Bruce Pearl Wiki - bluebacker - 01-10-2015 02:32 PM

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_Pearl

Other than the lie to the NCAA about having a recruit at his house what other NCAA violations has he been slapped with.

He was a whistle blower in 1988-89.....

The man has paid his dues and worked his way up the coaching food chain.

He's won big everywhere he's been and none of the places he's been are as good as Memphis for basketball.

He's 470-150 W-L all time..... .758 winning percentage.

RE: Bruce Pearl Wiki - Brother Bluto - 01-10-2015 02:34 PM

Josh Pastner is the only coach who has never cheated, lied or cursed in his entire life. He once admitted to chopping down the cherry tree as a kid.

Everyone knows Pearl would be a huge success here, don't think that is in doubt. I think he takes the job in a heartbeat if offered. He would change the way the fan base feels about the program overnight. Everyone would immediately be back on board for next season and ready for a new and improved brand of basketball. I'm in.

I like Bruce... I think he could win BIG here! 04-rock

RE: Bruce Pearl Wiki - Sundanceuiuc - 01-10-2015 03:14 PM

If, IF, we are replacing our current coach, we could do far worse than Bruce Pearl in my opinion. I am a fan of his, and understand I am in the minority on that point.

His past transgressions are worth concern, but he is a quality coach who wins games and engenders a lot of fan attention for his persona and attitude. Plus he's never had a recruiting area as strong as Memphis as his base.

There are others I call first, but I'd be happy if he were Memphis' next HC, assuming Pastner doesn't fix things in the next 18 months...

RE: Bruce Pearl Wiki - Brother Bluto - 01-10-2015 03:20 PM

Pearl probably fits the demographic here more than any coach except for maybe Frank Martin.

RE: Bruce Pearl Wiki - mphsfan - 01-10-2015 04:56 PM

While I think he would be successful here, I don't think he would be hired.

This University is trying to make itself attractive for the next round of conference movement. Like it or not, our image is marked by our final four games that have been wiped away. This administration won't hire someone who has had an issue with the NCAA, just for sake of appearances.

Memphis is full of rich, white, middle aged men of Jewish faith.

Other than turning what would have been a minor infraction into a major ordeal by lying to the NCAA what other NCAA issues has he had?

I thought there was a couple of others but I can't find them.

If we can get him in here I *think* he'd be winning big by his third year. If JP stays another year then I think it pushes the full recovery out another year to year 4.

Pearl would probably kill it here. Let's get this done.

I'm afraid I have to capitulate. Josh is a little too tough on the wrong things and too soft on others. The team is being decimated. Not sure he will be able to recover and recruit well here especially in Memphis. Pearl has my respect. I thought they played dirty in the No. 1 vs No. 2 game in '08 but they won. They pulled jerseys in the whole game and got away with it. I blame the refs for that.

RE: Bruce Pearl Wiki - 72Tiger - 01-10-2015 05:28 PM

He had an 'unintentional' bump with a recruit in South Carolina during a dead period while at UTK. This was after the BBQ fiasco. Minor infraction, but really dumb considering he was waiting on word of his punishment for the BBQ deal.

His AD at UTK didn't trust him at the end.

Stirred up crap to try and get his job back (lobbied the big boosters even though the admin told him no). This is what led to Cuonzo quitting.

Lied about a player (Brian Williams) having to sit for a hurt back when he was really out for skipping a drug test. Williams was jumping/chest bumping his teammates during player intros of that game with the 'bad back'.

Dude is just a liar all around. Yes, he can coach and motivate and rev up the fan base, but his antics will eventually bring the house down around him.

I think Pearl would win big here but I believe your assessment is spot on. I don't see him being hired because of his baggage and public perception.

The best job in college basketball took calipari as he was being hit with another vacated final four. I don't think we are above taking a man who got nailed for doing something that is now legal.

RE: Bruce Pearl Wiki - Tiger Greg - 01-10-2015 06:51 PM

Lying and conspiracy are legal now?

Who'd a thunk it?

Kentucky is already a member of the P5 and provides big ratings for ESPN. Of course UK took him because they knew the media would look the other way and that is exactly what happened. I wish I had a dollar for every time Jimmy Dykes talked about what a great guy Cal when was he was calling games for the Cayuts.

Memphis is trying to get into the P5 so there is a big difference.

Pearl has made it further in the tourny than Pastner in less time at Milwaukee. Then made it further than Pastner in 2 years at TN. What could he do here?

Wow. But let's not hire him. JP has us on the right track.

That won't have anything to do with it
