Fix for problem with Coleman/Costco tailgate canopy - HuskieFootball Addict - 10-03-2014 03:28 PM

I don't know how many of you bought the NIU tailgate canopy at Costco this summer but the one we bought had a problem. thnxjoenovak also had this problem with his canopy.
I found this to be quite disappointing because I expected more quality from Coleman.

The leg locking apparatus on 2 of the legs would not lock into place on the highest setting. It was because the button inside the leg was a little off & was not lining up with the hole. My husband fixed ours by removing the leg locking apparatus (there are small screws on it to get it off) and drilling out the hole so it is now larger & the silver button will now click into the hole. He said it was not a difficult or time consuming job to fix it.

For us, this was a much easier thing to do than jack around with trying to get Coleman to replace the frame. And there was also no guarantee that a different frame would not have the same problem now or even down the road.

Thanks. Just thought others may encounter the same problem & would like to know it is easily remedied. :-)

I haven't set mine up yet, but at least I won't be upset if this happens to me.

Duct tape
Bungee Cords
a tarp
zip ties

All are required tailgating supplies....just in case.

Thanks a ton HFAddict... Much appreciated. Feel like that's something I can do and not violate the warranty. Still thinking I might push Coleman on this, but can't be down a tent during the stretch of home games.

Thanks, for the help. I haven't used the canopy yet, but I know what to do know if it fails.

slightly off topic, but how do you all "secure" your canopy to the ground if you are in the convo lot (blacktop)?
thanks!

We moved over into grass lot behind student section this year from Lot K (blacktop) last year.... Pick up a couple inexpensive sand bags from Lowes, put a leg of heavy tables (liquor table/ cooler) on post corners, or the world's worst idea =have one-two designated people stand on 1-2 of the tent legs at all times
Good luck! 04-cheers

They make specific weights to fit over the legs. Found some at dicks down here

I have some leg weights that are 10 lbs each. they look like lifting weights because they are round but they have a slot out of them so they fit over the leg at the bottom of the leg. I have 2 sets so 20 pounds per leg.

Also can use your coolers at the corners & tie the leg to the cooler. There also weights that look like boat bumpers...they are filled with sand & you hang them from the legs.

Here is a tutorial for how to make your own canopy weights. It is from a site for craft show vendors but I think it's got some good ideas here.

bossman, Since our conversation at Homecoming, I found out that the problem my husband fixed was not the same problem you had (and me too) with the upper part of the leg not locking into place. (he fixed 2 of the lower legs ) We set up the canopy on Sunday so he could take a look. The problem is that the silver button is turned inside the hole & will not stay lined up so it can release & relock into place. He used a small screwdriver to move it where it should be inside the hole but after clicking into place one time to raise the height of the leg then releasing the leg it is out of whack again. He says it can be fixed by replacing that leg.

I used facebook to contact Coleman & also to notify Costco of the leg problem. Costco initially responded by saying I could return the product. I told them I did not want to return it I just want to fix the problem & that many many of us were very happy to find NIU canopies and want to be able to buy them. We want Coleman to fix the quality problem & we want Costco to continue having the canopies available.

Now Coleman tells me (via email) that it is a licensed product & basically therefore not their problem. I need to contact Rawlings. Here is a copy of the email sent to me from Coleman Cust, service. I intend to cc Costco when I reply in the hopes that Costco can pressure Coleman to make this right without passing me off to another company.

Thank you for allowing us to be of service to you.

I will keep my fingers crossed & let you all know what happened. If you need a leg replaced, NOW might be the time to do it. Don't wait until next year when it is out of warranty - assuming it has a 1 yr. warranty.

I need some help from the Dog Pound. (HuskieJohn?)

Any of you who bought the NIU canopy at Costco... do you still have your receipt? I can't find our receipt. If anyone has their receipt, can you give me the item number & the cost of the canopy? I need this info so Costco can look up the purchase so I can get some warranty help. Thanks.
