Who's in the Sun Belt. - Saint3333 - 03-23-2015 08:27 AM

Someone asked me who is in App's conference this weekend. This has been a popular question I've received since we left the SoCon.

I usually rattle off 3-4 teams, GS, ULL, Ark St. and a team near the location I'm in when asked (ie Texas St. when in Texas).

However for the first time I used GA St. as one of the 3-4 programs.

When asked, what teams are the first you list?

I get a lot of "it's about time you guys moved to Division I!" but most don't ask who all is in the conference.

If asked I try to bring up names typical college sports fans in Georgia would most likely be familiar with - App, Troy, the ULX's (if I used "Louisiana" it would confuse the heck out of people), StAte, and of course Georgia State.

RE: Who's in the Sun Belt. - Usajags - 03-23-2015 08:49 AM

I think it is natural to start with teams that are in the local area, of course I say Troy. As of right I usually don't start with App and GaSo due to most people still think that you are FCS. I also have to explain to people that the Sun Belt is the same level of Athletics as the SEC, ACC and other big names that they know. Most casual sport fans have no clue about conferences and who is and isn't an FBS or FCS level team.

Ditto. I start off with the schools in Louisiana, Troy, & stAte.

After that, it depends on who we are playing/recently played, or if I know the other person is vested in a member school (or has a tie to a school that has ties to a member school... Example: I was talking to a Michigan fan, so I mentioned App State.)

RE: Who's in the Sun Belt. - NCeagle - 03-23-2015 09:39 AM

obviously, being in Charlotte, I tell people app state. Then usually say lousisiana Lafayette.

RE: Who's in the Sun Belt. - USAJag2011 - 03-23-2015 09:48 AM

I usually start with Troy and the Louisiana schools.

Most casual football fans around Mobile know who ULM is, especially the Bama fans (most of them still remember that dark day when Saban first took over, it's almost like 9/11).

"Louisiana Lafayette, Troy, Arkansas State -- plus our rival Georgia Southern followed us."

I say Arkansas State and Troy usually as it seems folks in this area know them.

Let's face it, we all know that Georgia Southern led the way. We always have.

RE: Who's in the Sun Belt. - APPrising - 03-23-2015 10:07 AM

I usually start off with Idaho

RE: Who's in the Sun Belt. - epiccajun - 03-23-2015 10:11 AM

stAte, Georgia Southern, Texas State, Troy, Ga State.

RE: Who's in the Sun Belt. - TheEagleWay - 03-23-2015 10:11 AM

I typically say Troy and App.

When I mention Georgia State, some look puzzled and don't realize they have a football team. <----- That's not trolling, I've had that happen numerous times.

The Macon area is nothing but Red and Black so their arrogance shines often in discussing anything that is not SEC.

Shirley, you can't be serious. Apps been moving towards FBS since 2007. I didn't hear a word about GaSo leaving until Georgia St got an invite.

I always mention the Lousiana's, Troy, Ark State and App.

I generally list off TXST, the Louisiana's, Arkansas State and App State. Will list everyone when asked who all is in the SBC. When I say Idaho people think I am joking but explain that they are in the SBC, sorry Idaho fans. Then I get asked about how good football is, I will talk about ULL, Arkansas state mainly. Then I get asked the state of basketball and then inform who I am talking to NMSU doesn't play basketball in the SBC, explanation ensues. After rattling off the schools in the WAC I am then asked when NMSU is leaving the WAC, which I respond by saying "Not soon enough." Last year I got a text from a friend asking me how NMSU could lose to ULL in the SBC Tournament Championship game for MBB.

One thing I have learned is the SBC has some good name recognition.

That's understandable, but becoming less confusing as time passes(compared to say 2 years ago) from my experience. I almost always refer to us first as the Ragin Cajuns, and about 90% of the time they know that name, then I follow it up with Louisiana Ragin Cajuns.

now when asked about other conference teams, I tend to start with the local teams to where I am located then the local teams that are located to the fan base of the person asking( I usually know who there team is by the time they ask me). last i finish with the most common names that have not been said. knowing some may not be familiar with all the teams, I try to help inform the uniformed.

I have to wonder if GA St. announcing or App making its intentions know impacted GS's decision to quickly look towards FBS. I believe GA St. started the process to look into it, but the App statement pushed them over the top, as in I'm not staying around this conference/division without them.

I know the move was a much easier decision and easier for alumni to accept when we knew staying in the SoCon without GS (football) and DC (basketball) wasn't viable.

RE: Who's in the Sun Belt. - chiefsfan - 03-23-2015 11:41 AM

I list off Ole Miss, LSU, and Mississippi State just to see if anyone believes me. Usually I get this amusing double take before someone catches on. Only works when I am out of state.

In Arkansas it's a bit different. Since we are the 2nd team in Arkansas, and the pigs do love to play SBC Teams yearly, there's enough of a knowledge of the SBC to know that ULL, Troy, and ULM are in the league at least. What I usually get asked is who we brought in to replace the teams that left, and I lead with Texas State, App State, and Georgia Southern, while ultimately forgetting that we added NMSU and Idaho.
