NMSU for CUSA - DxfanMiner - 12-02-2014 03:51 PM

I want this better than any other Sun Belt stuff...at least their basketball is good.

RE: NMSU for CUSA - freshtop - 12-02-2014 04:23 PM

I have respect for their BBall program, I don't think their football brings anything to the table, and they are really far west.

How much do we need them to bring football to the table? We are filling our bowl slots with bowl eligible teams. Basketball is more important right now because the conference is a dumpster fire. The only school I would add "for football" is NDSU and even they won a basketball tourney game last year. NDSU or a Missouri Valley team is my first choice followed by NMSU. Another Sun Belt team and I'll be pissed.

Only 40 miles west of UTEP...thats not that far outside of the current footprint.

But what if, say, UTEP and UNT move to the MWC?

UTEP isn't leaving CUSA. It'll have to be all Texas schools or nothing.

I hope for the WAC's sake, they have somebody potentially lined up as a NMSU replacement.

NMSU has tradition with UTEP and UNT.

Having a nice fit in the conference is important.

Why would they move the the MWC?

I didn't think most UTEP fans wanted NMSU. Heck, I would like to add them just for you guys, I feel like you guys could use someone in your neck of the woods.

Never thought about NDSU, but that is pretty dang far from our current footprint.

RE: NMSU for CUSA - Saint Greg - 12-03-2014 12:19 AM

I'm for NMSU if we need an all sports replacement for UAB. If we can keep UAB for non-football sports, I'd try to add UMass football only with a basketball scheduling agreement. We have more bowl eligible teams than we do bowl games. We can afford to have a poor football team for a few years. We really can't take on anymore poor basketball programs.

NDSU I've always thought would make a nice FB-Only school in the SBC, if they feel compelled to push to 12 members.

RE: NMSU for CUSA - Native Georgian - 12-03-2014 02:27 AM

So much crazy sh¡t has happened that I hesitate to make firm predictions. But I really, REALLY don't see any viable path for New Mexico State to join C-USA.

I could see UAB staying for Olympic sports, and a football-only being brought in (UMass would probably be best fit in that case). Or I can see UAB not-staying, and a new all-sports member being brought in to keep the # at 14. One of the Sun Belt teams would probably have the edge in that case. I would personally start with either Texas State or Georgia State if C-USA goes down that path.

Not trying to rub salt in the wounds but it's not like UAB football was much better than NMSU.

CUSA is bloated enough but if anything you guys need a western team and Texas State and NMSU are the best options in my opinion.

They're the same distance as UTEP. It would be a 2 for one trip out to El Paso for non-revenue & basketball trips. NMSU would make a lot of sense.

RE: NMSU for CUSA - blunderbuss - 12-03-2014 08:41 AM

I'd go with 3 additions and get to 16. Add UMass, NMSU and ULL. That adds one far west, one east and one roughly in the center of the conference. It adds 3 pretty good basketball programs too.

ULL is not a good basketball program. Their coach is in his 5th year and has 1 above .500 season. They're 2-3 right now.

Louisiana went to the NCAA Tourny last year and had the NCAA Defensive Player of the Year and #10 player picked in the NBA draft. UL is 2-3 thus far this year playing most of those games without its top player and preseason first team mid major all american 6'10" center who returns tonight. BTW, UL beat LA Tech last year and Tech had a pretty good team.
