Week 5/Game #4: Kent State @ Virginia - GoFlashes7 - 09-23-2014 11:02 AM

Kent State travels to Charlottesville VA this Saturday to take on the Cavaliers of Virginia. Per a lot of reports, Virginia has 3-4 starters who will play in the NFL shortly.

**Here is the link to the game notes for this week:
http://kentstatesports.com/documents/2014/9/23/Virginia_notes.pdf

KSU will be without 6 starters this week @ Virginia: RT - Terrell Johnson, NT - Chris Fairchild, OLB - Devante Strickland, C - Jason Bitsko, RB - Trayion Durham, CB - Najee Murray. Murray & Johnson will be back next weekend @ Northern Illinois.

**Dave/anyone else,

Johnson has been out with an ankle and Murray is out with a concussion from the Ohio St game, but I haven't seen or heard an update on Chris Fairchild, Anthony Pruitt, Trayion Durham, & Devante Strickland. Are Fairchild, Pruitt, & Strickland hurt, suspended, redshirting, or getting outplayed by the younger players? Is Durham definitely redshirting or is his rehab going better than expected?

Eldin Anu has moved onto the depth chart @ WR behind Humphrey and Kris White is now the starter with Brooks/Chandler behind him. Puthoff is now the starter @ RG with Scott moving back to LG. Waugh is starting over Vance @ the LEO position. Monday is starting in place of Murray @ 1 of the 2 CBs position.

I am really interested to see if KSU is able to cover the RBs/TEs in the flat/screen passes, as OSU exploited them time after time 2 weekends ago. Also interested to see what type of pass rush they can generate. Last, Reardon needs to step it up from an accuracy perspective, as he missed a lot of easy throws the 1st 3 games.

Anybody making the trip to Charlottesville VA this weekend or DeKalb IL next weekend?

How many yards did Durham have last year?? I think there is more to his story then what people know. Not sure why everyone thinks he would be the saving grace for the running game. I don't recall him being to productive last season.

I think Haynes is working for the future but would also like to win now. Some of the problem has to be the Offensive Cordinator. His days may be short. Example South ALabama game. You have a drive right before half everything is clicking and you open up the 3rd qtr with something completely different.

Nick Holley struggled in the first start but was learning a new position. Averaged 5.7 yards per carry against OSU before not seeing any action in the second half.

Agree with you on the coaching job being done at Purdue.

I think the OL and QB play need to be better. Reardon had a good game at OU was hoping he would build on that.

I think the Defense has been playing real well and just needed a break. BUT OSU showed a different story. WOW hopefully that was just a bad day

But then again I was told I was an idiot and knew nothing about football on this fourm so I should probably keep my comments to myself.

danh63,

Your comments are always welcome here as far as I am concerned. Not sure on Durham's exact total from last year, but he has 2712yds rushing in his 1st 3yrs and he is a legit NFL fullback prospect. If he is healthy, he is a weapon and a great change of pace from a power perspective and 3yrs of running the ball is experience that no one currently running for KSU has. He really wears down opposing defenses and blows up opposing rushers in pass protection.

The Ohio St game was flat out embarrassing and I don't care how young of a team you have, you have to put more than 0 points on the scoreboard. I really question Brian Rock's playcalling.

If Terrell Johnson & Najee Murray return healthy and Reardon steps it up, this team will be right in the thick of the MAC East race.

We are going to get smoked again this weekend. Anything less than a 30 point loss will be a surprise to me. UVA has played some very tough opponents early on and played well. We just don't have enough to be competitive in a game like this.

I am pulling for our kids and hope they prove me wrong. Just don't see it.

RE: Week 5/Game #4: Kent State @ Virginia - danh63 - 09-24-2014 09:14 AM

Yes there could be a time that Durham would be helpful. I just don't think as a every down back. Could help with the pass blocking for sure! Maybe we need to run a 2 back set most of the time?? I was really hoping Strock would have had a better showing than he did. That might of been nerves or something. Looks like we have another shuffle on the OL for this weekend also.

We win. Hands down.

My hopes are more modest - I hope we can become more interesting offensively - open it up and throw something longer than short screens and dump offs. Even though the MAC East is weak defensively we'll need to show more offense than we have so far to hope to compete. As predicted we are holding strong with UMass in the ESPN Bottom 10. I sincerely hoped I would never see that again in my lifetime.03-banghead

After having a bye week the team better come out and be competitive. I will be ok with a loss in the long run but if it is over before halftime I would be in favor of some changes being made.

Let's be realistic, this UVA team is pretty damn good and it might be ugly, not OSU ugly but ugly nonetheless. They beat one ranked team and lost to two others by a TD each including a very good UCLA team led by what may be the Heisman Trophy winner.

Call me crazy but I say today's final will be KSU 24 UVA 21. Anthony Melchiori redeems himself with a field goal as time expires. Go Flashes!

PH - didn't mean to imply we'll hang with UVa - more likely can we keep up with MAC teams that score lots of points - OU being the exception. I am getting bored with an offense that seldom throws the ball more than 10 yards and allows opponents to crowd the line of scrimmage

First down on the first play of the game. That's progress!

What a horses#it call on that INT in the end zone. Both players were laying on the sideline before the ref decided who had it.

RE: Week 5/Game #4: Kent State @ Virginia - Polish Hammer - 09-27-2014 04:10 PM

Horrible freakin call. The WR caught that ball in the end zone and was on the ground, play us dead. You can't wrestle it away 10 seconds la ter and say it's an INT. HORRIBLE! At worst it was a tie which goes to the offense. But again, it was in the end zone and he was down and had possession of the ball at that point, play over TD. No different than a RB breaking the plane and then fumbling, as soon as he has possession in the end zone it's play over and TD. Freakin terrible to get screwed like this.

Great showing so far, we need to get some pressure up front on D, and the damn WRs need to hold onto the ball. Wayyyy too many dropped balls. If I'm Paul Haynes I'm taking every one of their gloves awY, in weather like this there's no need for them. I understand the frustration over the INTs from Reardon (2nd was horrible and 3rd was on the refs) but Strock needs to stay on the bench, he's out there looking lost and so unsure of things.

RE: Week 5/Game #4: Kent State @ Virginia - ilovegymnast - 09-27-2014 04:11 PM

Well we are in the game going into halftime and giving them all they can handle. The Reardon INTs are really killing the momentum and killing what could've been a nice lead.

Humphrey clearly had it and was on the ground...THEN the defender grabbed on and tugged and only after a few more seconds when Humphrey assumed it was dead did the defender pull it away. It was a TD without a doubt IMO and these refs take the chickenshyt way out to call it a way that the replay agrees with whatever the call on the field dictates.

And so are the numerous drops.

It wasn't clear to me if Humphrey had control or not but there is no way it could be an INT because the players were on the sideline before the receiver pulled it away from him.

RE: Week 5/Game #4: Kent State @ Virginia - Polish Hammer - 09-27-2014 04:25 PM

Shame a ref right on top of a play can get it so wrong, worse that the replay booth officials didn't get it right either as they had good replay angles.

RE: Week 5/Game #4: Kent State @ Virginia - thanksjim - 09-27-2014 04:30 PM

Let's not place all the blame on the refs. Reardon is responsible for a pick 6 and another poor INT. All in all, it was a fun first half. Let's keep it up! Go KSU!
