Two Starters - odufansam - 09-01-2014 06:36 AM

Based on the depth chart two weeks ago and Rob Thompson getting injured, it looked like Justin Noye was going to start against Hampton. Martez Simpson has been set as a starter since the Spring. Neither of them got into the game Saturday.

Anyone know what happened? Are they hurt?

RE: Two Starters - ODUR8R - 09-01-2014 06:40 AM

Simpson was on the trainers table the majority of the open scrimmage. Paulhill earned the starting job over Davila, Noye and Byrum. Noye and Davila didn't play while Byrum earned snaps. Sort of interesting since Noye was an early enrollee and at one time listed as a starter. Hopefully there isn't more to this, it was a big deal to get Noye down here.

Thanks for the update. There has been a lot of movement between the safeties. I think that may explain the breakdowns in coverage. Seems like Paulhill was a backup Strong Safety up until a week ago when he was moved to Free Safety. It may have been baptism by fire for him due to injuries.

I noticed starters on kick coverage, namely Andre Simmons. It's nice to see that as a priority but eventually guys like Noye and Davila should be on that unit and not our most valuable defenders.

BW's depth charts mean nothing, used merely for motivational purposes. Did the Fulgham "secret weapon" kid even make the field? Lot of BS coming from Hill complex.

Integration of Fulgham will be very slow. I do expect him to be playing 20+ reps by the end of the season.

RE: Two Starters - jumpshooter - 09-01-2014 09:01 AM

Just made my point. According to Aug 27 Pilot story, Fulgham was backup WR going into Saturday. But didn't play?

I'm not sure what your point of this is. Fulgham has looked good thru camp, but I'm sure him redshirting would be best for all probably. Bentley is probably backu too, but we won't see him outside of injury.

Did anyone inside Hill complex ever say Fulgham would play? He's played 1 or 2 years of football. There were 8 WRs listed on the depth chart.

RE: Two Starters - odu83alumni - 09-01-2014 09:47 AM

I totally expect Fulgham to redshirt unless like 4 wide receivers get hurt.

RE: Two Starters - jumpshooter - 09-01-2014 10:00 AM

From Pilot story: "Wide receivers coach Zohn Burden said that scholarship freshmen Quintin Reynolds, Jonathan Duhart and Marques Little will play, but so will two players who walked-on without a scholarship -- Travis Fulgham, a Northern Virginia native is backing up starter Melvin Vaughn," So, yes, someone inside inside Hill said he would play

Fulgham listed as top backup to M. Vaughn . . . So my point is the depth charts and info coming from Hill is mostly BS

Simpson did not play either. T J Ricks started at the Outside LB Position. He rotated throughout the game with True Freshman Isaiah Worthy.

Isaiah Worthy was not even on the 2 deep, but he played a major role during the game.

Simpson has an ankle injury, but I really like Worthy. When healthy, Simpson should replace Ricks in the rotation. The big problem is Free Safety. We need an upgrade over Paulhill. Sadly, it looks like the coaches think the freshmen are not ready. I wonder if Thompson would have been better than Paulhill. It appears that he is out for a long time.

My mistake, but I fully expect Fulgham to redshirt.

Also, the two deep changes day to day at times.

Simpson is number 44 correct? I'm not sure how many defensive snaps he got, but at the very least he is on kickoff returns and played there

That's the right attitude, Painted, because they're a joke

Hehe it makes me wonder about something else now.
When I played HS football, we had a guy who had been a starter, a captain, and universally loved player from 10th grade on. The second game of his senior year he was "injured", and never played again.
Years later he told me in confidence that he was asked to get "injured" in the best interest of the team by the coaches so that they could replace him with an arguably better player, but without the "smack in the face" to him and the controversy that might ensue from the parents and fans. (Of course I have no way to verify the veracity of this.)

This all came back to me when Thomas DeMarco's Canadian coach talked about the emotional impact of his injury, and stated he had never before had an injury that kept him from playing.

Reece Schmidt is No. 44. Martez Simpson is 36
