Where is Geron Johnson? - Tigerfan74 - 07-15-2014 04:30 AM

Last I heard Geron was going to be on Rockets summer league team. Anyone know where he is?

RE: Where is Geron Johnson? - NigelTufnel - 07-15-2014 06:40 AM

Geron is on the Rockets for the LV session, two games so far ... about 28 minutes total, he's 0-5 from the field so far, but has contributed with some rebounds and steals. He would be a complete long shot to make a team. He will have to choose b/w overseas and the Development League it would appear.

Dixon has showed up in none of the box scores that I have read. He was supposed to play for someone out west, I think.

He tried out with Kings, but was not invited to any Summer League teams, or declined all invitations...I don't know which.

Yea..I've watched the games. Geron has been hohum so far. If you can believe this, the reffing has been obnoxiosly questionable in the Vegas League. The refs are also trying out and being evaluated, so their calls were pretty horrendous...at least the first day.
They probably have calmed down somewhat. But thanks to them, there was no flow to many of the games.

Anyway, Geron's team will be playing the Clippers 5PM tonight, Memphis time.

Can't believe these two guys ended up like this.. Dixon looked like a future NBA player while he was at Mizzou... That's the "softness" of Pastner's teams.

Dixon never looked like an nba player at mizzou.

Too short and not enough quickness, hops or explosion.

Elite college guard though and a long pro career if he wants it.

I think it's more than that, although some of our players are indeed "softer" than they are "tough".

The NBA is made up of about 400 players. The NCAA is made up of about 4500 players. Maybe as many as 1500 players leave college each year. Maybe 100 new players (of all ages and nations) sniff the NBA each year.

Odds are long that any individual player gets a shot.

It's a truly elite group, and Memphis has its share of players in that group.

And, back to your observation, the majority of players who make it to the NBA are not "soft". Tough is always a good quality to look for.

However, I don't think I've ever heard Geron Johnson referred to as "soft".

oh well. We should take his/her observations about 'softness' with at least two grains of salt times 3.

He did?

Yup, especially while he was sitting on the bench there.

You have to offer some juicy bait to fish in the offseason. This is a pretty good effort.

Bit shy of a 2 on the bait scale...I'd say. Guess we have to wait and see how many more take the hook.

None of our guys looked like NBA players. It has nothing to do with Josh's "softness", just about talent. Funny that a thread about Geron brought out Josh bashing since he gave Geron an 18th chance and helped turn his life around. Assuming he stays on the right path, I believe Geron has a bright future ahead of him in whatever he decides to do.

This quote says it correctly.

We had an elite team with elite college talent that was always going to be a hard slog to the NBA:

- JJ: too small to get in the lane in the NBA, will make major money in euroball and be a HUGE success as an international
- CC: too inconsistent with his one potential NBA skill (shooting) and not an NBA level athlete. Will play for money, but likely overseas.
- Dixon: kind of a mix between JJ/CC, but not a real point and too small to play the 2 in the NBA, slight and can get banged around. Will play for money as well, likely overseas.
- Geron: physically probably the best bet, not as skilled, but if he goes to Europe and continues to develop, can come back as a 'D and 3' type and become a Ariza type off the bench in the NBA.

If we are defining success as being an NBA player, that is a VERY narrow definition. All four of these guys will play a kids game for a good living and then be set up via degrees and personal discipline to be elite leaders in business, their communities, whatever they work toward.

I am immensely proud of our '14 class and think they represent our city and fan base very well considering. They are all already successful and will continue to be successful as long as they put in the work (not just on the court, but in life).

I am certainly welcome to criticizing Pastner, but criticizing him for not making NBA players out of these four elite college (but not quite NBA caliber) players rings incredibly hollow. Put these guys on Duke/UNC/UK and they still aren't in the association at this point.

30 teams, 12 active spots, 15 total? 450 success stories at a time and the rest of D1 is bums? No way Jose, WAY too narrow a focus. These guys did well...
