RE: Official Game Thread: UNC Asheville - shampoo - 11-20-2014 09:49 PM

I don't want to jump to conclusions, but I think the return of UNCA's leading scorer and point guard, Andrew Rowsey (roughly 20 ppt and 3 apg as a Freshman!) with 2 senior centers at 6'9 250 and 7' 235, a sophomore 6'9 250 pf, and a couple 6'6 235 forwards will give UNCA room to play offensively. Rowsey is fully on par with Rembert at 106 3's made in 32 games last year. It only takes one big down low and that kind of perimeter potential to put a hurt on the Bucs' defense and rebounding margin, continuing those imperfections. Not our toughest matchup, but surely a test of our ability to shake off the Valpo loss and defend all around. Would love to see Giplaye and Bates shut down those bigs, just not sure of the chances. I think this will be a very close game, unless Bartow runs the short bench and we feel like losing by 10+ gassed.

They only lost to Wake Forest by 11 and beat East Carolina so this will be a tough one.

RE: Official Game Thread: UNC Asheville - swvabucsfan - 11-21-2014 08:20 AM

Rowsey (a 5-10 175 white kid who was one of the 2 or 3 best freshmen shooters in the country last year) is off like a rocket again this year, averaging 24.7 on .450 from 3 in the first 3 games, which included Wake Forest (26 points and 6 steals!!) and a road win at East Carolina (28 points). But he's not just a 3 point shooter. He's got the full package of offensive and defensive moves.

So who's ready to play defense for the Bucs? Whoever it is had better be ready to fight through a forest of tall, sturdy trees setting screens for Rowsey.

I bet Rowsey's lickin' his chops at our non-existent perimeter defense. When we played Vanderbilt a few years ago Coach Stallings told his players "you'll never see as many open looks as you will tonight". I suspect Asheville's coach is saying the same thing.

Check out this kid's range and repertoire of offensive skills:

Really looking forward to the game. Don't want to leave disappointed by coaching failures. This is the test to see if that defense/rebounding focus is apparent whatsoever in strategy. My guess is we'll see complete recourse to offense - run and gun, one on one, and points allowed by the ton.

RE: Official Game Thread: UNC Asheville - RodShaw2 - 11-21-2014 12:20 PM

Hate I am going to miss this one, They are a big team with a great perimeter player, be a test to see what we have.

I'm officially scared and fearing the worst.

So I am going to predict the kid goes for at least 35 and 8 3pters. I also am afraid Riley will try and match him.

RE: Official Game Thread: UNC Asheville - shampoo - 11-21-2014 06:13 PM

Don't forget, he'll also go for 6-7 assists. But there's no worry of Riley trying to match that, too.

“ETSU is a talented club from top to bottom,” stated Bulldog coach Nick McDevitt. “We’ll need to play well for 40 minutes to have a chance at winning on Saturday night. ETSU has a great basketball tradition and it should be a great basketball environment when we play at Freedom Hall.”

Let the shoot out commence: http://www.johnsoncitypress.com/article/122265/etsus-riley-looks-to-extend-hot-start-against-asheville

I'm already nervous.

RE: Official Game Thread: UNC Asheville - shampoo - 11-22-2014 10:48 AM

Did anyone else catch the typo in the story?

“Now that I got my feet wet and I’m familiar with the program, I know my role with the offense so its easier to for me to pick my spots and know where I can get points...."

Riley actually said, "...I know my role IS the offense..."

That was a nice, vacuous comment from Asheville about our team quality. If they do what they should, they come away with another nice road win. Their team is killing it on rebounds and steals, too, not just offense. Without having to stretch their D (because coach knows how to recruit) they need to control the pace and wear the Bucs out, building a comfortable margin. The Bucs, on the other hand clearly have to lock down Rowsey and probably draw a big game from Giplaye and Bates both. Riley needs to do what he does and also get others involved on offense. He has a ton of heart, but not always the I.Q.

P.S. Please, for the love of the game, Bartow, no Wilson at 5 tonight.

RE: Official Game Thread: UNC Asheville - Bucfaithful - 11-22-2014 11:35 AM

This game is reminiscent of last year's game against Stephen F. Austin. Like UNCA, SFU fielded a complete squad with one of the most versatile players in the country (Parker?). I hope the outcome tonight matches last year's outcome.

We can win this damn game. We will score 80, but can we hold them to less than 80? This game will come down to defensive stops and rebounding.

Got sick kids at home otherwise I'd be there actin' a fool. I'll be there in spirit and watching the video feed at home.

Go Bucs.

I'll be there tonight unless something happens, but this game will most likely will be a high-scoring shootout. Hope we can win.

RE: Official Game Thread: UNC Asheville - squeak - 11-22-2014 03:48 PM

Is there a free wi-fi connection in Freedom Hall?

RE: Official Game Thread: UNC Asheville - RodShaw2 - 11-22-2014 06:54 PM

Moving the game to 7pm put it up against the UT Missouri game, I wonder if that is going to hurt attendance. Looks sparse on the feed.

RE: Official Game Thread: UNC Asheville - RodShaw2 - 11-22-2014 07:15 PM

I guess UNC-A couldn't make it so they got App St to fill in at the last minute? Somebody in charge of the graphics is really paying attention tonight. Sheesh.

RE: Official Game Thread: UNC Asheville - shampoo - 11-22-2014 07:56 PM

So far, very pleased with the team work. Exactly what we need, and it's producing.
