Why exactly is it that ESPN is stockpiling so much content for ESPN3?

RE: And today's cord cutting news - Captain Bearcat - 12-03-2014 05:34 PM

Correct me if I'm wrong, but tv viewership has been trending down for some time now? The decline was nominal during the recession (due to unemployed people being bored). But overall I thought this was one of those societal trends that big-time CEOs were all "worried" about (along with such things like Millennials buying fewer luxury cars because cars are less important to them than they were to boomers)

RE: And today's cord cutting news - Wedge - 12-03-2014 05:53 PM

The trend is going to be people watching on their phones and tablets more, and sitting in their living room watching the big screen less.

Comcast and AT&T aren't worried, though. They'll be providing the high-speed LTE and/or wifi that we use to watch on our phones and tablets.

I don't know demand for large TV's still up there. I watch our games on the big screen via apple tv, I watch other games on iPad. I never watch Netflix on anything but the big screen. My wife counts as online viewer because she uses HBOGo on Apple TV because she hates Direct's on-demand interface.

Agreed, people will watch their HDTVs when they are home, but phones and tablets open up a lot of opportunities to watch when away from home that didn't exist before. Data speeds are fast enough now, and smartphone hardware is good enough, that I've watched chunks of live games on ESPN or PTN while waiting for my kids to be done with sports practice. Other people who have a few minutes to wait, who don't like sports, are probably watching Hulu or HBOGo while they're waiting.

I'll take three sheets, to the wind.

It makes sense.

I can't stand flipping between channels when I can have a game on my iPad and laptop. It's just too easy to keep up with everything.

If you are confused what the point was, it would be because Reading Is Fundamental, and you don't seem to have read the short post all the way through to the end: "Why exactly is it that ESPN is stockpiling so much content for ESPN3?"

This is why the MAC Presidents were happy to sign a deal that committed them to upgrade to ESPN3 production standards and put all of their BBall games on ESPN3 in the recent contract extension.

I know what you're getting at; just want to hear you finally just come out and say it. You must be a lawyer (or legally trained) because you are an expert at beating around the bush. 04-bow

Thanks to Apple TV, Roku, & Amazon Fire...those of us who feel weird about staring at a laptop or tablet can watch online from the comfort of their big screens.

RE: And today's cord cutting news - TStatebobcat - 12-04-2014 09:30 AM

Cable TV is on borrowed time. None of my kids (7,9,11) watch regular tv anymore. Its all netflix and/or youtube on their kindles/smart tvs. My friend's kids are all pretty much the same.

RE: And today's cord cutting news - gulfcoastgal - 12-04-2014 09:38 AM

We've always watched on the big screen through Xbox Live. It's where my kids go first and chat with friends while watching sports, Netflix, gaming... They've learned a lot about cricket from some of their friends "across the pond." With our busy schedules, they watch ESPN3 replays more often than catching a game in real time on network tv. It's been great for us as DVR space is at a premium. With eight of us in the house, a four hour sporting event would kick somebody's program, then there'd be drama...and well, I'd prefer to be the only drama queen in my own home.

who provides your wi-fi? is it still the cable company?

p.s. curious, not sarcastic.

RE: And today's cord cutting news - blunderbuss - 12-04-2014 10:12 AM

I purchased a Roku 3 a few months ago. Between the ISP, Magic Jack (for phone), Watch ESPN, Ballstreams, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime and an over the air antenna I'm saving about $50 / month compared to a comparable package "deal" from TWC (minus all the crap I don't want to waste my time flipping through).

When does mobile internet replace the need for cable wi-fi?

mobile phones are becoming larger and tablets and laptops are becoming one in the same. I'd bet most people sitting at home on their couch surf the internet more on their mobile phone or tablet then their laptop.... Its just as fast using their 4G LTE than wi-fi. Why pay for both?

At some point you could not buy internet from a cable company and just use the data you're already paying for from your cellular company. Over the next few years, cellular data will become more abundant and cheaper and replace cable internet. Mobile hot-spot in the house powered by T-Mobile would replace Comcast's landline internet coming into the house and just be part of your regular cell-phone bill. There's no need for Comcast or Time Warner.... Verizon Wireless and Verizon FIOS would become one.

In my neck of the woods we have two options either ATT (currently with them) or Time/Warner. College football is starting to be the only reason I keep the cable on. I just discovered google chrome and enjoyed watching the TxSt vs Georgia State game on my big screen tv. One of the few advantages for the Sunbelt is that all their games are on espn3, it used to suck watching in the computer but now there many options to send the signal to the tv. For 2015 I plan on having the bare minimum package to make sure I get espn3 which is all i need. Not exactly cord cutting, but I'll have only one receiver instead of three I have now and basic channel package to get the morning news for my wife (which is the only cable she watches) and college football for me. Savings will probably be at least $50-75/month.

I think that this is exactly what's going to happen, especially when later generations of wireless internet start popping up. Right now the system will quickly be overwhelmed.
