Conference Records Since Last Year - ThreeifbyLightning - 10-31-2014 11:16 AM

In looking at the conference records of the newly reconfigured C-USA covering this year and last is there anything that stands out or is surprising to you?

Marshall 11-1
Rice 9-2
Middle Tenn 10-3
La Tech 7-5
UTSA 7-5
FAU 6-6
North Texas 6-6
UTEP 3-8
FIU 3-9
UAB 3-9
USM 2-10
WKU* 1-3
ODU* 1-4

*Obviously not part of the league last year

RE: Conference Records Since Last Year - T_Won1 - 10-31-2014 11:31 AM

USM at 2-10 is still shocking to see.

RE: Conference Records Since Last Year - pilot172000 - 10-31-2014 11:45 AM

5 of the upper half are recently added teams.

RE: Conference Records Since Last Year - MinerInWisconsin - 10-31-2014 01:15 PM

UTEP isn't last! Onward and upward!

RE: Conference Records Since Last Year - Ole Blue - 10-31-2014 01:16 PM

Nice to see MT making waves quickly. Now to finish the year as strong as we did last year (plus a bowl win this time)!

RE: Conference Records Since Last Year - BeliefBlazer - 10-31-2014 01:18 PM

Marshall and Rice look much better against Sun Belt teams than USM and UAB. 03-wink

Most of us no longer feel that spike of pain when seeing stats that pre-2012 would seem so startling. It's just commonplace at this point.

It won't be long. USM is on their way back! I really think you will be contending for the championship next year. CUSA needs a strong USM.

Doesn't that make sense given that 8 of the 13 teams are new?

What it shows me is that CUSA was a lot better than the Belt. Even though we brought over the top Belt teams, the top two are still CUSA holdovers. And the top of the AAC are former CUSA teams.

Don't take this the wrong way, I'm fine with the current CUSA for the most part, but for football this is the conference I would want to be in:

Marshall
ECU
UCF
Cincinnati
Memphis
Middle
USM
USF
UAB
Navy
UConn
ODU

other than Memphis I don't care about joining back up with any AAC schools as far as football goes.

Don't get me wrong but the last time you were with these teams you were a below 500 conference team from 2006 - 2012 in a small market.

RE: Conference Records Since Last Year - banker - 10-31-2014 08:13 PM

Yeah, but you have to understand that we went through a period of time with a bad coach and horrible AD. Coach Pruett left after the 2004 season and we came in to CUSA with Mark Snyder, the DC who is currently ruining A&M's chance to be a decent football team. He finally got ran out after 2009 and Doc has built the talent back up.

When we were in the MAC we played 5 bowls against CUSA teams, Louisville twice, Cincinnati twice and ECU once. We went 4-1 in those games. We are back to what we are suppose to be.

No, it wasn't. The teams that came over from the SunBelt to the C-USA were all over the spectrum. MTSU and UNT were among the cream of the crop. FAU and FIU both went 3-9 their last season in the SunBelt.

Additionally, check the head-to-head records between the conferences in 2011-2012. SunBelt was kicking C-USA's ass.

RE: Conference Records Since Last Year - banker - 10-31-2014 08:32 PM

How many of those Belt wins were against Marshall, Rice, ECU, UCF, Houston or Tulsa?

Arizona
Arizona State
Colorado
Kansas
Kansas State
Stanford
UTEP

Miner, I wasn't trying to be outlandish. I still believe that CUSA management totally blew it in realignment and a bunch of ADs and Presidents weren't too smart either.

If CUSA had just stayed together Cincinnati, Uconn, USF and, at the time, Louisville had no where to go, no teams to add, and were doomed to becoming independents. At that point we extend invites to those 4 for all sports and become a 16 team league. Split into an east and west division and that's a heck of a good conference. That conference would have had more value than either the AAC or CUSA.

Is this the same argument that AAC is making against us? I know when FAU went 0-8 in SunBelt (and 1-11 overall) in 2011, our only victory was against UAB. In 2010 we beat UAB, as well. In 2007-2009, we went 2-2 against the C-USA, including beating Memphis in a bowl game in 2007
