If he makes his 'debut' due to RG's mishap, this could be an opportunity for Tommy Williams to show how long, explosive, athletic beats long, heavy, immobile most nights. UNCG has a lot of the latter, multiple forwards and centers of traditional size, some with perhaps too much on the scale. Bates might also make a move, if he feels inclined.

I think Banks will receive most if not all of Giplaye's minutes.

RE: Official Game Thread: UNC Greensboro - shampoo - 12-10-2014 10:47 PM

Think so? I've been wondering about William's performance in practice. Banks, too; he's not looked that confident in the small playing time in games so far. There's not much to compare with Williams, yet, on D1 level. Banks did have some good moments last year....Whoever plays needs to emulate Giplaye's effort, if not intensity.

RE: Official Game Thread: UNC Greensboro - ETSUfan1 - 12-10-2014 11:03 PM

I've seen no sign that Bartow intends to play Williams. He has said he meant to get Banks more minutes from time to time, but I don't think I've ever heard him talk about Tommy that much.

Just a gut feeling, I could be wrong.

Banks defense is terrible, he gets lucky on some blocks but that is only after the man has beaten him and he gets a piece of it from behind.

Tommy Williams has appeared twice against 2 weak teams (Milligan and UVA-Wise) in garbage time. There’s very little that you can tell from such games. But both times he has brought energy and aggression to the floor. He averages 7 minutes, 4 rebounds, 5.5 points on 40% from the field and 43% (3-7) from the line with 0.5 turnovers. In a 20 minute game that would be 11.4 rebounds and 15.7 points.

Against those same 2 teams Isaac Banks averaged 9.5 minutes, 4.5 rebounds and 4.5 points on 4-5 from the field (80%) with 0-0 from the line. That would be 9.5 rebounds and 9.5 efficient points in a 20 minute game.

In 30 JUCO games last year, Tommy averaged 12.5 points per game on .514 from the field, .691 from the line, 9.9 rebounds and 1.0 assists.

The most important thing may not appear in the stat sheets: how well these two can defend and box out in the post?

A lot of the Bucs hopes for this season may now depend on at least one of these guys stepping forward.

RE: Official Game Thread: UNC Greensboro - swvabucsfan - 12-11-2014 08:13 AM

UNC Greensboro is 3-6 and just finished struggling to an 82-78 home court win over D3 Greensboro College, a team which usually spends its time striving against Warren Wilson and Guilford. http://www.uncgspartans.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPID=137660&DB_OEM_ID=32200&ATCLID=209803541

Better not go into this one feeling cocky, though, because we do not match up very well against UNC Greensboro. They have a substantial size advantage at guard as well as in the front court, and have 69 made 3’s on .365 shooting. Because of their size, they may be a tougher matchup for us than Wofford. They went to one of the top programs in the nation: Indiana with 5 national title banners in the rafters and proceeded to shoot the lights out, breaking a 44 year old record for made 3’s in Bloomington and coming within 8 of upsetting the Hoosiers in the hallowed home of Bobby Knight and Branch McCracken. http://www.uncgspartans.com//ViewContent.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=32200&CONTENT_ID=1048564

These guys have a short 8 man rotation: 4 guys get 28 to 33 minutes; beefy 6’8” 280 post player R.J. White needs more rest and gets 24. 3 other guys get 10 to 14. 6’6” 205 All SoCon guard Tevon Saddler reminds me a little of USCU’s Torrey Craig, always a matchup problem for our smaller guards, and 6’7” shooter Nick Paulos could also be trouble on the perimeter.

GUARDS:
6’6” 205 SO Tevon Saddler; 32.8 min., 15.6 ppg, 4-16 from 3; 4.2 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 5.4 to’s, 2.1 steals
6’0” 176 SO Clay Byrd; 32.3 min., 9.0 ppg, 21-68 (.309) from 3; 1.7 assists, 0.6 to’s,
6’1” 185 RJR Asad Lamot; 13.8 min., 2.4 ppg, 4-14 from 3; 0.7 assists, 1.0 to’s, 0.6 steals
They average 7.7 made 3’s per game on .365 shooting. They make about 14.6 to’s per game, but force 15.3 from their opponents. They get 8 steals and give 5.7 to their opponents.

SWINGMEN:
6’7” 185 SR Nicholas Paulos; 37.1 min., 12.3 ppg, 29-63 (.460) from 3, 4.1 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 to’s

FRONTCOURT:
6’8” 280 RSO R.J. White; 26.1 min.; 12.9 ppg on 7-17 (.412) from 3; 7.4 rpg
6’5” 240 JR Kayel Locke; 28.3 min.; 12.2 ppg; 5.1 rpg
6’9” 250 SO Jordy Kuiper; 14.2 min.; 2.4 ppg, 3.6 rpg
6’9” 230 RJR Ben Dickinson, 11.6 min.; 3.3 ppg, 2.8 rpt
Despite their size, they get outrebounded 32.4 to 34.1. They score 71.1, but allow 74.1 to their opponents. They have size but are slow.

Play with intensity and focus for 2 halves and this game should be high scoring fun. Play half a game like we did against Western Carolina, and we’ll be scrambling to pull it out at the end.

The search for answers in the front court takes another turn.

Pardon the cliché, but anyone can't beat anyone on a given night. Just ask Incarnate Word, who beat Nebraska last night in Lincoln, NE:
http://scores.espn.go.com/ncb/recap?gameId=400595404

Greensboro's shooting clinic at Indiana concerns me. I'm also concerned how we'll compensate for Giplaye's toughness, interior defense, and rebounding. This is golden opportunity for Banks or Williams to demonstrate that they deserve 10 minutes or so a game.

RE: Official Game Thread: UNC Greensboro - shampoo - 12-11-2014 08:10 PM

Beyond the measurable impact of losing Giplaye, I'm now worried about the psychological toll on the team. This could be the hardest game of the season for those reasons that escape the records.

RE: Official Game Thread: UNC Greensboro - ETSUfan1 - 12-12-2014 08:38 PM

Vegas has the Bucs as 12 point favorites. I think that's too high.

What is scary for me is our ability to give up leads in a hurry. That lead against WCU just evaporated. We have to learn to maintain leads once we get them. I am hoping the 12 points are for real though.

RE: Official Game Thread: UNC Greensboro - shampoo - 12-12-2014 09:44 PM

Those odds may be counting a contributing Ron Giplaye?

RE: Official Game Thread: UNC Greensboro - etsubuc - 12-12-2014 09:48 PM

For what its worth, I am betting that we come out pretty motivated for this game and run away with it early. I think we will cover the 12 points.

RE: Official Game Thread: UNC Greensboro - ETSUfan1 - 12-12-2014 09:52 PM

This game will tell me a great deal about the makeup of our team, because after Giplaye's injury, it would be easy for the wind to come out from underneath our sails.

RE: Official Game Thread: UNC Greensboro - Buc66 - 12-13-2014 09:41 AM

It is an exciting start; hope the Bucs can pick up where they left off before exam break. Winning at this mid-major level is good; unrealistic expectations are not good. I believe that ETSU is in a good place, back in the SoCon, playing recognized regional opponents in a rather compact geographic area --- all of this in the context of an athletic funding reality with the honest accompanying realistic expectations. Go Bucs and keep it going for a long time!

Murry just is not going to let Williams off the bench.

Frustrating game. Too many empty possessions.
