I don't think many of us -- me included -- realize how surreal recruiting is. It's been mentioned on here before, I believe, that we had a recruit sometime the last couple of years whose parents wanted him to attend ODU. That used to be money in the bank. What mom wanted, and all that. he went somewhere else against their wishes. We're involved with another one in the same situation now, except he's got a ways to go before committing to anyone. Other than playing time, the reason there are so many transfers in D-1 ball these days is that kids are blown away by the sales job and don't really do a good job of investigating all aspects of a university, like what their degree will help them achieve in life when they don't make the NBA.

My new neighbor is a huge Purdue fan. I already invited him over for the game. =] I'll see if I can get some info out of him.

By all reports Caver is going to be very good and he's a freshman. So, I do find it strange, but as long as he keeps bringing in enough talent to be a top 50-100 team most years I'm not going to complain. And that seems to be happening. Just keep winning with the guys we get.

Top 50-100 is not good enough. Our good years should be 30 to 40 and rebuilding years 60 to 70. 50 to 100 is status quo, we have far more potential than that.
We were top 40 or 50 last year and should be at least that this year, and perhaps better if our veteran players improved and the new players mesh well.

And we weren't in the tournament last year. I think last year was really good for where we are as a program, but my hope is that we get better, and better puts us in the 30-40 range in my opinion.

JJ can put the best foot forward and present everything the program has past-present-and-future, but ultimately the kids make the decision and no one knows their thoughts except them. JJ is doing a fine job in my opinion. I was one of the most sardonic posters on here when he got hired, but the man has proved time and time again that I was wrong and that he was the right man for the job. He's got my vote.

This is ridiculous. There is a reason some coaches are better recruiters than others. The way you present it, there is no need for a recruiting budget because handing flyers out to players with a few bullet points is all the coaches can do.
Recruiting is very cut throat and goes well beyond how it was presented. If Jones can present it better, it won't matter when the other guy is offering the recruit a car provided by the car dealership booster paid for by a no-show job.

My point was that the previous poster made it sound like there isn't much a coach can do besides tell the kid about the school. It seemed as if he thought all coaches were on equal footing and you win some and lose some. That couldn't be further from the truth, but your point is valid, that some kids want something you cannot offer. That said, I would say that the ones that have you in their final 3 are to some extent winnable by recruiting skill.

Agree and I think we'd all rather be on the right side of the bubble. Still pretty remarkable how far we came in 2 years. One more regular season win plus consistency and we are there. If transfers and coaches sons get get us there, I'm onboard.

Agreed. We couldn't ask for more than what the team achieved last year.

Dang, saw all the post action, thought we had a commitment!

RE: 2016 Old Dominion Basketball Recruiting Den - Monarch Homselr - 10-19-2015 01:54 PM

I think of it this way.. If I am correct that both Stiths are not taking up a scholarship that's the only reason we have two schollies left!

Does anyone have anything on this "big time transfer" people are talking about? I highly doubt we are getting a big time transfer right now.

Well, actually we could have asked them to win one or two more road contests. That probably would have put us in the Dance. I am tempering my expectations for this year based on the teams history of poor road play. Once they prove they can win fairly consistently on the road I'll feel better about their chances of making the dance and actually getting past the first game.

Yeah. I could have, but chose to keep it positive. I am feeling good about basketball right now, and they did have a very good year, so no need to bring up the areas that were subpar.

If I recall correctly, we were at one point in the season last a top 25 team. Does that not qualify as being at least in the 30-40 range.

RE: 2016 Old Dominion Basketball Recruiting Den - Monarchblue - 10-19-2015 07:30 PM

We were. But the tournament committee did not see us as such. Also, the original point was that consistently being in that range, with down years in the 60-70 range is what would satisfy me.

Tre is on campus as we speak. He will be here for a long weekend leaving Sunday. I hope he likes it and commits to us. I know we want him too!

RE: 2016 Old Dominion Basketball Recruiting Den - monarx - 10-23-2015 08:22 AM

I would be very excited if he gave us a verbal before he left. This cat is supposed to be very good. Add him to the list of players we have for the next 2-3 seasons and the future would look very bright indeed.

RE: 2016 Old Dominion Basketball Recruiting Den - mac - 10-23-2015 11:33 AM

Love reading about this kid. One of the top players in OK. Are you kidding me? It would be awesome to out recruit the AK Razorbacks for one. Jones and staff are really building something great here. Lets get this kid to go with Caver, Porter and the rest. Hope it happens, you wont find a much better coach to play anywhere.

RE: 2016 Old Dominion Basketball Recruiting Den - blewbyu - 10-23-2015 06:56 PM

At the men's basketball season kickoff dinner wed. night the thing that was most impressive was the quality of our men's basketball players. As a group, and I mean each and everyone of these young men were outstanding individuals. I am sure Tre will be also. The fact he went to different high schools or changed his mind about what college he wants to attend says nothing about his character.Coach Jones knows what he wants in an individual. Tre fits the bill. Let's hope we get a chance to get to know him.

WTF, did the mods erase posts?? I didn't see anything thatviolated the rules, just lots of people disagreeing. Hope this isn't an example of censorship because some have contrary opinions. Blind faith in the judgement of anyone can be a fatal mistake.

RE: 2016 Old Dominion Basketball Recruiting Den - T-Mac - 10-23-2015 10:00 PM

Yeah, I was kind of surprised to see posts erased. Everything was respectful disagreeing from what I saw.
