UC and Burnet Woods - Bearcat2012 - 03-03-2015 12:31 PM

Enjoyed discussing Burnet Woods with Mayor Cranley, Willie Carden, Frank Russell and UC students.

and this from the 24/7 board from ProfMark...

The discussion is about re-vamping Burnett woods, with a german restaurant and beer garden, and making all of it more open, attactive, and safe, so it will actually be used by people and by UC students. Also discussion of putting a walking bridge over MLK so students can easily walk to and from it once it is done. Could be a tailgate place after it is re-done, but the plan is just to improve it and make it a safe park area that people actually use.

Hoping the tailgating thing becomes a reality . Nevertheless , its great that the city and University are working together to make use of this park . So much potential.

I like the German restaurant/beer garden idea. There are so many in Munich in similar park settings as Burnet Woods and they're always a lot of fun.

Sounds great, but Im not holding my breath for them to actually do any of this any time soon.

I can actually see it happening relatively soon. I fully understand not holding your breath, but this is an old project already. I've already run out of breath on it, so maybe it's finally going to happen- especially since it has been revisited and refined. Also, I think the success of Washington Park gives it some momentum to coattail off of.

My proposal:

Step 1: Napalm the Woods
-this will help clean up trash, bums, hobos etc.

Would be a great improvement to the campus. The lake, the planetarium, 89 acres, trails. Perhaps add a sand beach area to part of the lake. The question to be answered is where would the "boys" move to?

I do not think Boehner would approve.

I really have never found Burnett to be very dangerous...especially during the day. Students and gaslight denizens cross through all the time. I'd certainly be in favor of an upgrade, but I never found it to be a habitat for the homeless or the poor.

What does Duane think of the Woods?

Lots of dates to pick up there. And he likes chocolate.

I am sure The "Boys" finds suburban parks and restrooms to conduct their hookups. The last thing on the mind of Boehner.

At least we can stop 05-deadhorse about putting a stadium or arena there.

I cut through there a couple of weeks ago and saw none of the above.

How about a course for the cross country team?

are we talking about thru the woods? i like the idea of a bier garden. there's enough room for such a project(s) without tearing down the woods. i walk thru there on occasion and even have to known to disc golf. the walkway bridge is a must as it takes forever for that light to change and i'm a p*ssy when it comes to crossing that much traffic without a proper right of way. the unsavories i notice hang around the richardson monument. while i might be one of the unsavory folks (i don't congregate around the fountain), those tree huggin' sorts in corduroys and hiking boots, incorporating the woods truly into uc has far more value than building something we don't need. i am fine with a tailgate area. that's a no brainer. some trees shall seek martyrdom for the glory of uc

RE: UC and Burnet Woods - Cataclysmo - 03-04-2015 10:59 AM

There's a whole section of road in front of the nature center that isnt being used for anything. Why havent they already designated that strip as one big tailgate lot?

You could start at Brookline and MLK also. Those streets in there are wide.

When I lived in the area, I cut through the park dozens and dozens of times, and never encountered anything of the sort. Burnet is a fairly well-kept place.
