Coach Fuente - Mtyler - 09-08-2014 09:42 AM

I hate to bring this up, because I am big on enjoying the season if it turns out as well as it could, but do you think the school will put up the same full court press to keep Fuente should other jobs come calling as they have in keeping basketball coaches. I know it's too early to talk about, but Fuente has turned this thing around quickly and that is sure to raise eyebrows of anyone looking for a coach. I know we wouldn't be able to keep him if a top 10-15 type program came calling, but I just wonder if we would be able to keep him if one of the lower end P5 jobs came calling.

You are right, it's too early to talk about.

We need to actually win some games before that is even a consideration. But, I do believe that there will be a significant effort to keep him IF we are fortunate enough to be in that position.

Is there a choice? IF, we do well this season and begin to build momentum we CANNOT afford to lose him and try to hire someone else. who will do well and continue to build momentum. Looks like we did well with Fuente and we need to keep him around for at least a few more years.

RE: Coach Fuente - Brother Bluto - 09-08-2014 10:29 AM

Not this already

RE: Coach Fuente - Mick Light - 09-08-2014 10:31 AM

Lifetime contract.

RE: Coach Fuente - Brother Bluto - 09-08-2014 10:36 AM

The assistants are really who we need to worry about. I know of one position coach that is being housed by a local family. His wife and kids are in another state and he can't afford two notes

RE: Coach Fuente - oldmangrizz - 09-08-2014 10:58 AM

If the OP said it was too early to talk about this, why are people talking about this?

Memphis fans are hysterical.

Only here would people be so pumped after a loss they think that every SEC school in America will be after our coach.

+8 on your wisdom; insight and brilliance....This is something that can be handled to show commitment, as it is being show by the staff and attitude of this regime. It can also be reciprocated to the coaches so that we show a sense of commitment to continue to bolster this program....the key is to work on the little things then the more major concerns will be that much easier to handle. gr8 points and also wonderful to discuss this now rather than let it creep up on us when it becomes a flood that's too much to handle! 07-coffee3

This regime is legit;the attitude of our team and city is about to rally around this in the very near future....think about where we were! As Fuente sees what this city can become,in regards to a rally around this team....I'm sure that their will be an immense sense of accomplishment and pride for what he has built here, and I'm sure that will go a loooong way!

One of the caveats to being a successful football caoch, Is that(a least in my history of Memphis football) there is not a tremendous amount of success that results can be compared to.... Also, we have so much upside (it's immense actually), He is in a wonderful recruiting area... And can easily be considered royalty here in a borderline SEC region that will rise his stock tremendously......Kinda like what Cal did, as far as being considered elite or creme-of-crop in the coaching ranks! 07-coffee3

Agree. So the assistant needs more money? That arrangement sounds way too temporary.

I think his wife does well but I don't think those position coaches make enough to justify getting into a long lease with their contract status or lack thereof.

Fill the stadium or he won't stay for any amount of money

Haven't missed a home game in 23 years. I'll be there no matter what. It's never made sense to me that in a city as large as ours, (including the outskirts) that we can't muster up 50,000 people to come to a game. As much as I don't like it, I think a "consistent ceiling" for us is 40,000. Now can we go above that? Sure. Things like Kroger tickets, games against SEC teams, etc will boost attendance well above 40,000. But as far as a "consistent ceiling" (given we were sustaining success) I think would be ~40,000~

RE: Coach Fuente - Mick Light - 09-08-2014 02:50 PM

The Memphis area has a lot of "fans" with dual loyalties. They may have an $EC team they root for because the Tigers have been classily poor in football since the 70's. When the team gets hot they will show up.
