Did you think UAB wasn't in the bowl discussion? Just about every bowl analyst has UAB in a bowl game.

What I'm looking at is right now we have other C-USA schools about to be bowl eligable before us. So as long as we get to 6 we should be looked at before other 6-6 teams.

Why do you think a 6-6 UAB squad should be looked ahead of other 6-6 programs in CUSA? Not saying you shouldn't believe that but if you're presenting UAB's case to a bowl official as to why they should select the Blazers what would say?

With so much media the last couple of weeks and interest surrounding the team, I'm not sure they could turn us down. Bowls are about story lines just as much as they are about money (ok, money is greater, but work with me).

Talk about the story line of UAB vs Memphis in the Bham Bowl. We beat USM, I really believe that's where we go and who we play.

Pros
1. Up and coming head coach
2. Program's current situation could draw eyes to this bowl
3. Hawaii bowl may not draw fans, but a closer continental bowl may draw fans

Cons
1. UAB doesn't travel well
2. Name recognition ticket sell value
3. No bowl history to draw attention to this bowl

I see were you saw I wrote should. I wrote it as it should give us a chance to get a better look at us. I didn't write it as we should get it because we deserve it more.
Some what's your reason for or against us not being picked since you brought the discussion to the reasoning point?

So to be clear, the media is not going to factor into bowl officials' decisions on whether or not to invite a team. It's not about being turned down but being invited. And we all know the criteria that bowl committees look at when it comes to inviting a team.

Now if the Birmingham Bowl is available, UAB is eligible, and CUSA is needed to fill that slot then that would be a no-brainer in my opinion for UAB to be offered. If you're talking about the Bahamas or Hawaii, again no big deal because fans aren't going to necessarily be expected to travel to those games in large masses so a bowl eligible UAB would have a good chance.

If you're talking about any other bowl game, chances are other 6-6 bowl eligible programs in CUSA are going to be picked ahead of UAB.

Uab going to the Bham Bowl might be a good thing in certain ways.

I think it depends on the bowl. I could make a case for UAB for the Birmingham Bowl, Hawaii, or Bahamas based on the pros you listed. I know UAB fans would attend the Birmingham Bowl in large numbers. But the negative for UAB being in the Birmingham Bowl from a bowl committee perspective is that less money will be spent by people living in the city. But for possible bowls like the HOD, Indy, Armed, Boca, New Mexico, the cons you listed would probably prevent UAB from being invited.

A Bowl game is a bowl game...I get that, but, I won't be able to go to Hawai'i if UAB accepts a bid there, hoping for something within a 10 hour driving distance if/when they become bowl eligible.

RE: UAB still in the bowl discussion!!! - blazertke - 11-21-2014 10:08 AM

I'd love to see us in the Armed Forces bowl or Birmingham. I could make both of those, but I'd be content watching us play on ESPN on Christmas Eve.

Oh, I will watch, you betcha...I just want to be able to be there...I haven't been to Hawai'i since 1986...Man, I just keep imagining UAB at the New Orleans Bowl or the one in Shreveport...

For the players' sake, I hope it's not B'ham. No offense to our fine bowl, but these guys deserve a destination that's not their own stadium or city.

RE: UAB still in the bowl discussion!!! - the_blazerman - 11-21-2014 12:38 PM

If something publicly isn't resolved by then it would be another way where we could show that the city & fans support UAB.

Bham bowl would be the best bowl game by far. here's why:
crowd/fan purposes, would likely play an SEC team (huge opportunity), and bham bowl has the largest pay day of any bowl games that we are considered in. I think its a 1M payout vs a 500k payout at new orleans, etc. We could easily have 30k of our fans at this game.

RE: UAB still in the bowl discussion!!! - Matrix - 11-21-2014 01:49 PM

Damn. That FIU game is casting a bit of a "shadow"...I know we can't put the genie back in the bottle, but if UAB had TCB'd that one, we'd already be making travel plans.

RE: UAB still in the bowl discussion!!! - jcduncan13 - 11-21-2014 03:23 PM

Hell, I'd be fine with any bowl. If we get invite from Birmingham bowl take it.

RE: UAB still in the bowl discussion!!! - ElliotBreakingnewsBrindley - 11-21-2014 03:30 PM

The Birmingham Bowl would be the absolute best thing for UAB because it would give us a chance to play an SEC team in our home stadium, something that almost NEVER happens. It would also give us a chance to see what it's like to play a home game in front of a packed stadium.

Don't know about "packed",but to their credit, this bowl game draws pretty well, when Ole Miss and Pittsburgh played, it was close to 60K in there. I've been to 2 of those games, Rutgers - N.C. State, Cincinnati - Southern Miss, UConn - South Carolina...Great crowds for all of those, I can't help but imagine if the MPF had been constructed by now, how well this bowl would do...One season in the last 3, it was one of the 10 highest rated bowl for TV viewers...
