Makes sense for him, makes sense for Rice. Won't be here forever, but will have to take Rice to next level before he leaves for another job, which is where we need to go.

To Bailiff: thanks for your work. Time to move along.

From Wiki:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Will_Muschamp

William Larry Muschamp (born August 3, 1971) is an American college football coach and former player. On November 16, 2014, after an overtime loss to former Florida coach Steve Spurrier's South Carolina Gamecocks, multiple media sources reported that Muschamp would not return to coach the Gators in 2015.

A native of Georgia, Muschamp attended the University of Georgia and played for the Georgia Bulldogs. Muschamp previously served as the defensive coordinator for the LSU Tigers, Auburn Tigers, and the Texas Longhorns. He also served as the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League (NFL).

Muschamp has gained a reputation both for his defenses and his demeanor during games and practice. In his second season at Auburn, Muschamp was a finalist for the 2007 Broyles Award for the most outstanding assistant coach in college football. Prior to accepting the job at Florida, the University of Texas had announced that Muschamp would eventually succeed Mack Brown as head coach of the Longhorns and designated him the "head coach in waiting."

from Yahoo news story:
http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaaf-dr-saturday/will-muschamp-will-not-coach-florida-in-2015-164518494.html

"Upon evaluation of our football program, we are not where the program needs to be and should be," Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley said in a statement. "I've always said that our goal at the University of Florida is to compete for championships on a regular basis. Coach Muschamp [a career winning coach on the highest level of college football competition (SEC, Big XII)] was dedicated to developing young men both on and off the field. Our student athletes showed tremendous growth socially and academically under his leadership. His players were involved in campus activities, engaged with the local community and represented the University of Florida with pride."

Perhaps we will name Muschamp "head coach in waiting" for once Bailiff's contract expires.

His salary was $3 million.

Muschamp is not the right guy for Rice. Kurt Roper might be, but Muschamp isn't.

Muschamp's Gators lost to Georgia Southern in his 3rd year as HC. Doesn't give me much confidence in being able to make miracles with much less at Rice.

College coaches fired for poor performance at the highest level are rarely successful at a lower level school.

I'd be fine bringing him in as DC, but I would absolutely mortified if we fired Bailiff for a guy like Muschamp. No reason for us to settle for a coach who hasn't proven anything when we have a coach right now that is at least keeping us bowl eligible.

I normally agree with this, but Muschamp has the reputation of a defensive expert and fielded consistent top 10 defenses at Florida. That's a model for success that I think is much more realistic for Rice, where the HC directly assumes control of one aspect of the team (and is the de facto DC or OC) and gets it to perform at a high level... compared to our current situation, where we pay a significant portion of our salary pool on a HC that is more of a CEO and face of the program, who leaves significant responsibility on both sides of the ball to bottom-dollar assistants.

Not that it will matter, since Bailiff isn't going anywhere, and Muschamp will make 2x as much as a DC in the P5 somewhere.

Emphasis added.

I don't know what he'll be doing next year -- I doubt it will be coaching at Rice -- but whoever employs him will not be paying him $3M.

I agree with this. There are exceptions -- I imagine Ohio has been fairly happy with Frank Solich. But then, Solich at Nebraska never lost to Georgia Southern en route to 4-8.

This is ADspeak, similar to coachspeak. In English, it means "The big money boosters who have my private cell phone number are unhappy".

So if one wants action, the path is clear:
1. Become a big money booster
2. Get JK's private number
3. Call early and often with threats to keep your money in your pocket

I imagine the step where most of us have a problem is #1.

I would have to think- YES.

It will be interesting to see where Roper ends up out of this. I would hope he signed a 2 year contract at the beginning of this year

What exactly did you expect JK to say in a public forum in front of his head football coach?

That we had been invited to the SEC and Saban was the new coach with Malzahn as the new OC and Muschamp as the DC.
Maybe then all would be perfect.
Oh I forgot, we sold 40,000 season tickets.

This is exactly why I find it hilarious when people get annoyed at Bailiff for saying coach speak type things during half time or post-game pressers.
