College players from Memphis? - kabluey - 09-16-2014 03:19 PM

Anyone know of a database of college basketball players from Memphis? Especially distinguishing schollies and walk-ons. Doesn't have to be "of all time," but even if it's the past two years it would be nice.

Either way, thanks for reading.

Oh, and all colleges, not just U of M.

I don't but it seems like every time that I am watching an $EC game someone from Memphis gets mentioned.

4 or 5 years ago, I saw a story(sry, don't remember what svc-CA or online somewhere) that stated 20 something(don't remember exact #-it was 21-24) kids from Memphis were STARTERS for SEC schools. No number was given for how many were actually on scholarship.

Also, it only mentioned SEC, not # of kids playing D1.

I have always had the position that when a top player leaves town and goes to school out of town it has the same impact on the Memphis economy as a business packing up and leaving town. The kid produces economic impact for the out of town school and the city where the school is located which could be used at home.

If they're only offered scholarships out of town, you can't blame them. Actually, I don't blame them if they take another offer over the Tigers (except if it is L'vile or UConned or such a rival/hated school; I get a little testy over that). I don't blame kids for wanting to live in other parts of the country, and I'm not saying that to knock Memphis (this time).

Wow. Thanks. I've been intrigued with the subject since I found out about the MSU-UAB game, then the Sporting News article calling Memphis the basketball capital per capita. Then, last year I think I read that Toronto had like 21 players either in college or in March Madness, I can't recall which. Anyway, its a great way for these kids to break their cycles, maybe get a pro career even if in Europe, and do something constructive. Some have returned such as Tony Harris and Robert Okelley.

So it's lookin' like ~10/year use basketball to get a college scholarship, huh? For a 1.3 mill metro. Which (according to my neglected mathematical skills) is something like 7.69 per 100K residents.

One way to look at it. Another way to look at it is that there are only around 4500 scholarships to go around in D1 basketball. Some of the players mentioned above are walk-ons who are not on scholarship.

Easterwood, you're an (if not the) expert in this area, and I know you're busy, so thanks.

Is this unusually high this year, or about average?
