Carleton Game 1 - Stammers - 08-17-2014 01:10 AM

The guards came out very tentative. They weren't trying to get in the lane, break down defenders and made no attempt to feed the post. The bigs weren't getting good position down low and weren't fighting for the ball.

The players all hustled and worked hard on defense and this is part of the reason got every easy shot they wanted. Our defense was over playing, out of position and gambling. Iverson played bad defense but worked very very hard.

The second half was better because we played more controlled on the defensive end and more freely on offense . There was no noticeable difference in athleticism until we started running. Then you could see that we have athletes. We looked gassed the first 3 quarters but seemed to find an extra gear in the 4th quarter . Very surprising .

Magee
When he had 4 points I posted on Roar that he impressed me the most. Fearless, a hard worker and gets to the rim. BUT, I don't think his handle is good enough right now to be a D1 point guard. Maybe I'm wrong. We will see. He is going to be a great player .

Pookie
Steady and quiet. Was expecting him to be more reckless and mistake prone . Will be a good scorer finisher and makes good passes finishing drives. Not sure how good he is running an offense but it was just his first game.

Hawkins
Had flashes of everything. His height will probably be an issue against better opponents. I think he gets more minutes at the 3 than the 4. If he can defend the position. Seemed quick enough but no telling given the opponent. Seems to run the floor really well.

Iverson
Quicker with the ball; seemed to understand where to be on offense. Played poorly defensively but really tried hard and was fully engaged. Didn't have any post moves but hit a nice 16 footer. Was surprised at his intensity .

Markel
Tough, quick feet, nice looking stroke . Imo, more of a point guard than Magee at this point.

Shaq
Inconsistent. Intensity came and went multiple times. Didn't have too many nice post moves.

King
Looked very confident and made plays. Should become a leader. Form looked good on long and short range shots . Is NOT reverting to Old Form on free throws. Movement is compact like it was the 2nd half of last season.

If the point was to get experience playing together and to learn; great first game on both counts. It's only one game so every player might be very different from one fame to the next. Without Johnson our guards are going to struggle, no two ways about it.

I was very impressed at how the players all hustled and cheered each other on, even when we were down 30. The players were cheering made baskets and good plays like it was a tight, regular season game

Yes, thanks, Stammers.

Same time tomorrow. 04-cheers

Great analysis, Stammers, thanks. I'm glad to hear Nick King seems more confident. Last year he was tentative at first, then kind of hit a stride to finish the season, but still a bit tentative I thought. Good to hear he's gaining confidence and I think he'll surprise a lot of people. Also I had the same expectations about Pookie (nervous, reckless) so good to know he's steady and in control. Looking forward to hearing more for the next games, especially the newcomers.

Did Austin Nichols make the trip?

RE: Carleton Game 1 - holyterror - 08-17-2014 05:10 AM

Great job, Stammers. Thanks for being our eyes.

Wonder if the Carleton stud would consider a transfer.

Nichols is there but didn't play.

Thanks for updates. Glad you got to watch the games live.
Sounds like once the team shakes off the jitters, they will be good.
I didn't expect too much from all of them, just a learning process for them.
Go TIGERS!

He and his brother have already graduated, and are out of eligibility. They just came back to help make the game more competitive. I'd say it worked, lol.

It'll be interesting to see how the team reacts. Lots of newcomers being welcomed to a higher level of play. Once they adjust (plus we didn't have Nichols) it would be fun to replay the game. The outcome would be much different.

I love Shaq but this is not looking good..

So a Canadian fellow registered last night and came on Roar late last night in the game thread. In his first two posts he explained we were wrong about the Scrubs having graduated. lol. He said, in Canada, players have 5 years of eligibility and the Scrubs were scheduled to graduate in 2015.

Yea, no, I said?

Anyway, I don't think they have trolls in Canada, so I believed him. lol.

This is not true as far as basketball goes. Academically, the have graduated but in Canada you can play for 5 years. They are members of this year's team moving forward.

King will only surprise the people who spent last year saying he couldn't play because of defense or some such nonsense. A lot of us already know how good he'll be with the shackles off

RE: Carleton Game 1 - snowtiger - 08-17-2014 10:32 AM

I want someone to be our go-to three pt man.

Here's an interesting three point stat..Carelton--16 of 35.
while we were 2 of 9.

Live and *** by the three, as they say.

I didn't see anything from our guards as far as driving and finding open players and I didn't see much off the ball movement to find open spots. Spacing on offense was poor
