Good summary of why college basketball went from and annoying offseason distraction to complete disgust for me

Geno on a tear...eh:
"College men's basketball is so far behind the times it's unbelievable. I mean women's basketball is behind the times. Men's basketball is even further behind the times. Every other major sport in the world has taken steps to help people be better on the offensive end of the floor."

What about Soccer and Hockey? Scoring hasn't increased in those sports.

Maybe if they made the men's ball the size of the women's ball, scoring would increase.

One of my reasons for being upset about college BB is the influence that Vegas has on it.

Different sports though. Basketball is more fun and more watchable in general when there's scoring. Less players, smaller court, etc

I have been yelling about not having a scorer for a couple years.
Sick of D being glorified.

I can fix soccer for Americans with one single change. Make the goal bigger; leave everything else exactly the same. 1-0 / 2-1 games become 3-2 / 6-5 games and Americans love the sport.

I was mesmerized watching the Rogues, but I would have watched anything that wasted. Red card Red Card Red Card.

Geno is in no position to talk. Women's basketball is a disgrace and the amount of talent he stacks on his team would make Calipari blush.

I don't think there's any doubt that the talent level in college BB has sunk.

Think about this for a second:

When the Tigers had Keith Lee, the NBA had 23 teams and an 11-man roster.

23*11 = 253 'jobs'.

Now, the NBA has 30 teams and 15-man rosters.

30*15 = 450 'jobs'.

AND, throw in the fact that Europe and China have opened up several very, very viable opportunities (Earl Barron once told me a story about not getting paid when he played overseas - too funny). Throw in the fact that the NBA's collective bargaining agreement made it very, very attractive to leave college BB in order to 'get that first contract done' so as to get the much, much bigger second contract and it's easy to see why the talent level is so depleted.

Talent depletion is most evident where there is a pre-existing scarcity. When MLB expanded, the first place the decrease in talent that was obvious was in the pitching area, since there already was a scarcity of top-level starters. Same with college BB. There are very few highly skilled offensive players and it's much easier to be a good defender than it is to be a highly skilled shooter who can create his own shot, sink the three (CONSISTENTLY with a good shooting %).

Also, with the tourney already at 68 teams, pre-season tourneys and conference tourneys, there really is not much of a compelling reason to watch regular-season college BB. And the attendance #'s certainly bear that out.

Get rid of offsides and you might be onto something.

And, yet, the men's Final Four and Championship games will have 15X the viewership that the women's broadcast will. Yeah, the men's game is sooooo behind the times, Geno.

The fact that they are trying to get the college game to mirror the NBA is sad too. NBA basketball is absolutely unwatchable until the playoffs and coaching doesn't matter in the least because of the rushed pace.

Tell that to the Spurs...

But the ugliness of college basketball is the reason for parity...

Make it a free flowing and fast game and talent starts to win out and you lose the cinderella stories
