I feel for these kids. Many won't get another chance to play football again and many of those kids used UAB as an opportunity to get a free education to better themselves. I'm sure some will get a chance to play elsewhere next year and beyond, but the majority of the team is likely f*cked, and that's a shame.

I didn't know who Paul Bryant, Jr. was before about this story (other than being able to figure out who Daddy was) but he sounds like total pond scum.

No, even if it's the FCS or D2 level, I'd imagine there's an opportunity for any that want it. Hopefully the university will honor the scholarships of any that choose to stay.

RE: UAB players - HeartOfDixie - 11-30-2014 08:34 PM

They should honour the player's scholarships.

One good thing is that all players can transfer and be immediately eligible.

Hopefully Memphis will get some of there best players....touche.

Its not just the football players, but all the Title IX players that will likely lose their scholarships too.

If there is any justice in the world, Alabama football will get the death penalty in the near future.

RE: UAB players - TrojanCampaign - 12-01-2014 07:26 AM

This is a classic example of over reacting. I feel for everyone affected by this and I have a friend in the band who transferred to UAB just for that.

But guys let's be realistic here. UAB will most like honor most of the scholarships for a year or two and they can transfer immediately regardless of what sport they play. There are six division one football schools within 1-4 hours in Alabama. Not to mention the hundred + other FBS schools out of state. And the crap load of division 2 schools.

If these guys do not land somewhere or finish school soon it's their own fault. I remember last year Alabama A&M was literally trying to give away scholarships in some of it's women's sports.

You don't know how many people would be overjoyed if they did!

Yea I was never anti-Alabama before even though I don't like Saban, but now I'd like to see Alabama bite the big one.

How many 5-star, 4-star and 3-star players did UAB have?

Wilkie...I would not be surprised if Coach McGee hasn't reached out to some of his former players that were overlooked...remember DeVante Parker was a "3*" Player coming out of HS and now the only WR in his Class according to NFL People is Amari Cooper...Now Parker is a Consensus Top 12 Overall NFL Pick...JJ Watt was a "2*" Player coming out of HS as well.

RE: UAB players - Chappy - 12-02-2014 01:32 PM

I think I read when Temple shut down all those programs that they were going to honor the scholarships still for players that didn't transfer away.... I can't imagine this situation being any different.

RE: UAB players - Love and Honor - 12-02-2014 01:38 PM

I would suppose that UAB would honor all their scholarships, although given how the BOT is phasing out UAB undergrad it seems like that won't be much of anything in a few years. Hopefully UAB's head coach gets a job somewhere else and his players can transfer in, that's the best I see coming out of this.

Louisville's OC McGee was previously at UAB. I look for Louisville to cherry pick the best of UAB players.

Do wonder if they have some good OLinemen or WR...07-coffee3

Akron's OL coach came from UAB, and coach Bowden and his staff have connections all over Alabama. Wouldn't be surprised if a few UAB players end up with the Zips.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/cusa/2014/12/02/uab-blazers-football-shutdown-program-dropped/19781387/

"I have met with impacted student-athletes and coaches, and will meet with others affected. It is my top priority to make this transition as easy as possible. We will honor scholarships for those who choose to stay at UAB beyond this season, and we will honor coaches' contracts. When a program is discontinued, per NCAA bylaws, players who decide to leave UAB to play elsewhere will not be required to sit out of competition the following season."

From the official release, bowling and rifle were also dropped.

RE: UAB players - dbackjon - 12-02-2014 04:48 PM

What is bad for the State of Alabama is that there were over 50 players from the state on the Roster. Takes away local opportunities.
