Before Burrell...and without seeing the newcomers... - ItsDude - 08-02-2014 09:22 PM

Depth:

PG - Pookie, Markel, Dominic
2G - Woodson, Iverson, Markel, King
3- King, Iverson, Hawkins
4-Nichols, Hawkins, Shaq
5- Shaq, Nichols, Dom

Burrell could throw that whole thing around.

What is this obsession with putting King at the 2?

RE: Before Burrell...and without seeing the newcomers... - HoopDreams - 08-02-2014 10:17 PM

I think Burrell starts at the 2.

What makes you say that? It's not that I don't agree, I don't know much about him, I haven't seen him play.

Probably based on his age, skill set and what we have returning experience wise.

I see Burrell starting the 2 most of the year as well, but we just won't know until we see him on the floor.

Thank you. Have you seen him play? Can he shoot the 3?

You got that right, he can most definitely shoot the three. I hope he shoots some 3's this year. He has incredible range.

What I would do (based on reputation on the new guys):

Crawford
Burrell
King
Nichols
Goodwin

What I think Josh might do if I had to make a guess:

Powell
Crawford
Burrell
Nichols
Goodwin

Also, if Powell and Crawford are the starting backcourt, don't be surprised if their roles are similar to what Chris and Joe's were at times with Powell spending a lot of time off the ball and Crawford runing the team.

He serious length and wingspan at 6-7. He can rebound, defend and has a good offensive game. Not a 3 pt "specialist", but can hit an open look and will shoot from out there.

As other have said, he has a Will Barton type of game. Not an exact clone of WB, but that type of game and size on the perimeter.

If his handles remain solid at this level, I like his chances.

Good report. Thank you

I love that he's taking yoga to help his agility and lateral quickness for defense.

RE: Before Burrell...and without seeing the newcomers... - 450bench - 08-02-2014 11:58 PM

Pookie
Avery Woodson
King
Nichols
Shaq

King is the 3. Period. Woodson is the 2, shoots lights out and is tough. Burrell is really good, but it's gonna take him some time. Pookie is ahead of Crawford right now. Comfortably. Iverson sees big minutes in several spots and Hawkins is a hammer and will play a lot. Dom is going to be really good.
There are minutes to go around.

We should out rebound most teams if King plays 3. He seems to have a knack for getting rebounds. With another year for Shaq and Austin to add strength, hopefully being ahead in rebounds will translate to some wins against teams that may seemingly have more talent. I have seen the reverse of that previously.

RE: Before Burrell...and without seeing the newcomers... - idroot4russia - 08-03-2014 12:52 AM

What is the early word on Dominic Magee? Not a lot of buzz so far for a 4 star point guard with good size. Didn't Cal even throw this guy a bone after he struck out on a couple other guys? I had high expectations, hope his lack of mentions isn't a bad sign.

On video he looks like he has good quickness for his size and he seems to be able to get into the lane and score.

If Powell and Woodson end up as our starting backcourt as 450 has it above, I would not hate that one bit. Their ability to shoot the ball would open up a ton of options. Shaq and Austin could potentially have a lot of room to operate down low, if King's touch comes back around those three on the perimeter could really compliment our post game with Shaq and Austin. You could also sub out Shaq and Austin and bring Dom in at the 5, slide King to the 4, and bring in another shooter at the 3. Spread the floor and force the opponent to have to guard big Dom 1 on 1 in the post or let Pookie beat his man off the dribble.

RE: Before Burrell...and without seeing the newcomers... - ericsrevenge76 - 08-03-2014 01:27 AM

I'm a little surprise everyone is dismissing his as a starting PG as well.

We basically have zero experience at the point and he is the only true PG we landed. Sure, Pookie is a PG but he is a scoring PG at this point.

But then again, with all the guards we lost we may need Pook to give us some points.

RE: Before Burrell...and without seeing the newcomers... - snowtiger - 08-03-2014 03:11 AM

All I know is I can't wait to see the team when I read these posts. Pookie has more experience than if he came straight from high school this year. He's got the idea of how the academic thing works at least.

I wonder if he'll charge into a crowded middle like Derrick Rose did and pop up like a jack in the box.

RE: Before Burrell...and without seeing the newcomers... - holyterror - 08-03-2014 05:11 AM

It'll all come down to team chemistry and "buy-in" to the plan. As usual.

From the 3 position, I expect great energy, at least, as several talented players fight for minutes. Gonna be hard to keep Nick on the bench.

From the 4 and 5, I expect great things. Period.

From the guards, I expect everything and nothing.

RE: Before Burrell...and without seeing the newcomers... - dan o - 08-03-2014 07:25 AM

My speculation regarding rotation:

PG
Pookie-fr
Dom Magee -fr

SG
Woodson-so
Crawford-fr

Either wing spot
Burrell-jr

SF

King-so
Iverson-so

PF
Nichols -so
Hawkins-jr

C
Goodwin-jr
Woodson-so

Doubt that Josh will ever use that many, so there will be some shaking out to do before conference play.

For a game right now that's who it will likely be. It could change by November for sure.
