Why couldn't the Big12 Champ play ND? - Dasville - 12-18-2014 02:08 PM

It wouldn't be a "Championship" game but the 13th P5 match-up they both need.
Have it on Championship weekend. Split the proceeds right down the middle. Home and home or neutral site.

Why not?

For 1 it isn't allowed. Secondly why would they split proceeds with Notre Dame when they could create a championship game themselves.

What if the ACC, ND and the Big12 supported it? Include the game as part of their petition.

RE: Why couldn't the Big12 Champ play ND? - msm96wolf - 12-18-2014 02:30 PM

Exactly why would the ACC support it? They want ND as a full time member, no way the ACC would allow ND to do this. We all just need and wait to see what happens in the NCAA meetings and how the vote turns out on CCG deregulation.

Hawaii gets it.

Yep- And why would the Big 12 want to play a horrible 7-5 ND team? To hurt their Strength of Schedule?

to get teams to play at Hawaii. HUGE difference there...

pretty much can say this has no chance in hell.

There were 7-5 this season.

What's that matter? Are you saying that if Baylor played a 7-5 ND as a 13th game, that Ohio State still would have passed them in the final rankings?

It would sure suck for the B1G, SEC and Pac 12 if ND, Big 12, and ACC joined forces with some other Conferences wouldn't it?

Yes, they would have beaten us by 70 or more.. Our defense was a sieve .

Watch what a offensively challenged does to us.

Y'all would still be in the Music City Bowl regardless. It wouldn't cost you a bowl spot.

Beings that 5-7 Northwestern already beat ND this year, yes.

Why would it suck? outside of Texas, Oklahoma and FSU, the B12 and ACC teams don't move the meter.

That is one of the Big 12's biggest issues - only two brand name football teams, and both were down this year.

Big 12 used to have a couple more - Nebraska and TAMU. Hell, even Colorado won a MNC.

Well.... at least the Hawaii concept is legal. 04-cheers Doubtful to be done, for the reasons you are alluding to, but at least it is possible under the rules. 03-shhhh

But to that end, while it would stretch the legality of the rule, I believe the Hawaii exemption simply states that playing @Hawaii allows you to have a 13th game: does it say you have to actually play the Hawaii Rainbows? If not, then they could host their championship game in Hawaii as a get around of the rule. At least in theory. 03-idea

Why not?

Can only play 12 regular season games..unless you go on the road and play Hawaii, then you can play a 13th game (and it can be a home game). Of course Baylor would never schedule a road game in Hawaii...

Correct. The rule doesn't strictly require you to play the exempt game against Hawai'i, it could technically be a game played by two mainland teams but "sponsored" by the University of Hawai'i.

However, common sense suggests that, even if you could pay the University of Hawai'i to "sponsor" a 13th game between two mainland teams seeking a last-minute resume boost to impress the CFP committee, it would only work one time at the most. You would tick off enough people by exploiting the loophole that the rule would be changed ASAP to prevent such shenanigans in the future.

(The game would also be poorly attended by fans of both teams, and would be an enormous expense for them, but maybe TV money could offset that, who knows.)

Here's the rule, from http://www.ncaapublications.com/productdownloads/D114JAN.pdf

Quote:17.9.5.2 Annual Exemptions. [FBS/FCS]
The maximum number of football contests shall exclude the following:

(j) Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico. [FBS/FCS]
Any football games played in Hawaii, Alaska or Puerto Rico, respectively, either against or under the sponsorship of an active member institution located in Hawaii, Alaska or Puerto Rico, by a Division I member institution located outside the area in question.

Maybe. I think enough might feel that if they have to to to that extreme to get around the rule, to just let them have it. LOL

In this hypothetical scenario, it would be purely a TV game, for the locals. Maybe the conference sets up a few "affordable" charters set to leave from each school, so people who want to go can do some at least somewhat affordably. Aside from that, you set it up as a free game with free tickets, sell it on TV (still get $10-$15 mil which more than covers the cost), and use it as a bump for your teams both to get a lil' extra money, and help with the SOS boost. It helps Hawaii' too, because there will be a lot of Big 12 teams scheduling home and homes with them, trying to get a game with them the last week of the season, in hopes of then making the CCG, and getting the "advantage" of already being in Hawaii.

Granted this is a totally wild and unlikely scenario, but I think it could be feasible, in terms of being "possible" to even do, even it no one would ever seriously consider it.

Edit: I did not realize Puerto Rico was an eligible host site. Host the game in Puerto Rico, where the travel is not near as bad or expensive. In that instance, it might actually be somewhat possible.
