays in California. It is primarily for middle distance and distance runners, but Scott Filip and freshman Charlie Card-Childers are both entered in separate Decathlon competitions. Scott is in the section for the top decathletes, while Charlie is in another group.

In the Mt. SAC Decathlon (the "A" group), Scott led a very good field after the first day of competition. The athletes have completed Event 6 (110 meter hurdles) and are now in the discus. Here are the updated standings:

1. Beach, Nike 5117
2. Morgan, Buffalo 5041
3. Filip, Rice 5022
4. Turner, Toronto 4955
5. Hopkins, Santa Barbara TC 4866
6. Wasik, UCLA 4843
7. Balczak, Asuza Pacific 4831
8. Thomas, Unattached 4787
9. Rohner, Duke 4767
10. Cooke, Santa Barbara TC 4656

It seems as if Charlie is doing well in the Invitational Decathlon, but because the results page does not list overall point totals, and because there is no result listed for yesterday's decathlon long jump, I cannot tell you exactly where he stands. His group is now in Event 8 (pole vault).

RESULTS (Multis).

RE: Rice Owls at Mt. SAC Relays - WRCisforgotten79 - 04-16-2015 04:36 PM

On the track - there are 4 sections of the women's 10,000 meters, and Katie Jensen will be in the "Open A" section (the third fastest according to seeding). That event will start tonight at 7:45 PDT.

Cali Roper will be in the "Invitational B" section (the second fastest according to seeding). That event will start tonight at 8:27 PDT.

The action will be shown live on Flotrack.

RESULTS (Running).

RE: Rice Owls at Mt. SAC Relays - WRCisforgotten79 - 04-16-2015 05:02 PM

The guys will have a number of competitors on the track at the Bryan Clay Invite (Asuza Pacific). That meet will take place on Friday.

800 meters (1:05 p.m. PDT): Harry Sagel, David Diaz and Zach Watterson. Right now, Sagel is the C-USA leader in the 800 meters (1:53.09), while Diaz is 3rd (1:54.00).

3,000 meter steeplechase (5:25 p.m. PDT): Griffin Lee and Marco Ruiz. Lee is 4th in C-USA (9:22.11) and Ruiz is 7th (9:40.55).

1500 meters (7:00 p.m. PDT): Harry Sagel, David Diaz and Will Roberts. Roberts is 6th in C-USA (3:54.03).

5,000 meters (10:25p.m. PDT): Aneesh Sampath and Adam Davidson. Sampath is 10th in C-USA (14:59.51), while Davidson is 13th (15:13.76).

I was just looking at possible C-USA competition for Scott Filip, and found out that Atsu Nyamadi of Middle Tennessee State is among the national leaders with 7532 points. I was glancing at their men's roster, and it breaks down as follows:

Africa 10 (Kenya 5, Uganda 3, Ghana 2)
Antigua 1
Tennessee 8

So they have a bigger percentage of locals than Rice's tennis teams. Interesting stat. Shows how international college sports have become!

Big difference: we know how old the tennis players are. There is zero accountability for African runners. It's a gigantic advantage for 25-28 year olds versus 18-22 year olds. The outstanding Oregon distance runner, Edward Cheserek? Not a chance he's a day younger than 26.

RE: Rice Owls at Mt. SAC Relays - WRCisforgotten79 - 04-16-2015 10:45 PM

Katie Jensen ran a nice race, finishing in 35:04.39, for 4th in her section. That time might be good enough to make NCAA 1st round.

And, Cali Roper has been moved to the fast heat at 9:04 p.m., PDT.

RE: Rice Owls at Mt. SAC Relays - WRCisforgotten79 - 04-16-2015 11:19 PM

The 7608 total by Scott Filip places him #3 in the NCAA, and 1st in C-USA.

RE: Rice Owls at Mt. SAC Relays - WRCisforgotten79 - 04-16-2015 11:56 PM

Cali Roper with 34:01.75 (negative split) for the top collegian in the race, just ahead of two UCLA runners. That time would put her among the top 30 in the NCAA this year.

RE: Rice Owls at Mt. SAC Relays - WRCisforgotten79 - 04-17-2015 04:14 PM

Charlie Card-Childers hurt his ankle in his Decathlon javelin (Event 9), so he was not able to finish Event 10 (1500 meters). But, of note, his high jump of 2.13 meters (6' 11¾") was awesome! Not only is he just shy of hitting 7 feet, but that jump ranks him #1 in C-USA this season!
