Model arenas for JMU's new Convo - Hart Foundation - 03-14-2015 12:36 PM

Some time this century we will get to see plans for a new Convo. There are many good ideas already implemented at other arenas in regards to seating arrangement.
Here are some. Feel free to add you own
Galen Center USC lower level needs to be steeper, but lots of things to borrow
[Image: 0225galenovervew.jpg]

Gallagher Iba Arena Ok. State steep and fans are on top of the court
[Image: basketball-venues_ss_007]

Cameron Indoor stadium Duke fans on the court and press row is at the top
[Image: basketball-venues_ss_011]

Memorial gym Vanderbilt build it like a rectangle instead of a square. balcony=cool
[Image: memorialgymrecoated83111.jpg]

O-dome Florida steep and fans hovering with railing in front to keep them off court
[Image: odome.jpg]

Old Mcarthur court Oregon - my personal fave. Modernize the engineering, but keep the balconies. Feels like a performing arts center.

Don't know how to put it on here, but ODU has about the nicest one I have seen for a mid major.

The key will be to make it work for not just basketball, but for speakers, concerts, and other events. The focus will be on making it a multipurpose arena. Love the idea of having a small bottom area right on top of the court that we could pack with students.

Do you think ODuh underbuilt in regard to capacity? I always wondered how much more it would have taken to add another level to the Ted...

Why would some of those new fantastic arena's put such flat seating down on the lowest tier and locate them a million miles from the court? i.e. Vanderbilt.

ODU ' S is not bad, but it isn't the best either.
If it was steeper and had the last 7 to 10 rows hanging over the lower seats, then it would be great.

I'm looking for performance seating.
How about this, but built in a rectangle

Here is a better view. The place holds 9100. That sounds like a good number to me and with the suites in that upper level, I don't know there is much I would change.

Wow. I did not realize it held that many for basketball. that's a good number. it doesn't look that big to me, but there is not a bad seat in the house. And I hate to say it, but they have a good home court advantage- don't believe they lost there this year.

We're not going to see anything anytime soon. Private funding goal is $12 mil as of June 2016. Overall tag is at $99mil.

I went to the Towson game in February and enjoyed their arena. Maybe nicer and smaller is what we need?

Suites will make a place look deceptively small in seating capacity due to being hidden from view.

Vanderbilt ' s arena was renovated several times so it isn't ideal and it Is way too big. However, the concept of balconies is unique and worth using.
Instead of having 30 rows in one continuous level, have 10 rows in 3 different levels. It gets paying fans so much closer to the action.

RE: Model arenas for JMU's new Convo - DoubleDDuke - 03-14-2015 02:53 PM

I'm not impressed by Towson's arena but smaller is better IMO. We're not getting 9k fans out to games no matter what. I'd rather an intimate place that's loud and full. Then again, if they want it to be multi-purpose for monster truck shows and stuff, there's not much choice because you have to open up the corners and stuff to get things of that size in and out.

There is a lot to like about this as well.

I like Towson ' s idea, but they didn't fully execute. Suites and club seats should fill the area where they have a bunch of air between level one and two.
Concourses should be behind and underneath seating areas at all times.

Is there any other P5 school which utilize goals hanging from the ceiling other than Duke?

That is very true.
