Texas principal fired for telling students to speak English - smn1256 - 08-09-2014 12:14 AM

This is sad. We finally get a good school administrator and they can her. Enforcing Texas law takes a back seat to political correctness and the young Spanish speakers are worse off for it.

Quote:By Cheryl K. Chumley - The Washington Times - Friday, August 8, 2014

The Texas principal who was placed on administrative leave and then fired for telling Hispanic students at her middle school that they should speak English in the classroom can now speak freely — the gag order has expired — and says that her request only mirrored what’s written in state law.

Amy Lacey was placed on administrative leave in 2013 after she asked via an intercom announcement that Hempstead Middle School students should speak English in the classroom. She shortly after learned that the school board declined to renew her contract and would be firing her.

Meanwhile, reports swirled that Ms. Lacey had banned Spanish from the school campus, rocking national headlines.

But Ms. Lacey’s attorney, Mark Robinett, said that’s not true — that “there was no ban,” the Houston Chronicle reported.

“There were no consequences for speaking Spanish in class,” he told the newspaper. “In fact, Ms. Lacey stated her respect for the Hispanic culture and language.”

Ms. Lacey herself is finally allowed to tell her story. A gag order that was imposed on her during the school board’s investigation of the matter has finally expired, and the former Hempstead principal wrote a letter to the Houston newspaper, explaining her side of the story.

“I informed students it would be best to speak English in the classrooms to the extent possible, in order to help prepare them for [state] tests,” she wrote, the Daily Mail reported. “It is important to note that I did not ban the use of Spanish anywhere in the school or at any time. … Teachers had reported to me that they had experienced instances in which students had been asked to stop talking during instruction, and they responded that it was their right to speak Spanish — ignoring the fact that they shouldn’t have been speaking [in any language] during class without permission. The perception of the teachers was that students were being disrespectful and disrupting learning, and they believed they could get away with it by claiming racism.”

Ms. Lacey said the incident was blown way out of proportion — and that she only advocated what Texas states in its code as law.

“This is in keeping with Title 19, Texas Administrative Code 89.1201 c,” she wrote, in the Houston Chronicle.

That code section, as reported by Inquistir.com, reads: “English is the basic language of this state. Public schools are responsible for providing a full opportunity for all students to become competent in speaking, reading, writing and comprehending the English language. … The mastery of basic English skills is a prerequisite for effective participation in the state’s educational program. Using English to the extent possible would also allow non-Spanish-speaking teachers a better opportunity to assess understanding and learning.”

This is what happens when people outside of the school system think they know what is best for people inside the school system.

The left is teaching these kids that any encouragement for them to speak English is racism.

It's all about the fundamental transformation of the United States.

The left is tired of white European culture and is working hard to make it secondary.

Things that can not get a teacher fired:

1. Watching porn at school
2. Having inappropriate relations with a student
3. Violating free speech rights
4. Taking away a childs desk and making her sit on the floor for the entire year

Things that CAN get a teacher fired:

1. Asking kids to speak English in the classroom'

Unfortunately, for how ridiculous that list is, it is true. You want a little linkie next to each one of them that proves it?

It may have been true in one isolated case but that's not how you made it seem. Now fix it.

Ant this teacher getting fired is what, one isolated case, that has a chilling effect on all teachers. Whereas the other examples are enablers for perverted teachers. Go ahead defend the prevents. Champion their cause.

No one is defending perverts. What I'm saying is that most schools are good and the teachers know what they are doing. You guys like to take isolated incidents and make them seem as if the whole system is broken.

I believe the results of the public school systems speak for themselves. The union provides tenure to ensure the crappy teachers will be kept, and the good teachers who want to make a difference are cut. It especially affects the poor and blacks, who dont have the opportunity to modify to a better private school. They are stuck in the union infested bastion of mediocrity. To add injury to insult, the private schools can provide a quality education for thousands less per student per year than the public abyss of waste and indoctrination.

Ohhh, touche.

I'm not defending Fit in this one but he does have a point in some of that list. My wife is a retired "Educator" so I learned a lot of what going on in El Paso school districts. She had the pleasure of working in three of them. Most of her business students, who were ESL for the most part, needed further indoctrination (teaching) in their native language. She did not teach it in Spanish but when there were questions as to some part of the lesson she would explain in their language.

That list by UofMState is hogwash. Maybe in his school districts co-mingling with students in a sexual way is condoned but not here in El Paso. I know because it has happened and not only is the teacher fired he/she is charged with statutory rape, among other punishments.

In one h.s. there was a complete house cleaning where many teachers were let go. Fortunately, my wife was kept. She had, before this, put in her application to another h.s. in another district because we had moved and she would be closer to her job. I advised her that even though she was one of the chosen teachers the school would be under a microscope and would hinder her teaching. Besides, I told her that the district wasn't being very loyal to its teachers so she shouldn't feel like a traitor for wanting to leave, which she wanted. So she left. So that charge of tenure goes out the window for UofM. Many with tenure were let go.

Yes I am, although my principle would recite the the Lord's Prayer every morning on the intercom Different times, different public school systems.

Please provide a link where tenured teachers were let go en masse. I know of a lot of school districts who would like to enact that very same plan.

And El Paso seems to have an epidemic of teacher sex abuses. After reading this article, tell me how many of these teachers were FIRED. http://www.elpasotimes.com/news/ci_25873924/teacher-sex-cases-el-paso-part-national-epidemic

RE: Texas principal fired for telling students to speak English - olliebaba - 08-09-2014 05:00 PM

Oh nooooooooooo. You want me to do research? Nevah happen. I'm out of school for a reason, otherwise I'd still be doing research papers.

Look, UofM, I'm not disputing that schools because of Left Wing, atheist stupidity have or are trying to take God out of our institutions of learning. I also agree that in some districts LGBT crap is ok in its place. But, we do know that in El Paso there is a more conservative approach in its districts. Unfortunately, there are cases where the Lefties will rule.

RE: Texas principal fired for telling students to speak English - smn1256 - 08-09-2014 05:25 PM

I remember a couple of years ago a bunch of school admins got fired because they were doctoring grades or moving kids through the system in order to meet federal standards, but I'm not sure how many of them were teachers. But then again, if you're a government employee in El Paso, you have a good chance of going to jail for all the other things that are going on.
