More budget shortfalls - mjs - 09-29-2014 11:15 AM

Email from Dr. Anderson;

Everyone on campus is aware that we have an enrollment decline again this fall. Our total enrollment is 11,681, which amounts to a decline of 5.6 percent from the 12,377 figure last fall. This will mean a shortfall in tuition and fee revenue of approximately $5 million for the year. Therefore, we are taking action to reduce the budget in order to bring expenditures in line with income.

Lost student athletic fees 696 students X 30 hours X $17.25 per hour= $360,180

That money will have to come from somewhere. Either need more revenue or more cuts to our athletic budget.

I talked to a couple of the Volleyball Players Today. They just made their victory trip to Atlanta, Ga. and Boone, NC and back this weekend on the Bus. That is a Long trip but I guess the cost for them to fly was prohibitive with our budget. The fact they won both games after that long trip shows me these ladies have a special team this year.

After Friday Nights game at home this weekend they have to hit the road by bus again to Statesboro, GA for a noon game on Sunday.

These ladies are true Trojan Warriors.

I have no idea how much Trojans would be paid for the so-called "Money Games". Maybe others here would know that. Seems to me this would have been a good year to have about 3 such games. For programs like UALR I believe such games are good for 2 reasons. The much needed money and the opportunity for the players to have the chance to play against the best.

I am with you there. I don't really like them, but this would have been the year to have had several of them.

I think we could make 75 to 100K on a money game. I believe low majors like UAPB regularly get 75K.

The one big mistake Anderson did was initiate that freshman stay on campus rule. I'm glad he wised up and switch it. Ualr enrollment was heading up until that decision. Anderson has accomplished some great things during his tenure but it may be time for Anderson to retire and bring a new chancellor in to bring some new ideas to stop the enrollment decline. I think this is 2 falls in a row where we had decline.

Yes Alum, that was a big mistake, the other big mistake he made was sleeping while the athletic department burned. He either didn't care if the athletic department was a winner, just as long as they could pay the bills and nothing hit the newspapers, or he wasn't paying attention to that part of his job.

I don't begrudge him trying to make UALR a more "traditional" campus. Lot of upside in that. It was a mistake, but hindsight is 20/20.

I don't begrudge him for doing that either, but sometimes you go too far. Most colleges I'm aware of allow students to live anywhere they want, so you're sometimes cutting your nose off to spite your face so to speak. That's southern talk Mickey. I think people are getting tired of government and institutions trying to mandate every facet of their lives. Hell, you're paying for the college tuition, you should be able to live where you want. If you're getting a scholarship from the school, then they might be able to tell you where you can or can't live.

Just looked quickly on the internet and saw that many colleges require freshman to live on campus. Studies prove that this improves retention rates, performance in classes, etc. Still it was probably not a good move at a campus that is known for being a commuter school.

The top draw for many local students at UALR when I attended it was that you did not have to live on campus. Many parents and students liked the fact they could save money by living with their parents since they did not have to pay for room and board. Once you take that away, you might as well go to UCA, Arkansas Tech, UAF, etc. since it doesn't make sense to pay room and board and your parents probably lived a few minutes away. If you look at most metropolitan public universities they do not require freshman to stay on campus because they know that is a selling point for students and parents that want to save money.

RE: More budget shortfalls - MICHAELSPAPPY - 09-30-2014 06:00 PM

If you have a campus in a large metro area, it makes no sense at all to force students to live on campus. College costs these days are PROHIBITIVE at best, and if the student can cut down on costs by living at home, why wouldn't he do that? At least give him the option. Like was mentioned above, if you take away that option, then the student has every reason to look elsewhere.

We did, they did, and we undid it. Hopefully, enrollment will start growing again, but there may be other factors at play we don't know about.

If UALR was making us live on campus back in 1989, I'd be a Razorback. Living at home and working part-time was mainly why I ended up going to UALR in the first place. WPS. (cough)
