I'm leaving the office at 11 to fly my flag in aerolot. I'm so ready for the season. Hopefully the huskies are as well.
Lots of starters out for BYU, including both starting CBs on defense. Look for a big day from UConn's Geremy Davis. I think BYU has a hard time covering that spread based on UConn's history ATS at home, their 1-2 history including an awful loss to UVA last year in road openers under Bronco, and due to the suspensions. UConn is too much of an unknown to predict an outright win, but this game should be close throughout unless Taysom Hill cannot be contained by UConn's defense. Diaco was successful in keeping him in check as DC at Notre Dame, so ideally that knowledge will translate over to a solid defensive scheme for the huskies. Obviously, we do not have the athletes ND had on D, but it might just be enough with some key playmakers out on offense as well.
Thrilled CFB is back in Connecticut.

This game will be decided based on how the following three questions are answered:
1) will the UConn defense stay disciplined, maintain their assignments and keep Hill in the pocket? If not (as has historically been a problem for UConn against mobile quarterbacks) we will be in serious trouble.
2) will the UConn offensive line get any push? historically (pre-Pasqualoni), that has been UConn's hallmark - smashmouth football supplemented by the pass. We have finally given control back to Foley (the OL-line coach through those smashmouth years that was "reassigned" by the past regime) who we all believe, and Diaco has said, has the line back in order. We have a strong north/south running back (Marriner) with a young true-freshman change of pace (Newsome), competent quarterback(s) and stud receiver that will benefit from a strong line. If we lose the line, and thus the rush, our passing game is not strong enough to win in a one-dimensional game.
3) how will our special teams perform? we literally have no idea how the special teams will perform - and they were a big problem last year. We do have a nice punter (Puyols), but we shockingly just learned that Diaco is the first coach to have worked specifically with the punting core in years (unbelievable). we will also need to gain some yards on returns. the last three years have been abominable. prior to that, kick-off/punt returns were a strength and helped us get back in, and win, a number of games (e.g. @ ND).

Can't wait for tonight! 7 needs to hurry up and come! Tonight is a huge chance for UConn to prove that we are back on the rise. It's a great chance to get the Diaco era set off with positive momentum.

Yes. ESPN, Armed Services Network and I think re-aired on a BYU broadcast. I sure hope we play at least solid, disciplined football, win or lose.

Excited, drunk, nervous - in that order.
We all know, deep-down, that rebuilding this mess is going to take time and that we will be lucky to make a bowl this year. And we know that BYU has more weapons and depth than us. And we know that until we see Diaco's recruits on the field (he is recruiting a physically huge team, bigger than any we have ever had) we really can't judge him.
BUT - we still think that if we get back to the hard-nose, smashmouth football that defined the Edsall years we have a chance (especially at home). That feeling is bolstered by our S&C coach who has noticeably changed the physique of our team (we pulled him from Miss. State and is lauded by both MSU and UConn players as turning twigs to sticks - apparently his diet/work-out regiment is incredible).
