So the Southern Miss MBB game just got a little weird ... - Orange County Owl - 01-20-2015 07:21 PM

Southern Miss has now released a statement officially announcing that the school is self-imposing postseason ban for this year.

Southern Miss players refused to practice today after being notified of the postseason ban, sources told ESPN.

Is this out of the blue, or was there already news of a possible investigation?

If out of the blue, then whatever is behind this must be pretty serious for the school to act that preemtively.

It's not like S Miss was going anywhere in post season unless it was to Denny's.

Applies to the CUSA tourney...also Tennessee may be worried.

First, Charlotte baseball, and now this.

What a great conference for our school (at least the SWC had big-time schools that were cheating) ...

Oh, whatever. Every D1 conference has these problems.

Well this means we only have to finish ahead of one team to be in the conference tourney. Though USM very well may finish last anyway.

Just remind the SoMiss players about UAB football so they can go back to being great up for the opportunity, even if they can't make the postseason this year.

The Bible quote is about Elisha cursing the children in the name of the LORD that mocked his bald head. Two she bears then tore 42 children to pieces. Is that why Baylor picked the bear as its mascot?

Owls 8 or favorites

Reports now are that practice was called off due to all the injuries. S Miss leading scorer was injured in the last game and hasn't practiced all week his status is up in the air.

If they call for a forfeit, I hope it's soon so we can avoid the drive in lousy weather 04-rock

What is the rule for minimum number of players for a team? Could they, for instance, play the whole game with only five or four players if they chose to? Or is their hand forced? (Not sure how many players they actually have available.)

All this is really shocking about Southern Miss. There were such a powerhouse in football, basketball, and baseball in the old Conf USA. What has happened to their sport program?

The SWC was much, much worse that this! IIRC at one point every single member except Rice was on some sort of NCAA-imposed penalty.

I'm guessing that if you were to ask the right Southern Miss fan and open a bar tab, you might get a four hour answer to that. From my perspective, they made a mistake hiring a long-term FB coach (Jeff Bower?), nearly proved me epic-ally wrong with Larry Fedora, then their entire program went all to hell when he left.

Mississippi State and Mississippi both hired good football coaches, and there isn't enough football talent in that state for 3 schools? That would explain football, at least.

They had a long run of football success, but I don't think it was ever based on getting large numbers of SEC-caliber recruits.

Some of their fans have said that they used to get the best of the second-tier recruits in the South but now they share those with a bunch of other AAC/C-USA/Sun Belt programs.

More than anything, I think, it's very difficult for a small-budget program to overcome an atrocious hire like Ellis Johnson.

They probably should have practiced

This is straight from the rumor mill, and should be given the appropriate level of credibility, but there have been whispers that they were doing some, shall we say, creative things with their strength and conditioning program, and those got shut down about the time everything cratered.

Both teams used 8 players last night. USM's 3rd leading scorer in last night's game with 9 pts., Bingaya, came off the bench. Rice's 3 bench players totaled 8 pts.
