Baseball - Charlotte Game 1 - AnotherOldOwl - 03-06-2015 04:21 PM

J.C. Reeves with a 2-RBI double. Rice 2-0.
Kirby Taylor singles, J.C. thrown out at the plate.
2-0 good guys going to bottom of the 1st.

Good start, but by the sounds of things (2 fly balls, double), McCanna is once again leaving the ball up in the zone (as he did against both Arizona and Stanford). He needs to get it down.

Should of had another run in the first, but let's keep hitting.

Lewis lined out to 2B.
Kopycinski first pitch grounded out.
Warren walked on 3-2 count. Two outs.
Chandler grounded out.

I like the way our right-handed hitters are going the other way against the loft-tossing left-handed. Good approach. Unfortunately, Chandler is now in a bit of a funk.

2-0 good guys heading to the bottom of the second inning.

RE: Baseball - Charlotte Game 1 - bobreinhold1 - 03-06-2015 04:44 PM

3 quick outs in bottom of 2.

RE: Baseball - Charlotte Game 1 - ColOwl - 03-06-2015 04:48 PM

Charlotte must have the most pitiful Live Stats in D1A baseball.

RE: Baseball - Charlotte Game 1 - bobreinhold1 - 03-06-2015 04:49 PM

3 up, 3 down in top of 3.

RE: Baseball - Charlotte Game 1 - waltgreenberg - 03-06-2015 04:50 PM

Kevin with a 1-2-3 inning, but again all fly outs, meaning he's keeping the ball up. This is a bit of a concern; especially when facing good hitting teams.

Stainback first pitch fly out.
Byrd grounded out to pitcher.
Reeves first pitch infield single in the hole at SS. Runner on 1B, two outs.
Taylor struck out on 3 pitches. Ugh.

This guy is struggling with his control, and suddenly we're showing no patience???

2-0 good guys heading to the bottom of the third inning.

RE: Baseball - Charlotte Game 1 - waltgreenberg - 03-06-2015 04:55 PM

Maybe McCanna had the right idea with all the flies and line drive outs. First grounder of the game by Charlotte-- you guessed it, an error on Stainback. Ugh. Make it stop!!! 03-banghead

RE: Baseball - Charlotte Game 1 - bobreinhold1 - 03-06-2015 04:57 PM

Byrd gets the next grounder for the 3rd out. 2-0 going to the 4th.

RE: Baseball - Charlotte Game 1 - waltgreenberg - 03-06-2015 05:05 PM

Kevin with another easy inning (line out, fly out, ground out), though a runner reached on E-4. He doesn't appear to be missing any bats, which is a bit surprising against Charlotte and disappointing.

Teykl ground out to 2B on 3-2 count. Nice AB though.
Lewis ground out to SS.
Kopycinski flied out on 3-2 pitch.

Our offense has suddenly grounded to a halt.

2-0 good guys heading to the bottom of the fourth inning.

RE: Baseball - Charlotte Game 1 - bobreinhold1 - 03-06-2015 05:11 PM

2 out double and wild pitch, but McCanna gets tapper to mound to end inning.

RE: Baseball - Charlotte Game 1 - waltgreenberg - 03-06-2015 05:19 PM

Kevin skirting with disaster in a repeat of the first inning-- two-out double (liner in the gap), followed by wild pitch (2nd of game) and 4-pitch walk...but then induced an easy ground out. Offense needs to reassert itself...now!

Warren ground out to 1B. This guy must be a sinker ball pitcher as we have hit just 3 balls in the air, including our 4 hits. 8 ground outs.
Chandler struck out swinging. Ryan really, really struggling against southpaw pitching.
Stainback grounded out to 3B.
Offense in hypernation. 49er pitcher has retired 11 of last 12 batters, with not a single hard hit ball. They are squaring up much better against McCanna than we are against Geoghagen.

2-0 good guys heading to the bottom of the fifth inning.

RE: Baseball - Charlotte Game 1 - Leoguy - 03-06-2015 05:34 PM

Just noticed that the Charlotte Live Stats lists a Rice player named J. Clay (DH).

RE: Baseball - Charlotte Game 1 - Leoguy - 03-06-2015 05:42 PM

T6: first 2 Owls reach, then nothing...

RE: Baseball - Charlotte Game 1 - waltgreenberg - 03-06-2015 05:45 PM

Kevin's got his groove back-- after a leadoff infield single to 3B (should it have been an error?), he struck out the next 3 batters; his first strikeouts since the first inning.

Byrd on base after E-5. Hit and run with JC up?
Reeves another infield single; actually a seeing eye grounder through the hold. Runners on 1B and 2B, no outs. Gotta bunt here. Let's execute!
Taylor popped up bunt for out. UGH. Geez, Ineptitude in the bunting game once again. Same old, same old.
Teykl struck out swinging.
New pitcher for Charlotte, RHP Vogler, who has throw just 2.1 IP this year, with 1 hit, 2 BBs, 1 K...
Gray pinch hit for Lewis...grounded out to C on 3-2 pitch.
And we wasted yet another promising inning with our inability to bunt. We're letting Charlotte hand around. Very dangerous.

2 - 0 good guys heading to the bottom of the sixth inning.

RE: Baseball - Charlotte Game 1 - bobreinhold1 - 03-06-2015 05:45 PM

Hate that strategy. Gave away another out with a failed bunt. Taylor was our best chance to get a hit. Our lefties haven't done anything with their pitcher.

Sorry, Bob, but guys on 1B and 2B, no outs in a still close game, and you have to bunt there. Time to start practicing, and teaching proper technique.

RE: Baseball - Charlotte Game 1 - bobreinhold1 - 03-06-2015 05:48 PM

So what if he moves them over when nobody else can get them in.

RE: Baseball - Charlotte Game 1 - waltgreenberg - 03-06-2015 05:48 PM

Yet another infield single. If anyone is watching on video, was this a real hit or an error?

And another. Two infield singles to SS this inning. What's going on?

A ground ball scores Byrd from 3B with one out...and the pitcher and fielders take different approach.

RE: Baseball - Charlotte Game 1 - Orange County Owl - 03-06-2015 05:52 PM

2-1 after 6th.

The guy on the Charlotte PBP makes JP sound like a combination of Jack Buck and Vin Scully.
