U Akron is a "proud sponsor" - DrTorch - 08-13-2014 07:53 PM

of the Cleveland Gay games.

That's inappropriate for a public university.

I'd say it is inappropriate.

As long as Cleveland hosts the STRAIGHT games and this University becomes a 'proud sponsor', I don't see a problem wit..........03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao

Are they giving out chili dogs?

(if you don't know what that means then consider yourself lucky and don't try to find out)

Depends on where the money comes from to fund the sponsorship. The state funds about 25% of the U Akron budget, the rest comes from tuition, grants, and donations. If an alumnus gives big money for recruiting and puts not limits on how the money is used then who cares?

Religious nuts care.

I presume we are talking about UA being a financial sponsor. Yes...Inappropriate because it is discriminatory.

tuition and grant money should not be used for this either. So your weak response continues to grow weaker.

If an alumnus gives toward this very event, then maybe. It is difficult to see how this fits w/ the university's mission. Nevertheless, the university is then NOT the sponsor, and your point becoms moot.

Futhermore, does Akron discriminate against others?

Great question... why don't you ask them to show a list of all their sponsorships? You may find out that they do something for this event, and something for a black association, hispanic association, a greek rush event, a local HS sports program (or a lot of them, as UC does this)... it may just be something they put out to anything that they can sponsor at a reasonable price that can get a lot of visibility. That's what I would do if I were marketing something.

While the state does give some money to these schools now, the vast majority of their budgets now come from private sources. At UC I think the state portion comes out to about 15% now... with the rest coming from private sources. It seems to me that the public schools in Ohio are more of a private business than a government organization.

The conservatives are probably the ones that contribute to school functions and they get this. I'd be asking a lot of questions.

RE: U Akron is a "proud sponsor" - dbackjon - 08-14-2014 03:24 PM

LOL - Probably they are a sponsor because the gay games are bringing millions of dollars into Akron.
The event is bringing over 30,000 people to Northeast Ohio from all over the world.

Just like the City of Phoenix is a proud sponsor of my league's softball tournament - because they get far more back in tax dollars collected than they spend in any sponsorship.

Many times the answer is much simpler than you are trying to make it.

RE: U Akron is a "proud sponsor" - HeartOfDixie - 08-14-2014 03:25 PM

For me, it isn't a question of wether or not I agree with what they are sponsoring but wether or not sponsorship, even if it results in a net gain monetarily, is the proper place of any state or state actor.

Anyone can attend and participate in the Games.

UA's sponsorship was to allow some of their venues to be used in the games. Games that will result in a lot tourism dollars coming to Summit County.

Besides, the whole premise of the games is to promote the inclusion of LGBT persons in sports. Opposing that is not going to be an effective argument.

Akron isn't providing a venue for some sex orgy, but rather for an athletic event open to the general public. Simple as that.

It went beyond that, but I don't know to what extent.
