Doug Lesmerises wrote a great article on terrible pass interference call that swung the game. Some one please put the link up. I can't seem to make it happen

It did swing the game. But penalties happen and you habe to be prepared for the refs to change the game. Our defense is the bigger concern going forward, at least that can be fixed by our coaching staff (hopefully)

UC gave up 700 yards of offense. That play would not have saved the cats.

This. Even if you give us the penalty and assume we drive in to score afterwards the game would have been 50-35 instead of 50-28.

Everyone's right, it was not the officials, but couple this call with the blown illegal lineman down field and the game further tightens. I reviewed the play several times and no lineman is 3 yards down field.

It definitely was a major swing in the game, but bad calls happen and you have to overcome them.

Do you have a screenshot you can post?

I thought we had multiple lineman at 4-5 yards. Regardless, I didn't like the call. The lineman at that point were not involved in the play. And it's certainly curious that the call was made AFTER the TD and without a flag.

The bad call on Holton was huge no ifs and or buts. First off had apple not held him that's 6 points and potentially a tie game at 36. Even the 15 yards UC should have got would have allowed UC to keep pressure on with a 1st and 10.

Who knows how OSU would have reacted had UC tied it. After UC got within 5 OSU could only muster a field goal. Pressure can do funny things even.

That said as bad as UC defense was it likely wouldn't have changed a thing.

Flea that's a good point. But taking a 15 yard penalty is hard to overcome. Really sets offense off schedule.

The two big calls really swing momentum. If UC gets that Evans TD, it could have been 30-28 at halftime. Then on the horrible pass interference, that really swing the game. Our defense had stepped up some and held them to FGs. We go down and score, and it may be a tie game. Suddenly O$U starts to feel a little more pressure and UC is even more jacked up. Maybe the defense finds a new source of energy and holds O$U to another FG. We go down and score a TD and are up and suddenly O$U is really pressing and starts forcing the issue. Funny things happen when momentum is on your side and suddenly the heavy favorite is in trouble. Maybe nothing changes, but you see it time and again at O$U and many of the other big time home venues, a couple really crucial calls are blown or missed and momentum swings the wrong way. Suddenly the underdog feels like they are playing against a good team, a rowdy crowd and the officials and let up a little.

I tried to find one after the game and gave up. The guy they called it on was 4-5 yards past the line. They could have called it on a couple other guys that were even further than he was. They showed it on the replay and mentioned it, so if you can find video of that you're set. Officials will give lineman the benefit of the doubt when it's close, but not when they go several yards further than they're allowed to. That's the type of play officials typically confer on a la intentional grounding because you're dealing with multiple issues at the same time.

And yeah, the PI call was crap.

Edit: This is starting to remind me of soccer fans whining that their guy was barely offside and the refs should have let it go.

Posted on BCJ. The line of scrimmage was their 44. This would never get called.

Totally agree. So add 14 points and the game would have been really tight. Remember the IL TD that we were screwed out of that was about to change the MO in that game? Perhaps the B1? officials get a buzzer notice "Stop the Mo".

The way the penalty was called bothers me even more. Because it was never called. There was no flag, they just called a penalty way after the play. We had already celebrated for God's sake. It was an obvious homer call. The later OPI call was even worse.

I know we lost due to terrible D. But that doesn't make those calls OK. And they weren't mistakes. They were intentional.

RE: Check out the Cleveland. plain Dealer article on the pass. Interference call - FLIP - 09-29-2014 07:58 AM

Actually, the tone of the officiating was set on UC's first TD - there should have been PI on the first TD, the DB never played the ball and face guarded Moore terribly. There should've been a flag, yet there wasn't. I believe the week leading up to the game with all of the talk about how OSU changed their passing defense, letting on that they will play physical and pressure the receivers led directly to the way the refs called the game - OSU led on that the gameplan was to grab, hold, do anything to slow down or disrupt UC's passing game. The officiating crew bought it hook, line, and sinker.

Granted, I believe UC would've still lost, but having 2-3 obvious blown calls in critical situations is hard to overcome. My question is will the Big Ten, AGAIN, send their customary letter of apology? And how many of these letters does UC have in their files? IMO, that's ammunition to get at a minimum of a split crew for the next game.

Honestly, for non conference games, the officiating crews should always be neutral - that would stop this garbage of protecting certain teams/leagues.

Officials in college football should not be affiliated with a conference. The current system in college football creates a conflict a interest between conference affiliated officials and the monetary benefits a conference receives when their team wins enough games to participate in the College Football Playoff and New Year's Six Bowls.

In my view this is just another example of the real issue in college athletics, fairness and competitive balance. Forget student and athlete rights that is a minor issue compared to a system that is rigged so heavily in favor of a few schools.

The creation of a playoff with automatic bids for every conference champion plus the elimination of conference affiliated officials would be a huge step in the right direction. If college basketball can do this so can college football.

All scoring plays and change of possession plays are automatically reviewed. Even if the refs hadn't called it, the review booth would have likely overturned this play. I'm more frustrated with the bad luck than the refs on this play. Certainly a blown opportunity for UC.

I thought both calls were crap, but I don't think they impacted the result.

The calls might have made the game "tight", but I think we all know the Buckeyes offense was scoring as many as they needed to Saturday. I honestly think if some of these things HAD gone our offenses way and we scored 50, they would have been in the 60s. OSU could have scored more if they wanted to or needed it.

This is why those calls don't bother me as much as they otherwise would (though it would have been nice to see what happened if UC tied it or got within 2 as they were very close to doing). When you give up 700+ yards of offense it is hard to feel cheated.

RE: Check out the Cleveland. plain Dealer article on the pass. Interference call - bearcatdp - 09-29-2014 08:29 AM

Other than WR and QB, OSU was more talented than UC, but UC was playing with them up until that Offensive Pass Interference penalty. That play seemed to take the wind out of UC's sails. When the underdog is playing with the favorite despite the talent deficit, bad calls can affect the outcome of the game. I'm not blaming the loss on the refs (UC gave up 700 yards of offense) but I am saying it could have been a different game if those 2 calls had gone the other way. We were already playing the #22 team in the nation with a ton of talent in front of 108,000 fans. The least the refs could do is call an even game and let the chips fall where they may. I don't feel we got screwed out of a win but I am disappointed that I can point to those 2 calls as being pretty iffy calls that went against the Bearcats. I just hope they are awake for Memphis.
