I, however, would like to see our gold helmets shine more. That matted finish just has no pop! But this is still not a well coached team. I believe we are getting better, but offensive talent has kept us afloat. I was encouraged by our second half defensive showing against Richmond, but that's about all the credit I can give to our coaches on defense this year. Also Withers has had about as many head scratching play calls this year as Matthews has in recent years. I believe credit should be given to Withers for good recruiting. But not good coaching. We'll see if that changes as more time goes on. Thanks to Bourne and Alger. Uh, no thanks. I was thinking to myself that someone is likely to make a run at Drew Mehringer after the job he has done with Vad and the passing game. The most valuable part of coaching (especially in college) happens before game day. RE: Thank You E-Mails & Texts to Alger, Bourne and Withers - JMUSteeler - 11-16-2014 08:19 PM HH&C would certainly know about the helmets, I was at the game and I thought they looked awesome live (though I didn't like the white pants as much). Then I watched on TV, and they looked awesome there too. Mosely's helmet peeled, because obviously he was knocking heads around. I'm certain they weren't cheap. And if you don't think kids take into account uniforms, I can promise you that you're wrong. I talked to 2 recruits that were taking their visits the weekend we got those helmets, and they both mentioned the excitement. One of those kids committed, and while obviously a helmet wasn't THE factor his overall experience included that excitement and was A factor. What other factors go into a decision over how well-coached we are, besides the obvious performance factors we witness on the field? Are we winning? - check Are we making halftime adjustments? - check Are we executing on offense EXACTLY like we promised we would? - check Are we executing on defense EXACTLY like we promised we would? - check Anyone that talked to Withers last spring and summer had to hear him say that our defense would be risk/reward, we would give up yards and sometimes points but we would get the ball back in the hands of a dynamic offense one way or another. And, they've adjusted our defensive approach to account for some early mistakes which has made us better. On top of all of that, they've made major strides in the football culture in less than one full season and it shows on and off the field. What else do you want? I went to all 3 games this weekend, both basketball games Friday and football Saturday, and I think Coach Brooks and Coach Withers have done a great job in their respective sports. But you have to admit those other two games were not 4 good quarters. Good adjustments in the second half, but we still had to play from behind. But you're right, I will give credit for making adjustments. Dude, we were 6 inches from beating Delaware and being on the verge of 10-2 (10-1 vs FCS), and probably ranked in or near the top ten. We're riding a six game winning streak, and I can promise you NOBODY wants to meet us in the playoffs right now. Are there still holes? Of course, Is our defense where it needs to be in order for us to contend for championships? Probably not. But can you at least let yourself enjoy what has been a surprisingly good first season for Withers and company? My question is where can we find another Vad for 2016? RE: Thank You E-Mails & Texts to Alger, Bourne and Withers - Hotrod829 - 11-16-2014 08:26 PM Good season, hopefully we get a good matchup in the playoffs to make a run. I'm not one to say thank you for a football season , but when I see them I'll say good job. I don't get the feeling that their are people not totally satisfied with Withers and his staff. Only thing I can say is that I expected a lot more plays to be made on defense , other than that the offense has been improving week by week. [/ I wouldn't say major strides , things are still the same in the JMU football world. I think word of mouth has spreaded some good " gossip" around. And our struggles in the first part of the season were do to sub par coaching. But if you read the other posts I have made on this thread, I give credit for the coaches making adjustments and getting better during this season. But your point about almost beating Delaware I could make about almost losing for more than one of our wins this season.... I'm excited as the next guy, but we still got issues that are concerning... 85 yds of penalties, snap issues, I'm scared everytime we try any kick (punt, kickoff, field goal), running game (abdullah must be on the dog house), need vad to tuck the ball after he takes off vs. one hand, d-line needs to find the balance bt all out pressure and run/gap/screen responsibilities... that's all! Fix some of those and go to Frisco! Of course, but you keep taking this helmet/uniform thing too literally. I've seen everyone try to explain it to you forever, and I know you're not stupid so I'm not going to try again and waste my breath. RE: Thank You E-Mails & Texts to Alger, Bourne and Withers - JMU_Rocks! - 11-16-2014 08:53 PM Back on point. After a big win and a long winning streak, it is a great idea to let the team, coaches, AD, and administrator know it. At 2 and 3, the coaches and team could have bought into the thought that it was a transitional rebuilding year. Not so. While it was certainly mentioned that it was a young team (right or wrong), it was also an inexperienced coaching staff. It sure looks like the coaches have grown into their roles too. It is important to use opportunities like this to make Bourne and Alger know that their fan base cares and wants athletics to be a strong component of the national engaged university they aspire to be. RE: Thank You E-Mails & Texts to Alger, Bourne and Withers - Hotrod829 - 11-16-2014 11:02 PM Great job by players , not easy getting a new coach with a different system and winning 8 games. JMU has had a winning for as long as i could remember , and it continues. Thank You E-Mails & Texts to Alger, Bourne and Withers - 84Breeze - 11-16-2014 11:26 PM Well done on the thank you emails! I can tell you that from the outside, JMU athletics has done a FANTASTIC job at marketing it as a huge change...and that's, well, probably the first time I have ever said JMU athletics has marketed something well. Between the suits, the grade improvement, the alumni coming to talk to the players, the halftime adjustments, no middle-school tantrums on the sidelines, the new uniforms, winning...from the outside it APPEARS that there has been a huge culture shift. And when it comes to bringing in extra dollars and putting butts in seats, that makes a HUGE difference. Winning will get most of that no matter what, but that extra little bit off the field helps make fans a little more loyal to the program and gives us something more to brag about. |
