ESPN3 tonight - Fort Bend Owl - 05-31-2014 06:02 AM

I thought our game might be on ESPN2 or ESPNU but instead it's just on ESPN3 tonight (also the Longhorn Network for anyone lucky/unlucky enough to get that network).

Here's ESPN's schedule today for games on ESPNU and ESPN2. All other games are on ESPNU.

12 pm - Alabama-Florida State elimination game (ESPNU)
4 pm - Louisville-Kansas (ESPN2)
4 pm - Texas A&M-George Mason elimination game (ESPNU - joined in progress? tv listings say Around The Bases from 3-4 pm???)
7 pm - Arkansas-Virginia (ESPN2)
7 pm - Oregon-Vanderbilt (ESPNU)

Are any of our games on TV?

A shame that Eric Soreson's opinion didn't prevail with his ESPN colleagues:

Quote:MOST INTERESTING DAY TWO MATCHUP:

- Texas vs. Rice.

Although there are a number of great day two showdowns, this will be the most anticipated. Including today’s win over Texas A&M, the Longhorns are now 36-3 against in-state foes in the history of the NCAA Tournament. That whole Houston Regional is one big rivalry hoedown. Today it was the Longhorns and Aggies bloodfest, tomorrow it’ll be the Burnt Orange and the Owls. That’s good stuff man.

FYI, from the same article, here's the context, for those who might not follow Eric:

Quote:Yes StitchHeads, as I tweeted out earlier, ESPN has given me the added responsibility of running the ESPNU Twitter Feed for the entire post-season once again this year. So while you guys are out at out there seeing great games in person and tailgaiting and having fun, I’m stuck on my couch, sitting in my underwear and sipping depressing amounts of whiskey while I comment and crack wise on games I see on ESPNU and ESPN3.

Only blacked out if your cable co gets LHN.

Since Rice is the home team, why would we agree to this? F2f or that matter why would the NCAA make a special case for LHN?

If LHN is paying for it, why wouldn't Rice agree to it?

Last I checked (despite media reports to the contrary) it was not the Austin regional. Now ESPN might pay LHN's way. ..

They should put Aggies-Mason on LHN for maximum amusement.

Just in time for tonight's game, my son discovered that Dish now has LHN. Apparently signed a contract this week. Channel 407.

Television rights are bid. In this case the high bidder happens to be LHN.

How do you think it worked?

I suspect that the NCAA controls the media rights, not Rice.

Beating UT on the LHN will just be the icing on the cake! Go Owls!

RE: ESPN3 tonight - ExcitedOwl18 - 05-31-2014 03:05 PM

Not sure what the animosity towards LHN is (at least in this situation).

This. And I'm not entirely clear on why we are complaining? It's on TV and it's going to be ESPN announcers, not LHN.

RE: ESPN3 tonight - owl40 - 05-31-2014 03:33 PM

ESPN controls the rights. They can do what they want. They have paid big $$ for them. If they felt it was worth it, it could be on ESPN main stage or ESPNU or nothing. However, given the mess they are trying to fix w/ LHN and justify the incremental $ they recently secured w/ new distribution (e.g, TW Cable), makes total sense to pick LHN.

LHN desperately needs programming to get eyeballs to tune-in and if goal is to get more total eyeballs nationally to tune-in to all Worldwide Leader networks, they are doing the right thing by having other games on ESPNU, ESPN2, etc. They get more total eyeballs w/ this approach and thus better ROI on their NCAA rights investment.

For the Worldwide Leader, macro speaking LHN = bad biz decision but this micro issue today= good business decision.

LHN has been showing this fascinating series (not) called Home Plate with Augie Garrido while killing time before the game. I think coming up is a replay of a football game for 20 years ago. A truly great network!

You mean, you actually have LHN?
