Know Your Enemy: Bradley - MemphisCanes - 12-05-2014 11:15 AM

The Tigers, statistically, are at the lowest point that they've been offensively since the close of the 2010-2011 season (when we needed to win the conference championship to get an NCAA bid). We rank a putrid 141st in offensive efficiency (ranked 150th to close the season in 2011). The defense, despite looking lost sometimes and really struggling to force steals and get buckets in transition, is ranked 43rd.

The offense has looked so lackluster because of several things. First, turnovers: we're 341st in turnover rate (11th or so from last). It doesn't just rest at the feet of our point guards either. Goodwin, King, Powell, Crawford and Johnson are turning the ball over way too much (over 20%, or one out of 5 times they tough the ball), and only Pookie and Johnson are doing it while trying to set up their teammates.

Second, poor shooting from both inside and outside the arc. The team is shooting a miserable 29% from 3 (down from 36% before the SFA game), and only 46% from 2 (should be well over 50% with this team). It's my personal opinion that this team does not currently have and maybe will never have a dominant scorer who can create their own shot (ala Will Barton and Joe Jackson). We'll struggle in the half court whenever 3's are not falling, which is to say, whenever Avery Woodson's shots are not falling. Woodson accounts for 58% of our made 3 pointers so far. The player behind him, Markel Crawford, is shooting a tepid 4 of 12.

The offense is doing some things well, that being offensive rebounding (grabbing 34% of their misses) and getting to the freethrow line (shooting 4.4 FTs for every 10 FG attempts). Thanks for that can be aimed squarey at King, Shaq and Austin. However, we'll lose games to teams like SFA when we don't play to this strength. SFA outrebounded us 37-33 and made 11 FTs to our 9.

On defense, we're doing a good job of making opponents take contested shots. Our foes are shooting only 30% from 3 and 44% from 2 pt range. We're also blocking 19% of opposing shots, which is good enough for 4th in D1. Credit Austin (22nd out of all D1 players) and Shaq (196th) for that stat.

However, we're struggling to force steals (248th in d1), and that has been a problem all season. No steals means to transition baskets. No transition baskets means we have to work our half-court offense for every single FG.

Bradley (ranked 226th, 3-4) is not a quality team. Their offense is very bad (276th). They struggle with turnover as well, and they struggle to score from the floor due to the fact that they have no real post threat. The thing that makes them dangerous, however, is that they shoot the 3 ball. As a team they shoot it at 37% clip, and they have 3 players (Jones, Grier and Barnes) who are shooting .375 or better on at least 18 attempts.

On defense (145th), they cause turnovers and don't allow second chance points often. They're 91st in steals, with Warren Jones (6'3" 190 lb, Jr. SG) leading the team. They're foul happy, however, allowing opponents on average to shoot over 1 foul shot for every 2 FG attempts. This is another team that our big 3 (Nick, Austin and Shaq) can punish if we come out and act as the aggressor in the paint.

Warren Jones is the one to watch out for. Averaging 15.7 pts per game, he scored 33 in Bradley's last game against UTCC. He's 15 of 40 from behind the arc and is drawing 7 fouls per game (40 mins of play) against opposing teams. Markel will need to play whistle to whistle on this guy.

Second up is Austin Barnes (6'8" 215 lb Sr SF/PF). Not as much of a scoring threat as Jones, but he can step out and make an open 3 (8 of 18) if he's left alone. He's averaging 5.6 rebounds per outting, after missing the first 2 games of the season (UT-Arlington and Robert Morris, both losses). It's quite possible that he is a really important piece to this team, and him missing two games has really skewed this team's performance thus far. We could be facing a team that is not much worse than SFA tomorrow night. Having a scoring threat like Barnes at the 3 might limit the amount of PT that Nick can get at that position, unfortunately.

THEMES TO WATCH FOR:

- Basically the same as the SFA game. Can we force turnovers with our defense and get easy buckets in transition? Can we limit turnovers across the board on our part? Will our post players be the aggressors and be the more physical bunch? Most importantly, can we depend on our perimeter defense to close out on shooters?

I think we'll see more progress from Johnson and Pookie in this one (I hope that neither is glued to the bench after a bad turnover early). I wouldn't be surprised to see a starting lineup change for tomorrow. Probably Kedren starting, Markel at the 2 and Burrell at the 3. I hope we don't see any more Markel at the point. Things get hairy early, maybe with Bradley leading for a bit. We pull away at the half, and then let them claw back to within 5 with 10 to go. We gut it out and make free throws, and win 65-58.

Great stuff as usual Canes.

Can I add one thing though?

"The Bradley Braves are coached by, um, uh, well, whoever the hell it is, advantage Braves!"

That's about right. I really don't think we can lose to Bradley at home.

I hate to say it but after witnessing the second half of the SFA game in person as well as the CBU game I am not convinced any remaining game is a "don't think we can lose" at home game.

That's cute and all but let's move forward with confidence instead of dwelling on the past which is unchangeable...

I mean do what you want.
But to me (and that's just my opinion) it is counterproductive to sit and boohoo about what's happened.
How do we move forward from previous mistakes
that is what Coach is doing right now with our young men on this squad!

GO TIGERS

How could anyone possibly have any confidence at this point? Hope perhaps, but definitely not confidence.

Yea, And I didn't think it was any way humanly possible to lose to freaking CBU or SFA at home either. So, there You go.

Kedren's breakout game, folks.

Tigers by double digits.

Among the Notable Alumni for Bradley University Braves fans may remember Kirby Puckett with some bitterness. Also the Clippers play by play guy (boooooooo).

That is the question that all the king's horses and all the king's men cannot figure out.

People that KNOW bb cannot figure out wtf JP is doing on everything from game plan to recruiting to a system(?).

Agree. No game is a sure win - sad to say, it could be argued that most of our games are not even probable wins, unless we show drastic improvement.

Can anyone believe that we are to the point that we are now sweating games against SFA, Bradley & the like?
