And you get a stipend... and you get a stipend - StanMolsonMan - 01-28-2015 09:51 AM

Tech ready to dole out stipends

What is interesting here is this... Tech's stipend in downtown Atlanta is $1,600. UGA in Athens is $2,600. Tennessee's is $5,500 a year to go to in Knoxville. That is a pretty good spread. A five year athlete... that is a difference of $20k between going to Tech and Tennessee. And I guarantee that 1600 in Atlanta is like $500 bucks in Tennessee with the costs of living. So that spread is more like $25k.

Houston is one of the G%s that has said they will cover the cost for all scholarship athletes. Its a $1M hit to their annual expenses.

. . . and so it begins, long term . . can't be good for college athletics, IMHO . . . let the bidding wars begin . . .

Its full cost of attendance. Its not a big deal.

I hope our bag of skittles and free movie tickets will be enough here at Southern.

cost of living in Athens is probably half of what it is in Atlanta.

. . granted, but this is only the opening .. . perhaps it never amounts to much more than it is now, on the other hand . . . who's to say it can't/won't escalate . . . . another way to further divide the haves from the have nots? I just hope that in the long run, this is not something that damages college athletics . . .

I would not say half. The Knoxville amount is interesting.

We are already divided. P5 and G5. It wont escalate much more because ultimately nobody wants to test the Feds. You will see it escalate inn other areas such as facilities now that you can offer unlimited meals. Campus cafeterias in football operations buildings will be like 5 star restaurants.

Hopefully it goes to such outrageous extremes that it attracts outside reform.

Sad to have to hope for that.

Full cost of attendance is a a Federal thing. I am sure most of us filled out a FAFSA form. So it will be nearly impossible to go beyond that without jeopardizing non profit tax exempt status.

RE: And you get a stipend... and you get a stipend - Usajags - 01-28-2015 10:49 AM

Who is doing the oversight on how much the cost of attendance really is and how much the stipend will be??? Is it a school function or is the NCAA setting that limit???

Is this a State stipend or a federal work study type program?

Quote:Cost-of-attendance totals are determined by each school according to federally created guidelines and can have significant variance.

What worries me is that if the schools know where the gaps are, there will be exploitation of them.

I imagine it will differ depending on where the money is coming from. Houston and believe GT both mentioned that they will rely on donors to cover the costs When you get your FAFSA back with your full cost of attendance amount I dont think it matters how you reach that amount. Most students do it with a combination of grants, loans, work study and mom and dad. In this case that gap will be filled by a check from some part of the university whether its the foundation or the university directly.

Exactly and those divisions already exist as well. The only way this really hurts any of us is if we choose to forego stipends or we lowball them too much.

But you (the school) report a full cost of attendance amount to the government. You KNOW what the gap is between what youre providing today via grant in aid and the full cost of attendance. Its just that today the gap is being filled by a bag man and now you will get an official check.

I have to believe that the conferences will meet and set some guidelines and rules. This is so new that anything you see thrown out there is subject to change.
