RE: 2016 Old Dominion Basketball Recruiting Den - Blue_Trombone - 07-07-2016 10:26 AM

What was the reasoning behind Stith and Porter not playing at the same time? Unless it's a problem with their offense/defense combo I don't know why they wouldn't consider it an option.

I really like the flexibility of our lineups this upcoming year, especially since we have the Spain trip occurring at the exact right moment. If these guys can build some chemistry there can be some deadly lineups.

I am really interested to see how Baker and Taylor develop in the offseason. They're gearing up for their last season of wearing a Monarch uniform and I hope they're working hard to improve their game. If Taylor can improve his offensive game, at least to the point of getting consistent tip-ins he could be deadly. Although he also has to getting better at his passing vision. There were a few boneheaded passes this past season that were infuriating. Baker I think could be a "3 and D" guy for us. Not sure if he'll be starting, but if he can get really consistent at the three, which I think we saw flashes of the past few years, then that combine with his fantastic guard defense would make him at least a valuable role player.

Here's to hoping there's a Blue and White game this year.

RE: 2016 Old Dominion Basketball Recruiting Den - Gilesfan - 07-07-2016 10:42 AM

The problem is primarily space on offense and guarding the 4 spot on defense. We essentially are projecting a 4 man rotation for the 4/5 spots.

Kah- can stretch the floor and has a face up game.
Stith- primarily a guy that works in the low block, not really effective outside of the box on offense or defense
Porter- primarily a defender. Not much of an offensive game outside of lob and Oreb.
Taylor- similar to Porter

The problem with playing Stith and Porter/Taylor together is it clogs up the lane where we need them to be open due to our 1-3 players being primarily guys that drive to the basket. They will have to play together a lot this year, but I think Kay/Stith should get the majority of minutes together simply based on fit.

I've learned through many years of fandom that you can only count on freshmen doing one thing. And that is making a crap load of mistakes. How good they were in high school means absolutely nothing, especially at our level.

I think Jones is going to use Stith and Porter some together and that is one of the reasons he is working some on zone defense in practice. Am not saying they will both start as I agree with Gilesfan that the combo we may see more will be Kah/Stith but I expect to see Stith/Porter some as well.

Fields gets an offer from Wagner. I don't see him staying a walk on at ODU.

I don't see how it would hurt us to give him a ride now anyway. We have scholarships, if he played well he was going to get one next season anyway. It would be different if we had a line of other point guards ready to sign. I think Fields sounds like he has great potential.

Are we sure on how many we have?

Baker
Taylor
Pinkney
Haynes
Stith
Kah
Caver
Stith
Talley
Porter
Green
Carver

That would leave us with one? Are we thinking of giving Vassor a scholly?

No....don't expect this to ever happen.

Why fill it just to fill it? It would be nice to go into the year with an open scholarship. Would allow the coaches to go after a mid year guy if someone became available

RE: 2016 Old Dominion Basketball Recruiting Den - Gilesfan - 07-08-2016 11:16 PM

Oh, I probably wouldn't fill it. I was just responding to the poster saying we have schollies, we may only have 1.

RE: 2016 Old Dominion Basketball Recruiting Den - monarx - 07-09-2016 01:17 PM

The Stiths could walk on if needed. We don't have a lot of depth at point guard, Fields has an offer for a full ride. If the choices are give Fields a ride this year, or have him go to Wagner, I'd give him a ride. Obviously Im not JJ, but it makes perfect sense to me.

Why should the Stiths walk on? Just so Fields can have a scholarship? That doesn't even make sense

RE: 2016 Old Dominion Basketball Recruiting Den - Prideofalion - 07-09-2016 03:54 PM

It's really pretty simple.. If they are still only using 12 scholarships by the time school starts in the fall, I bet they give Fields that open spot. The Stiths are on scholarship.. They would only walk-on if they had to. That being said, We have one open spot.

RE: 2016 Old Dominion Basketball Recruiting Den - Gilesfan - 07-09-2016 04:27 PM

It seems to me it would be extremely unfair to ask the Stiths to walk on. Both of them have earned the right to get scholarships and why should we ask them to play 75k just to keep a guy from going to Wagner?

Why give Fields a scholarship this year? If there are any available transfers at midyear -that the coaches would want to pursue- they wouldn't have a scholarship.

Best case: pocket the scholarship & have the opportunity to bring in a guys midyear if the situation presents itself

RE: 2016 Old Dominion Basketball Recruiting Den - ODU BBALL - 07-09-2016 10:05 PM

He played a big part in Norcom winning back to back VHSL state basketball championships.

He scored 30 points in this years state championship game, including getting a steal and basket at the end to win the game.

He's the Virginian Pilot player of the year for the Hampton Roads area.

He won the player of the year award in the state for this past season.

Not that it matters for the discussion of whether or not to give a scholarship to Fields if one is available this season, but a noteworthy intangible is that we are actively recruiting one of his Norcom teammates - K. J. Davis. I would guess that having Fields on the team would likely help a great deal with that effort.

Bottom line, he gets my vote for a scholarship this season if one is either available now or becomes available before the season starts.

RE: 2016 Old Dominion Basketball Recruiting Den - Mr.BigBlue - 07-09-2016 10:48 PM

I don't agree....Caver and Pinkney are both better. If Fields wants a scholarship then he should go to Wagner. If not, he could earn one at ODU in the future if he does what he needs to do both on and off the court.

RE: 2016 Old Dominion Basketball Recruiting Den - paintedblue2 - 07-10-2016 12:20 AM

I really don't care if ODU decides to give Fields a scholarship his freshman year. I don't think an offer from Wagner will play into that decision if they do. The coaching staff and Fields did come to an agreement that he will be a preferred walk on this year, and have a scholarship the remaining three years.

I realize it's a non-binding agreement, but we're talking about Wagner College.

Wagner seems to offer a good education, but it doesn't look like a very good fit for Fields. I don't see him backing out of his agreement with us to play in Staten Island, where his friends and family would have a much tougher time seeing him play. He wants to play close to home, and to be a Monarch.

^^
Plus, Jeff Jones says on that audio posted that Fields reminds him of Harold Deane when he coached at UVA. I remember that guy, he was a player.
