Dark-horse picks for major conferences - tigers1125 - 11-06-2014 01:49 PM

Seth Greenberg:

"You gotta' go with Memphis. They have a great home court and great sense of ownership and passion with their fans. Kedren Johnson, who will be eligible, gives them an experienced point guard. Shaq Goodwin and Austin Nichols are two of the toughest frontcourt matchups in the conference. Nick King also gives them a lockdown defender on the wing. I just think that Memphis and Cincinnati, when you talk about dark horses, are the two teams that have legitimate shots at shaking it up."

Shows how much these guys do their research. Coach P was just griping the other day about King crossing his feet on D. This is something taught to 7-8 yr olds in competitive basketball.

Really? I'm sure King can defend just fine and will have a breakout season.

But, we're not IN a "major conference"....

Come on, that's just not true. We have way to many players that don't have D1 stats and they don't have any D1 experience. King didn't even play much last season. We should be happy with keeping every game within 10-15 points. If our front court has a good game we can even upset some teams like Tulane. (Sarcasm)

From Commercial Appeal:

Much of the coaching staff’s focus with King throughout the offseason and this preseason has been on making him a better perimeter defender so he can effectively guard other small forwards. On Tuesday, the staff stopped a drill when King’s feet got crossed while he was sliding laterally. Though King has all the tools to be an elite small forward, it’s his effectiveness on defense that will ultimately decide whether he’ll start at the 3 or play more of a reserve power forward role as he did last season.

The way he rebounds, i.e., better than we've had in a while, PF is fine with me.

Love the kid but he was terrible guarding 3s last year. He does rebound his tail off though.

True but hopefully he's improved. His rebounding was a pleasant surprise and he plays hard.

Tried to explain this to so many people last season.

Coaches here don't wanna hear 'bout no coaching. All they got is *s in their eyes.

RE: Dark-horse picks for major conferences - cmt - 11-06-2014 09:10 PM

I agree with Seth, even about the defense. I can not believe I am the optimist and not the realist this year.

I truly believe our guards last year and the year before and the year before and the year before held us back, and although we haven't seen these guards play, we do know they aren't those guards. Don't misunderstand me, I loved Joe and Chris and Geron and even MDJr, but they just weren't that great. I know these guards are, at least, "not that great" and I feel like a couple of them are already as good/better as we had last year. Who knows, one might even be a star.

I love Nick, but who have you ever seen him "lock down" on defense.

Who has Memphis had in JP's tenure that has played Defense? I can't think of anybody.. I'm not blaming it on Pastner but we haven't played good D in a long time.. I do question our defensive philosophy especially when we guard people 35 ft from the basket and they blow by our defender 90% of the time which in turn keeps our bigs in foul trouble having to help out.. I hope that changes this year!!

When they start showing the top 10 defensive plays on Sports Center every night maybe things will change.

RE: Dark-horse picks for major conferences - Trapper John - 11-07-2014 02:30 AM

I really like a front court of Shaq, Austin, and King. Maybe Nick can't guard the 3, but show me a 3 that can shut down Nick. He can spread the floor a little with his jump shot, and he can mix it up inside and get rebounds and put-backs. For an offense that will rely on its 4 and 5, that seems like the perfect 3 for our team.

Dj was an excellent defender. It's why he was so available to rotate over and block shots, cause his man wasn't open to get the ball. Add 4 inches and 25 pounds and he would be in the nba.

Add 10 inches and minus 25 lbs and I might be UN the nba too

One thing this team should be is TOUGHER, physically and mentally. That I look forward to.

I definitely agree about opponents blowing by our guards and driving freely to the hole. But, there were other times that geron would ABSOLUTELY lock down his opponent. And even the other three Gs would have moments/ games where they played really good D.
The inconsistency was frustrating.

DJ was excellent at blocking shots and helping...Any big who had a lick of basketball sense could score on DJ at will...He was just too small
