They need a tad over 28k...they are still a few thousand tickets short of the pro record.

I didn't know Syracuse had a hockey team.

It is the local minor league team...top farm club of Tampa.

They had previously set the AHL record playing the Binghamton Senators outdoors at the New York State Fairgrounds in 2010. Then it was crushed by Philadelphia's minor league club. So Syracuse is trying to get the highest US indoor total. You can get a seat for as little as $20 (Cheaper than many of their seats at their own rink) and youth groups and others are being offered tickets from companies as they've bought full blocks of tickets to giveaway to try and get SU basketball-like crowd. It'll be harder with them removing all the floor level basketball riser seats, but the Crunch owner is a gimmick man and will use every trick to try and get the new American indoor record.

You say that like it is a bad thing "gimmick man"...you need that in minor league sports. Tix are going from $20-50. Do you think anyone would want to pay more than $20 to sit 50 yards from the rink? Where did you hear that local companies are buying block seating to give away?

Why does Syracuse not have a college hockey team? Fan support, geography, Syracuse brand...all the components seem to be there.

It's one of the biggest :headscratch: questions on this forum. The only real answer is Title IX. Syracuse already has womens hockey so they have absolutely no way to offset the influx of mens scholarships. still doesn't explain where the F*** all those extra scholarships (as a perk of having womens only hockey) went.

Hey IceJus so where did you hear they were giving away blocks of tickets? Does this look like a fake crowd puffed up artificially with block tickets? I'm sure some youth teams received tickets...but it looks like they all came. BTW, the Ticketmaster price was tix in the rafters 70 yards away were going for $29 when I checked the other day. Someone fed you crap info.

The crowd was listed at 30,715 and is was legit. The owner was really smart to have Utica as the opponent as they traveled much better than Binghamton did.

Syracuse could realllllllllly benefit from changing to a fixed hard dome. Then you can hang proper sized jumbotrons in the proper locations for basketball and football and hockey.

GTS I agree...a rumor I heard from some folks (most who have good inside poop) is Syracuse is seriously looking at retrofitting the Dome with a retractable roof. I'm sure more suites and other amenity improvements would be made. Even if it reduces the Dome FB capacity down to the mid 40's it probably is a good call. I can't see anyone outside the most elite FB schools winning the long term battle of HD TV vs actually going.

RE: OT: Syracuse Trying To Set Indoor Hockey Attendance Record This Weekend - Wolfman - 11-24-2014 09:23 AM

According to Yahoo Sports they had "official" attendance of 30,715. Previous record was 28,138. This video shows the dome being pretty full but I don't know what 30k in the dome looks like.

It looks pretty legit to me. On the absolute low end there had to be at least 28-29k in there.

There is absolutely zero truth to that. The walls of the carrier dome are not structural walls. Those walls can not support anything heavier than a pressurized roof. The outside Dome wall that supports the roof is independent of the seating structure and the seating structure DOES NOT USE IT for structural support. The dome was built like your traditional outdoor stadium with a surrounding wall around it.

Syracuse spent 200k to study this. The study was how to build a support structure outside the existing Dome to support a fixed roof. That study produced no reliable options for how to build a hypothetical fixed dome at a reasonable cost. It's one of many options Cuse has looked at, but it was never under serious consideration nor is SU actively pursuing it right now. The 200k was well spent $$ to see if this idea was possible. and the conclusion is "not really"

John...I heard what you heard...but after the Mayor Minor fiasco Syracuse University is relooking at remodeling the Dome with a retractable roof. A solid hard roof is the other option. I heard this new info about 6 weeks ago.

Do the Carrier Dome people just sit around in the snow reading the Guinness Book of World Records?

Seems like you hear about them trying to set some sort of record all the time.

I heard we were supposedly out of compliance before we upgraded the women's team, and we are supposedly still slightly out of compliance with them.

Cheers,
Neil

that still begs the question. where the F*** are all those scholarships going? we don't have baseball or mens hockey for crying out loud. what sports are eating them all up?

When it comes to Title IX, "compliance" is a fluid term. What I do know is that Syracuse appears to be the only ACC school that offers more women's scholarships than men's. There is only one school in the league - Miami - which offers fewer men's scholarships than the Orange. Unless Syracuse has a truly extraordinary ratio of female to male students, I don't think Title IX is likely to be as much a problem as it is an excuse.

EDIT: I checked, and they don't. 55% female, 45% male isn't very unusual today.
