Semi OT - A tweet from the Ole Miss head coach - Orange County Owl - 12-19-2014 05:48 PM

"Our Football Team earned the highest team GPA (2.57) in recorded history of the football program.” Thanks @UMTrueRebel for a great year."

This has created quite a stir on Twitter today - with people all over Freeze (and the SEC in general) for bragging about a 2.57 GPA (particularly as an all-time program high).

At least, I guess, he is talking academics during bowl season.

Last year, Tulane had the highest in CUSA with a 2.809...anyone know what Rice had?

It's difficult to find a published number. But I know that it is quite high. Rice students are very good students, but grade inflation is also a serious reality. Well more than half of all course grades given at the university are in the A range.

Here's some published info on the threshold for being in the top 30%:

Spring 2014: 3.878

AY 2013-14
Natural Science: 3.85
Music: 3.85
Humanities: 3.84
Engineering: 3.81
Social Science: 3.80
Architecture: 3.74
Average across schools: 3.817

And the AY 2013-24 Top 10% threshold: 3.992

I think my public research university valedictorian had a 3.98.

It used to not be that way. When I was at Rice in the 90's the average GPA was down around 3 and I made the President's Honor Roll with a 3.67 one semester.

Professors could give A+, but I don't think they counted as 4.3 for the purposes of GPA. In 4 years on the quarters system, I got one A+. The final exam was 20 multiple choice questions and took me seven minutes. The professor was the research star of her department and a MacArthur 'genius grant' winner.
