Game Week: Buffalo - emu steve - 10-06-2014 12:27 PM

Vegas line opened at Buffalo by 11 and now 12 1/2.

I assume Roback will not play this week (I haven't seen the game notes yet).

When Roback returns to play our offense should improve.

Dear Friends,
I think with this team, Eastern can compete. Only time will tell of course, but we will finally be playing at home, and Buffalo has not exactly proved to be an exceptional team so far.
Now I also know that I will be attacked for saying what I have, for being naive, stupid, uninformed, whatever.
I will be at the game, so will see if there has been any improvement from the last few weeks.

RE: Game Week: Buffalo - Bob Wickersham - 10-06-2014 05:53 PM

Buffalo has a good, experienced.QB. That doesn't bode well for a secondary that is...playing poorly.

Dress warm it's going to be a bit cool.

I see this as a competitive game.

UB is the 2nd or 3rd weakest team we've played (they are probably comparable to ODU, better than Morgan State but not as good as Akron).

Steve, I think you are selling Buffalo short. They had Bowling Green beat. Now ask yourself, how would we have done against BGSU? I think Buffalo wins convincingly, 42-14.

RE: Game Week: Buffalo - Ken Barna - 10-06-2014 08:01 PM

Dear Bob,
I think Bowling Green is/has been overrated this year. Their defense is especially porous, and that's why all of their games have been shoot outs.
On the other hand, although Buffalo has their quarterback returning this year, they lost some key individuals on defense.
If Eastern can mount any kind of offense this could be another shoot out.

RE: Game Week: Buffalo - EagleSam - 10-06-2014 08:45 PM

Our defense played well enough to win against Akron, at least in the first half. When your offense can't sustain drives, your defense will eventually wear down. The secondary didn't play very well, but you can only ask so much from a defense against a decent team.

If our offense plays as poorly as it did against Akron, then buffalo will eventually wear down our defense too. It's a shame too, because this is the best that our defense has looked since 2011, although that isn't saying much. We have some very talented kids up front.

RE: Game Week: Buffalo - Bob Wickersham - 10-06-2014 09:26 PM

I think Akron was overconfident and kinda sleepwalking. They definitely were not up for us yet they won by 25 and could have scored again but Bowden was being kind.

Pohl had all day to throw too, so let's not get carried away with our DL. O'Conner is a player though.

Pretty baseless assessment, but you're clearly on a crusade. The defense did fine until they were on the field longer than they should've been. Not gonna have a successful defense if you can't sustain drives on offense (and when your offense turns the ball over 4 times). It's not surprising that we eventually crumbled on that side of the ball.

Good analysis Sam. I too have seen flashes of improvement in the defense this year with the exception of the secondary. I think the LB play has improved even without Spearman. Yes O Conner has stood out but I think Zappone may be the most improved player this year and even Lisner looks improved. I like to see what this defensive player does if he can bring in the players to fit his defense.

You're sure that Roback will play when he's healthy? I'm not. Bell according to staff is the QB of the "future". I'm not saying I agree with their assessment.

David Goricki has a weekly column on MI MAC FB:

Nice way to keep up with CMU and WMU as well as some thoughts on this week's games.

RE: Game Week: Buffalo - emu79 - 10-09-2014 12:22 PM

Apparently the Echo is reporting that Austin Barnes is out for the season due to a medical condition. That means we'll have a new holder for kicks. Dubiel (sp) should be able to step in and handle the punting. Hoping Austin has a quick recovery.

RE: Game Week: Buffalo - FrankAnderson - 10-09-2014 12:44 PM

Dubiel has done pretty well thus far. Obviously I hope Barnes is back on the field and performing well ASAP, but maybe a new holder for place kicks will be a good thing. We've seen some problems there this season.

RE: Game Week: Buffalo - ncchip - 10-10-2014 10:11 AM

I think you might be catching Buffalo at the right time. They lost by a point last week when BGSU scored a touchdown in the last 2-3 minutes of the game. Had to be pretty devastating to them to lose the close game to the MAC East division favorite.

Nice article on EMU helmets.

I believe Ken says we are going gray helmet tomorrow...
