Rank the 2014 Bowls - Side Show Joe - 06-27-2014 09:18 AM

I can't wait for Two-A-Days to get here. We are running out of things to talk about.

With the talk about the Bahamas Bowl, I was wondering how you view next season's bowl line-up. How would you rank C-USA's 2014 bowls? If your teams gets a bowl, which would you prefer? Which would you hope to avoid?

Would be happy with any of them after the last few seasons in Sun Belt... Will say though, none of these bowls will be very easy to travel to from Bowling Green.....

I find it interesting that you like the Bahamas Bowl over the the Boca Bowl. Both are against the MAC, but traveling to the Bahamas would probably be more expensive. I'd rank them a little different.

*Peach
HOD vs. Big10
Independence (if we get it) vs. SEC or ACC
New Mexico vs. MWC
Hawaii vs. MWC
Boca vs. MAC
Bahamas vs. MAC

Bowl season for me is about the destination vs cost not who we play. So my first choice will be any place with beaches/ocean that we can spend 5/6 days at. Shreveport, Louisiana does nothing for me...and I'm hoping our away against La. Tech is a night game so we don't have to spend 2 days there. would love to drive down on game day and leave the next day. So that leaves HOD as #4 for me, then New Mexico..long drive but since we never been west of Texas it would be a good trip. Independence would probably be the best opponent and be the bowl we would miss the least amount of basketball games. But it's last for me

Boca
Hawaii
Bahamas
HoD
New Mexico
Independence

Not enough to be significant

Flights out of Charleston WV 1 month in advance.

Charleston to Freeport - $560
Charleston to Ft. Lauderdale - $520
Charleston to Palm Beach - $540

And much of the cost difference would be eaten away by the need to rent a car for the Boca Bowl.

Plus, the Bahamas is a better destination.

Heart of Dallas
Independence
New Mexico
Bahamas
Hawaii
Boca Raton

If Marshall can't get into the Access Bowl, I'd love to see them land the Peach. As a Rice fan, I'd love the Heart of Dallas. After that, it really doesn't matter, as long as we go somewhere.

CUSA really needs to create or affiliate itself with a good bowl game in the Northeast somewhere. The East champion needs a bowl game with a P5 opponent that's closer to Marshall, WKU, MTSU and ODU. The West already has the Heart of Dallas (B10) and EAST schools shouldn't have to travel there.

AFAIK, the Peach IS an access bowl.

Thank you. Whenever people start talking about adding bowls they always seem to want one in Texas! Can we get one in DC, or Philly or Pittsburg or Charlotte or somewhere near there?

Yes only makes senses, I think we have enough eastern schools that would benefit from a closer location for those schools mentioned...

How much do you think it would cost to fly from Charleston to Oahu? Remember, when you get to LA, you're only 1/2 way there.

Based on that window, announcements would need to be made Nov 20-26th. Is that likely/possible?

Expensive, it would likely be Charleston to Dallas to LA/SF/Seattle to Oahu.

I primarily ranked the bowls based on quality of opponent.

Yeah, my point was that going to Nassau (not Freeport; you'd need a boat to get to the game) is a lot like going to Hawaii but for a lot less money and a lot quicker. I'd rank it:

Indy (Shreveport) v. SEC/ACC
HoD (Dallas) v. B1G
Bahamas (Nassau) v. MAC
New Mexico (Albuquerque) v. MWC
Boca Raton v. MAC
Hawaii (Oahu) v. MWC

weighting both oppenent and location.

If you're going to Hawaii from the east coast, you have to go for at least ten days. That is difficult on short notice, especially during the holiday season. That being said, Hawaii >>>>>Bahamas in terms of beauty and fun, although you pay for that.

American Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines both fly non-stop to HNL from DFW

United I think flies non-stop to HNL from both O'Hare and Houston

Fares one month out from Charleston to Honolulu

$1,175 via Charlotte and Phoenix (US Airways)

$1,269 via Washington Dulles (United)

some other combos scattered about, but those are the two cheapest.
