Former Rocket Hoops commit Kamau Stokes to Kansas State - Sleepy - 03-05-2015 03:21 PM

"Stokes, rated a three-star prospect by Rivals.com, picked the Wildcats over offers from Ole Miss, Bradley, Cal State Fullerton, Fairfield, Florida Gulf Coast, Loyola Chicago and Louisiana Tech.

A Baltimore Sun All-Metro first-team selection last spring, Stokes averaged 15 points, seven assists and four rebounds in leading the Knights to a 27-0 season and the Class 3A state championship. City’s other All-Metro first-teamers – Timmy Bond and Omari George – ended up at Eastern Michigan and Bowie State, respectively. Stokes, meanwhile, signed with Toledo last April.

City guard Kamau Stokes verbally commits to Toledo
His status with the Rockets changed, however, when assistant coach Jordan Mincy left for Louisiana Tech.

“If it wasn’t for the coaching change, I probably would’ve been at Toledo,” Stokes said. “Once the coaching change happened, I was like, ‘I’m decommitting, then [I’ll try] to go higher.’” Stokes landed at Fork Union based on a recommendation from a coach. Attending military school in rural Virginia was a major change from his East Baltimore roots, but Stokes said “everything progressed smoothly” and he got the looks he wanted. The National Prep Showcase was a game-changer in terms of his recruitment. Ole Miss was the first high-major to offer him a scholarship, and Kansas State followed suit. Stokes visited both schools."

I'll say this for sure - Mincy really screwed over Toledo.

How so? I'm not seeing that from reading these posts.

Does this leave us a scholar short? I don't have next year's class in front of me.

I'm pretty sure we have four signed, two guards and two power forwards. JD, Drummond, Juice, and Applewhite's spots are the only ones that need to be filled at this point.

Young coaches move around to move up the ranks all the time and, unfortunately, recruits get attached to coaches instead of the school/program.

Wooow. That's extremely unfortunate. Mincy ditched us for Louisiana Tech???What the hell does that say about the state of our program? It's not like he took the HC gig, he's still an assistant over there. Yikes.

la tech is a really good hoops program and i think mince got a raise, top asst position, and reunited w a head coach he has a connection to. this does show that our recruiting was on point. we identified an undervalued talent and signed him. if mince doesn't leave he's on our roster right now.

I understood that, but I would in no way construe that as being screwed unless he actively undermined our program. Leaving for another job doesn't fit that description IMO.

That's a positive way of looking at it. I don't know Mincy's salary or anything about Louisiana Tech's program, so I'll accept your information on those points. The problem is that when you try to put a positive spin on so many assistants leaving so quickly, it seems like a stretch. Any one move might make sense, but not all of them. Either Coach K is hard to work with, UT pays too low, or there is some other problem that is causing our assistants to leave.

Im guessing its a combo of TK and $$$. Anyone know how our asst. pay ranks?

RE: Former Rocket Hoops commit Kamau Stokes to Kansas State - rocket 51 - 03-07-2015 12:35 PM

I've thought that this season's total under performing had a lot to do with the asst coach mess from early on. That thing with Stacey was pretty weird and you never heard what the deal was. It HAD TO impact this team and our season. We need a D specialist and have PT = Defense effort plain and simple.

I totally agree with the statement above it had to have a huge impact. I also think the pay is the total issue for Mincy, it was with Pedon leaving, I think Thorpe actually left for a lower paying job but it was to work with his best friend. I would not be Opposed to Thorpe replacing Coach K when he leaves but Coacj K can stay as long as he wants to as far as I am concerned
