Andy Pepper - Chipdip2 - 12-23-2014 08:55 AM

For those out of towners, Andy Pepper is the weekend sports guy at Channel 3. He's got a great wit, he likes the community, and if they choose to, he'll make a great replacement for Ed Kengerski.

My daughter was caught on camera dancing at the game, and Pepper made a sweet comment about her. It was funny because she had no idea the camera man was filming her (he was like four feet away), she oblivious when she's dancing, then she saw him, froze in her tracks, and ran back up to us.

Anyhow, I went to WWMT and looked up his bio, and he did a blog on his wife's delivery. One thing he said I found really impressive.

"I have spent a prodigious amount of time in my life desiring things that - big picture - just don’t really matter all that much. Big market TV jobs, awards, recognition, Salary and suits just don’t seem to matter when you are staring into the blue eyes of your firstborn child. And it wasn’t long afterwards that I realized having a daughter had already made me a better person.
There are numerous examples, but the best one is this: my omnipresent vanity driven desire to lose 20 pounds? Instantly replaced by a health conscious desire to lose 20 pounds so that my fat, almost 45 year old bottom can live long enough to one day attend my daughters High School graduation, and to eventually walk her down the aisle (although to be clear, no boys will be getting near my daughter for at least 23 years. Untrustworthy little scumbags)

I would still like to own a luxury car someday. I desperately want to go to the Masters. I hope to go to Hawaii, and to one day drink a pint or 6 in Ireland.
But with my daughter lying just a few feet away as I write this, none of that seems all that important right now."

We were pretty lucky to have both Kengerski and Pepper on the local sports scene. They were as good as any duo in the state of Michigan, IMHO. Great guys professionally, and even better human beings.

Agreed on both men. CD, thanks for posting Andys comments. That really puts things into perspective for all of us.

I really liked Ed and was glad to have gotten to know him over the years. Wish him the best of luck. But I also think that Andy has paid his dues and deserves the shot to take the reigns as the lead sports guy at TV3.

Interesting how the cycle just kinda continues to roll on every 15-20 years. Growing up I remember Craig Kann and John Koch. Kann left for Golf Channel and Ed K stepped in. Koch moved on what 13 or so years go and Pepper took his spot, while Ed moved into the #1 roll. Andy will now assume that spot and they will bring in another guy to cut his teeth and probably eventually take over for Andy 15 or so years down the road.

Yup this is the old school way of doing things. Rare anymore.

“To finish the moment, to find the journey’s end in every step of the road, to live the greatest number of good hours, is wisdom.”...RWE

CD, I know that YOU know this.

Merry Christmas.

Hey, we persevere in life regardless of the obstacles. It's a little easier when you have a strong family and wonderful kids. They give you a purpose.

Merry Christmas
