Many on this board ignored Connor Burchfield after his freshman season, assuming he would get no playing time as a sophomore. Ignore Burchfield's chances to be a starter next year if you will, but I'm pencilling him in as the starter at the shooting guard position next year.

I think Burchfield is a valuable asset to the team, but don't think he has a good enough all around game to be a starter for us. I think 5-10 years ago, Burchfield would be a starter on one of Tony's teams, but now, with the increase in the caliber of player we are getting, I just don't see it. Maybe he will have an incredible off-season and prove me wrong though. I'll certainly be rooting for him.

Burchfield's play, IMO, has declined this season and I venture to guess his playing time is a reflection of that.

One Tribe. One Family.

Yeah, love Burch, but while he is great bombing from the 3 PT line, his D is suspect and ball he is turnover prone. He hasn't taken a huge step this year. I think he is a a great asset off the bench and Milon will be starting next year.

Agreed. He claims he's been told that he should expect to play some small forward and some shooting guard as a freshman. Based on the level of opposition that he's faced, red-shirting probably wouldn't be a horrible thing for the young man. I just can't see him unseating any of the many seniors that will be trying to fill those minutes vacated by Dixon next year.

Back to an old posting...

I agree Jihar Williams competition wasn't great and we are loaded at the guard spots, but don't sleep on him. I'm 99% sure our coaches never saw him play for his high school team once before offering him. Our scouting and recruiting is done primarily at the major AAU venues where it is most cost effective. The coaches apparently liked what they saw versus very good talent.

He is as pure a shooter as you will find on the high school level with a quick release, deep range, and the ability to shoot well off of the dribble. He is fairly athletic and comfortable driving to the hoop.
As he physically matures and his confidence grows, I could see him filling that Daniel Dixon role nicely.

Perhaps he could play point in the future? We've currently got 3 point guards on the roster, and they are all juniors.

No, Luke Loewe is the point guard. Williams is a 6'5 shooting guard. He can handle OK, but he wouldn't be nearly as effective running the offense. Marcus he ain't, but like Marcus, he plays his best off of the point.

RE: 2017 Men's Basketball Recruiting - Tribe32 - 02-07-2017 07:39 AM

Williams reminds me of Dixon when he was in high school, but Dixon was shorter. Dixon wasn't as good an outside shooter either. I saw him play for three years when he was at Langley and he was good, but not great. Two things happened. He grew three inches and hit the weights. You never know what will happen when Jihar gets in the weight room and starts to get full time coaching and an off season regimen.

RE: 2017 Men's Basketball Recruiting - Naptown Tribe - 02-07-2017 09:35 AM

Jihar has incredible potential. It's going to be all about how hard he is willing to work and how quickly he buys in. One of the huge benefits to building a program is once here he already sees the other guys doing it and it's the norm and expectation as well as there is depth which gives you the opportunity to redshirt guys if you'd like. I'll be really curious to see if we play him next year or redshirt him. We do have a bunch of guys competing for minutes, but with losing Dixon and Omar, you can never have enough shooters. His shooting stroke is so pure. That being said, Paul Rowley can stroke it too, and we redshirted him to allow him to get some strength and because we had enough depth.

I think Jihar is a lot like Daniel and Daniel's body has really matured as he took a year at prep school and then hit the weights here. I'm not saying we absolutely should redshirt him, just that it'll be an interesting decision and to be in the place to even consider it is a big positive affirmation in the program Tony and staff have built and are building.

Loved what I have seen of Jihar. Bad competition or not, he's appears to be a great athlete with a silky, smooth shot. Can't wait to see his full potential.

Millon and Jihar Williams are both SG, so either one can replace Dixon. We will need someone to replace Prewitt. It could be Rowley, but he does not rebound well and doesn't have Prewitt's inside game.

RE: 2017 Men's Basketball Recruiting - Naptown Tribe - 02-07-2017 12:22 PM

I think Pierce is Prewitt's replacement and Malinowski will be a main player next year instead of a support player. Rowley will be a great part of the rotation with those 2 and maybe even ply Tot some on the wing if Loewe can be the back up PG

Tony gave an update on recruiting at today's Lunch with Tony's at Anna's Brick Oven.

While, of course, mentioning no names, he noted they are still trying to get "one or two" additions to the
class entering this fall, "one or two" transfers, and the remainder to the 2018 entering class.

Shaver, himself, is just recovering from a bout with the flu that swept up Malinowski and Whitman
last weekend. Non-committal on Omar's return for Thursday's ballgame.

RE: 2017 Men's Basketball Recruiting - WillaMary08 - 02-07-2017 04:32 PM

Not sure what else Shaver wants in the 2017 class besides obviously a big man but 6'5" Preston English (mentioned all the way back on the first page of this thread) is unsigned. After the first 8 games of this season he was leading the state of Kentucky in scoring (31ppg) and rebounding (11 per game). Someone on Bluegrasspreps.com used these numbers to justify English as a top player and not merely a one trick pony (that one trick being shooting) but detractors on the message board say his numbers are inflated by weak competition.

RE: 2017 Men's Basketball Recruiting - mrjoolius - 02-11-2017 01:29 PM

Pretty sure we aren't looking for a guard to finish off the 2017 class, but I've been impressed by the highlights of 6'0 Oviedo, FL guard Ivan Smith. Goes to same high school and is friends with Matt Milon, so we probably would have an inside track. No idea what his academics are like, but his raw athleticism is impressive. Fast, handles, shoots well, and most impressively, dunks anything close to the rim as a 6' guard.

RE: 2017 Men's Basketball Recruiting - Naptown Tribe - 02-11-2017 02:39 PM

We have a PG and 2/3 wing coming in and a 2 guard in Millon ready to go next year, and I think could really use a 4/5 guy to help us on the boards if we could get that in this 2017 class it would be great. Losing Omar's rebounding will hurt an already poor rebounding team and Pierce isn't strong enough yet to replace it.

RE: 2017 Men's Basketball Recruiting - LeadBolt - 02-11-2017 03:04 PM

I would think we would be looking for a 3/4, 4/5, 4 or 5.

RE: 2017 Men's Basketball Recruiting - bubbadog57 - 02-11-2017 05:25 PM

Jihar Williams was at today's game, sitting in the front row of the parents section with his parents.

Did we have anyone in on an official visit?

RE: 2017 Men's Basketball Recruiting - WillaMary08 - 02-20-2017 06:14 AM

@andrewforce8: Alum of @Illinois_Irish, 2017 F Taylor Bruninga (IL) will be evaluated by William & Mary and Pepperdine "early this week." @tbruninga32

RE: 2017 Men's Basketball Recruiting - bubbadog57 - 02-20-2017 06:55 AM

Coaching staff continuing to look very hard at bringing in one or two additions to Loewe-Williams class next August. One target, difficult to fill, is another big man at center to replace Seacat and allow flexibility with Whitman and Knight....
