Rice Track & Field at Texas A&M Friday/Saturday - WRCisforgotten79 - 02-06-2015 10:55 PM

Just a few events tonight, with the bulk of the schedule tomorrow.

Sophomore Cali Roper won the 5,000 in a conservative 17:11.68. Adam Davidson was 7th in the men's 5K with 15:24.19. The men's DMR ran well in 10:10.66, finishing 5th in a tough field that included the winner, UTEP, anchored by NCAA champion Anthony Rotich.

So, I'll be able to report in person on this afternoon's events. Right now, the 60 meters prelims are taking place.

LIVE RESULTS

RE: Rice Track & Field at Texas A&M Friday/Saturday - WRCisforgotten79 - 02-07-2015 02:11 PM

Filip Drozdowski just won his heat of the 60m hurdles in 8.16. He looked as smooth as I have seen him indoors.

RE: Rice Track & Field at Texas A&M Friday/Saturday - WRCisforgotten79 - 02-07-2015 02:40 PM

About to begin the women's shot put. Claire Uke is currently #5 on the NCAA list this season, with a best of 16.97 meters (55' 8¼").

There will be some good competition here, with #23 Megan Smith (TCU), #25 Talore Kelly (Texas State), #26 Brea Garrett (Texas A&M), and #31 Julie Lange (Texas State).

The women's mile (fast section) will start at 2:00. Freshman Madi McClellan will be in the race, along with All-American Rachel Johnson (Baylor), who is one of the top Americans in the steeplechase. Also in the field are Hillary Montgomery of Texas A&M and Lilian Koech, a "freshman" at UTEP (from Kenya).

Also, earlier this season, I saw Ebony White of Houston run a nice 800. I don't know if she'll be able to move up. She does have speed, though.

Because of the setup here, both pole vaults can (and will) take place simultaneously. Each will start at 2:30. I would think this is an inconvenience for those coaches who have athletes in each event.

Chris Pillow is tied for 13th on the NCAA list this year, with a best of 5.35 meters (17' 6½"). Also here is Seth Arnold (Texas State) who is tied for 13th, also. Chase Wolfie (Texas A&M) and Carl Johansson (Texas A&M) are tied for 35th.

For the women, McKenzie Johnson will be making her real debut, as she just got a feel for the event last week at Houston. Marielle Brisbois is coming off of a great performance last week, and she will be joined by Alicia Janke, Ayane Rosano and Jaylon Wesley.

Madi McClellan won't be running the mile.

Maggie Montoya (Baylor) won with 4:40.37, which is #11 on the NCAA list this year. Johnson was 2nd and Montgomery third. That was a surprisingly good effort by Montoya.

"B" section of the women's mile is on the track. Hannah Kay and Allie Schaich are in this heat.

Kay was second in that section and 8th overall from the two sections in 5:04.22. Schiach was third in that section and 9th overall with 5:04.34.

After the 3 preliminary throws in the shot put:

1. Claire Uke, Rice 16.60 meters (54' 5½")
2. Megan Smith, TCU 15.83 (51' 11¼")
3. Brea Garrett, Texas A&M 15.65 (51' 4¼")

RE: Rice Track & Field at Texas A&M Friday/Saturday - WRCisforgotten79 - 02-07-2015 03:20 PM

Men's mile on the track. Will Firth is in 8th at the 800.

Firth finishes 9th in 4:16.01. He never looked good. Last week, he ran the 3,000 and the last 1,000 was ugly. He's got a few weeks to get back to his normal level.

RE: Rice Track & Field at Texas A&M Friday/Saturday - WRCisforgotten79 - 02-07-2015 03:32 PM

In the women's shot put, Brea Garrett (Texas A&M) has her best throw of the year - 16.31 meters (53' 6¼") to move into 2nd behind Uke. The 6th and final round of throws is taking place now.

Claire Uke wins the shot put with best throw of 16.76 (55' 0") from round 5. Garrett finished 2nd, while Talore Kelly (Texas State) goes to 3rd with her best mark of the year in the final round with 16.02 meters.

The men's pole vault is early with the bar at 4.56 meters (14' 11½"). Both Scott Filip and Vitaliy Bilenko have one miss at this height.

The women are at 3.50 meters, and both Alicia Janke and Marielle Brisbois have cleared.

Bilenko is out at 4.56.

Men are at 4.71 meters (15' 5½") while the women are at 3.65 meters (11' 11¾").

RE: Rice Track & Field at Texas A&M Friday/Saturday - WRCisforgotten79 - 02-07-2015 04:02 PM

Women's high jump bar is at 1.64 meters (5' 4½"). Daisy Ding and Belle MacFarlane are competing. Ding just cleared.

In the women's pole vault, Brisbois just cleared 3.65 meters.

Scott Filip, our heptathlete getting in some work in the pole vault, went out at 4.71 meters.

RE: Rice Track & Field at Texas A&M Friday/Saturday - WRCisforgotten79 - 02-07-2015 04:05 PM

Women's pole vault bar now at 3.80 (12' 5½"). Janke just missed her 1st attempt.

Brisbois clears on her 1st attempt!

I just watched McKenzie Johnson -- she looks to be doing the same as last week - just doing run up and swing, without actually vaulting.

Well, McKenzie just actually made a full attempt on her second run. Did not clear. And did not clear on her 3rd and final attempt.

RE: Rice Track & Field at Texas A&M Friday/Saturday - WRCisforgotten79 - 02-07-2015 04:16 PM

Women's pole vault bar now up to 3.95 meters (12' 11½").

Men's bar still at 4.86 meters (15' 11¼"). Chris Pillow is supposed to pass all the way up to 5.31 meters (17' 5").

Brisbois will have one more attempt at 3.95. Brisbois out, but another solid competition for her.

RE: Rice Track & Field at Texas A&M Friday/Saturday - WRCisforgotten79 - 02-07-2015 04:28 PM

Cybil Obiozor finished 9th in the long jump with 5.42 meters (17' 9½").

Justin Gross was 10th in the men's long jump with 6.54 meters (21' 5½").

RE: Rice Track & Field at Texas A&M Friday/Saturday - WRCisforgotten79 - 02-07-2015 06:26 PM

Okay, I took a break to socialize.

Chris Pillow won the pole vault with 5.51 meters (18' 1"). That moves him to #8 on the NCAA list this year.

Daisy Ding was 4th in the triple jump with 12.43 meters (40' 9½"), after finishing 9th in the high jump. That triple jump is among the top 50 on the NCAA list.

Eleanor Wardlesworth was 5th in the 3,000 meters in 10:06.53. Brad Dohner was 4th in the men's 3,000 in 8:33.43.

In the men's shot put, Uche Ugwunze was 6th with a mark of 14.33 meters (47' 0¼").
