In the aftermath of UAB President Ray Watts announcing the football program would be killed Tuesday, the sophomore has myriad options.

Since Tuesday, the 6-foot-1, 228-pounder said nearly every school in Conference USA has contacted him as well as Wisconsin, Indiana, Vanderbilt, Louisville and Boise St.

He's met face-to-face with coaches from Vanderbilt, Nevada and Middle Tennessee State. That's what happens when you set a school record for rushing yards with 1,587 yards, second in Conference USA, and tie another one with 13 rushing touchdowns as a sophomore and your school's administration decides to shut down the program.

"I just knew that I was going to have a lot more responsibility this year, a lot more on my shoulders," said Howard who helped guide the Blazers to a 6-6 (4-4) mark and become eligible for bowl competition for the first time in a decade. "I was just ready to take it on however it came.

" Howard said he's still processing everything and coming to grips with the fact that UAB football is no more. He hasn't started dwindling his list of suitors down but did say he will make a decision later this month with an eye on enrolling wherever he signs in January. "I don't want to get too far behind," he said. In just two years, the first of which, he shared time with Clay-Chalkville alumnus Darrin Reaves, now with the Carolina Panthers, Howard moved up to third on UAB's all-time rushing list with 2,468 yards."I always felt like I had the talent to play at any level," Howard said. "I guess they're starting to realize that now."

A SBC team could use this kid

Read the entire article. A SBC team could use this kid and it doesn't seem that any SBC school even contacted him. He's setting records as a Sophomore.

We don't have an opening for him. Why don't you guys recruit him if you want him that badly?

Exactly. Do you think the writer is going to list the SBC schools that are in the hunt? What needle does that move?

I wouldn't mind having another Matt Breida.

Yeah I think he isnt going to an SBC with the offers he has on the table. I know we are in contact with a lot of their players. If he wanted to come to Atlanta, Troy or Mobile any of those schools would make room.

Maybe you or UL don't have room for him, but some other Sun Belt team could use a record setting running back. If every team iin the conference is stacked with record setting backs, then the conference is doing better than I thought.

Every school in the SBC would make room for this kid, we have room... Trust me.

out top 2 RB's are a sophomore and freshman this year, and honestly both compliment each other perfectly. Don't really have a high need for him. However, I certainly wouldn't complain if he came to Southern.

Just like they said he was contacted by almost every c-usa school, the writer could have said he was contacted by sun belt schools if he was.

Forget it. I thought some of the SBC conference schools would be interested in him and maybe they are.

I'm done with being attacked. I never seen so many people get so defensive, wow!.

RE: why isn't any SBC school recruiting record setting UAB RB? - NCeagle - 12-08-2014 04:45 PM

I would be worried if our coaching staff had to be notified by a forum member about the UAB running back. I'm sure if our coaches are interested, they have talked to him.
I don't think it would be like "Hey guys, NCeagle from CSN said we should check out this guy from UAB. What do you think?"

RE: why isn't any SBC school recruiting record setting UAB RB? - panama - 12-08-2014 05:05 PM

I would venture to say every G5 school in AL or in a state bordering AL has talked to him. Remember, he is a transfer and as such does not count toward your 25 LOIs and of course he is eligible immediately. So yeah everyone is talking to him.

RE: why isn't any SBC school recruiting record setting UAB RB? - RoyK - 12-08-2014 06:45 PM

I agree I think every team prolly has talked to him it's the nature of the game.

Hearing this morning that NCAA taking a hard line and WILL count UAB transfers against a school's yearly max of 25. That changes a lot.

wow..... way to go NCAA. screw these kids even more.

RE: wonder if any SBC school is talking to record setting UAB RB? - panama - 12-09-2014 09:31 AM

Big time! Especially considering that there are three recent move ups in AL and GA all running way under 85 scholarships and could take on some of these kids. Most of their roster is going to end up in FCS with this ruling.

Total garbage. NCAA has no soul.

Actually, if you think about it, this will help them end up somewhere they will play... Not buried on some power houses scout team. If you take them, you want them and plan on them contributing right away.

I doubt that is the end result. And I doubt anyone is in Birmingham looking for scout team players.

G5 and FCS will be the primary players in this, not P5 teams.
