Former Tiger Football Player Jake Linville - 24fanatics - 10-20-2014 07:59 AM

I am sad to report that former Tiger football player Jake Linville passed away yesterday. He played from 1990-94. He played defense and special teams. He was my roommate our Freshman year and was a great guy. So tragic and heartbreaking. Here is a link to the news story:

That is a sad story all around. My prayers for comfort for his family, friends...and football team.
Everyone is in a state of shock because whatever pain he was carrying around inside him was masked to the point no one could see it.
Sorry for your loss as well 24...I know he has been a longtime friend.

Suicide - a permanent solution to a temporary problem. So sad

He was my football coach at covington and was such an amazing person. RIP Coach

Heard this on the news here last night. What a terrible tragedy and a reminder to us all to "check in" frequently with those we know and love. Folks can get quite good at hiding the stuff in their lives that bother them the most. It's OK to pry a bit.

My goodness I can not believe this.

I was a student manager from 89-94, and I can not think of a more quality person that came through the program in those years than Jake.

He was quality through and through, and I am just in shock.

Yup, that whole depression thing is super easy to get rid of. Just try a little and the "problem" is solved in no time at all.

Is it the best way to deal with what's going on? No, but it's incredible how much some people over-simplify suicide.

Mental illness / depression is so undervalued and misunderstood in our society. It's "taboo" and often swept under the rug. I'd rather wear pink ribbons and such to address those issues as well as suicide much more than some other issues that are so popular as causes today. The Commercial Appeal has a policy of not reporting on or releasing names of suicide victims. Why not?

Remember the lady who died after jumping off the Peabody roof? The CA didn't have any follow up on who that was, her story, etc. I guess they and others don't want to publicize it because it might encourage others. BS, by not addressing it, you don't meet it head on in an effort to stop it from happening. Not picking on the local rag, there are many other outlets who are similar.

I could be completely wrong but I could swear he was a teacher assistant (or whatever you call them) when I was at Gtown.

Coach Linville was a big plus for Covington football. I am so sorry to hear this and my prayers go out for his family.

Just to be clear, we have been hearing that it was an accidental gunshot. Not verified 100%, but it is looking like it was. I would be completely shocked if it was an actual "suicide", but you never know what is going on in someone's life. Jake was a good father, husband, coach and teammate. God bless.

Thanks for this post Bert.

Jake was the greatest without a doubt. I am just sick over this.

Terry and Nick Saban also sent a flower arrangement. Not sure if Memphis did. Didn't see one but I wasn't looking for one either.
