Anyone ever been to Italy...? - HornLakeTiger - 05-25-2014 07:50 PM

Toying with the idea of saving up for a week in Venice for myself and the wife. Anyone ever been...? What would be the best time of year, weather wise...?

Venice is a lot of fun. Spring is the best time, and avoid winter. It is cold in the winter, and hot in the summer. Couple that weather with below sea level, and you get what you get.

Spring will bring rains, so get ready to wade through knee deep water.

Plan a day trip to Florence, and stay a night there if you can to maximize the time. Also, get a personally guided tour of Venice, it is worth every penny. PM me if you need more information or details.

I've been three times, parts of Italy are awesome, parts are pretty trashy. One thing though, there are NO public bathrooms. In all of Italy I have found less than, one in Cortona that was a hole in the ground inside a room, a modern one right beside the Duomo in Assisi, and one inside the Vatican. In Rome, there is a huge McDonald's near the Spanish Steps that has an enormous restroom, and laugh if you will at the McDonald's being there, trust me, you will be grateful to know this.

Neillis would also be a good authority on traveling in Italy, I would think.

I would also try to see Florence and other parts of Italy, too, if you can. I loved Naples and the coast. Rome is very worthwhile, too. Get a couple really good guidebooks and study up on what you will see, both history-wise and art-wise.

I made a huge pot of spaghetti just last week.

I liked Sweden more, plus it's never hot.

If you're looking for a romantic getaway, you may find you enjoy the relative quiet of Cinque Terra as opposed to tourist overrun Venice. Just a thought.

My Mom's parents were immigrants from Italy. Her older brother was the first to be born in America. When I was about 10 we flew over to "meet the family" and made our way to a small village outside Florence. We didn't leave that little town for a week.

My wife and I are surrounded by neighbors who have been recently and our oldest son and his wife went to Paris, Rome and Venice right after Christmas this past year.

It is definitely on our bucket list. I'd like to see Lake Como among all the other major tourist sites. I have a list of great restaurants from friends who have been there often.

If you're thinking of getting a place in Tuscany don't bother, there's really nothing available.

Lake Como is one of the most gorgeous and romantic places I have ever been. It's also on my bucket list.

I'm wondering why anyone wants to visit some dirty pond in Panola county, MS. Glad I looked Lake Como up on Wikipedia!

I'm disappointed no one got my earlier Seinfeld reference.

HLT- Sorry, you must have been collateral damage from the Ignore Wars. Rectified now.
